IS THE BIBLE REALLY FROM GOD? HOW CAN WE BE CERTAIN?

We must first remember in discussing the claims of the Bible with anyone, that the Bible is not a single, autonomous work. Rather, it is a collection of 66 different books written over a vast time span in three languages on three continents with authors from every station in life. These ancient works cover every major topic dealing with the human condition including: love, hate, death, sin, marriage, civil laws, and relationships with each other as well as with God. Although these works were written independently, they show an amazing congruency and they never contradict each other!

When Paul writes "All scriptures is inspired by God (II Tim 3:16)", his primary reference is the Old Testament, which was completed 400 years previously. This is not to say that the verse doesn't apply to the New Testament as well, but Paul's subject matter was the Scriptures Timothy was taught as a child. Paul believes the Scriptures are "God-breathed"; that is they hold the same authority as if God were to come down and speak to you directly. Every word recorded in the original documents is considered to be chosen by God.

So, our first point is that the testimony of Paul establishes a point of view that holds the Scriptures very highly. We know that the early church believed the Scriptures were inspired, we must now find out how to demonstrate that fact. Before going too far, I would ask your friend what type of evidence is he willing to accept to demonstrate the Bible as the Word of God? We obviously cannot go into a laboratory and test for "God residue" on the text, so to ask for scientific proof is impossible. (Likewise, asking for scientific proof that one loves his spouse is absurd. True science is limited to making claims on that which it can disprove through experimentation. ...The Bible consists of the Old and New Testaments and is said to be written by people who had divine inspiration, thus it is referred to by Christians as the ‘book of God’. The Bible presents God in several various manners, however they all hold in common the value of God’s goodness. Four examples of this are that the Bible states God is morally perfect, the judge of mankind, the law-giver, and the sending of Jesus to humanity. Arguably one of the most fundamental creeds in Christian Biblical interpretation, is the concept of God’s moral perfection, regardless of whether the students of the Bible are literary or progressive theists. This is simply because the Bible states clearly that God is perfect: “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” Matthew 5:48. As a result every action that God has taken must be morally right or ‘perfect’ and thus even when He orders Abraham to sacrifice his son, a literal theist would argue that the sacrifice was for a good reason, and therefore actions which are not normally considered good are made good for the sake of God. The main sectors for Government spending in 2013 were social protection, education and the UK healthcare system. A god of the gaps is probably the most common, as well as most elementary, argument for debating science vs. religion. This idea is simply employing a divine meaning to things that science has no answer to. It is often a question of why, and assumes purpose to everything. One thing that science cannot refute is a purpose to our world. It is scientifically inert, that is to say that there is no plausible way to test its predictions. The scientific method is just field testing the observable world we see around us. We are all naturally inquisitive; we thrive to find our “purpose” in the world. But this, I believe, is simply a limit to our senses. When there are questions that science cannot answer, such as why we came to be, skeptics often say that it is outside the bounds of our universe. This, to me, is just a lazy answer. The god of the gaps is a “fill in the blank” answer to everything that has been so far, untestable. ...Religion is a subject that both fascinates and intrigues me. Supposedly we are here in this life for a very short time, relatively speaking, from which our eternal destiny is determined. If such is the case, this issue then is the only matter of any real importance and that importance is of such magnitude that all else pales in comparison. Yet we are left without definitive, unambiguous instructions from God as to how to live this life to assure just what that destiny is.
