Is Your Head in the Game?
The rate of concussions in contact sports is at an all time high and steadily growing at an alarming rate. With no definitive solution to this problem in sight, provisions must be put in place in order to protect our youth and professional athletes alike. Precautionary safety measures have been lackluster, and research on the issue, all but forgotten. With the advancements in technologies it is up to the authorities and more importantly the people to implement more effective means of safety, education, unyielding policies and severe punishments in order to protect the youth and professional athletes.
A concussion is defined as a traumatically induced physiological disruption of brain function with a short period of altered or loss of consciousness, when a concussion occurs the brain is shaken in such a forceful way inside the skull that it causes injury. Concussion rates have doubled in this decade and account for 1 out of 10 of all contact sport injuries (Barton, 2008), the Center for Disease Control (C.D.C) has concluded that concussions in the United States have reached an “epidemic level” and there are between 1.6 and 3.8 million sport related concussions every year (Halstead, 2010) (Lincoln, 2011). Symptoms include but are not limited to confusion, headache, amnesia, nausea, sensitivity to light, double vision, sleep disturbances, loss of consciousness and were reported to be linked to more serious conditions such as, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

Participation in high school athletics in the United States has regularly increased over the past 2 decades; there were approximately 7.5 million high school student-athletes in the 2008-2009 school year. As the number of…...

The Dirty Heads

...Shayna Robledo October 9, 2012 Music 290 The Dirty Heads A few weekends ago, on September 28, 2012, I attended The Dirty Heads (TDH) concert. The concert took place at Senator Theater. The doors opened at 7:30 PM and the concert started at 8:30 PM. The Dirty Heads has a full band. This means that they had a percussionist (Jon Olazabal), a drummer (Matt Ochoa), a bassist (David Foral), a vocalist/guitarist (Dustin “Duddy B”) and a singer/song writer (Jared “Dirty J” Watson). The style of music that they play is reggae with a mix of hip hop, ska punk, and So Cal style. They were the main event but Pyrex and Ease Up also performed during the concert. During the concert, TDH performed a number of amazing songs. My favorite four that they played are as follows; 1. Cabin by The Sea: This was my most favorite song that they played. It is a very mellow and relaxed song. The song is all about having the time of your life by the sea. It’s about relaxing and being yourself around your friends. It’s about expressing yourself and completely being at peace. It paints a picture of a fun night at the beach with your friends and completely being happy. I love that it kept repeating, “Our friends are all around and the storm was an ocean, they say we look better in a black and white photo”. To me, this truly expresses that you don’t have to worry about your troubles at the moment, just take a step back to admire life and have fun and remember it. This song is all......

Or maybe we are stranded in a cabin in the mountains in a snow blizzard or something of that nature. No we are playing this game because our nutty professor say’s we have too. Just joking Professor Crossley just trying to make light of the situation and add a bit of humor I’m sure you will agree so laugh and enjoy. Ok back to the guess your card game in which each player draws three cards without looking at the three cards they have chosen. Each card has a number between 1 and 9 on it. Then my opponents place their cards on their heads so that all of us but themselves can see the cards. Our objective is to guess what cards we have ourselves. The first person to do this wins the game I guess I don’t see any other great prize we will receive for performing this task enough with that on with the show. During the playing of the game, each player, in turn, draws a question at random from a stack of questions. Then each player answers the question bases on the cards that they see...

Head Injuries in the Game of Football

...Head Injuries in the Game of Football Head Injuries in the Game of Football 250,000 people age 19 and younger were treated in emergency rooms for concussions and other sports- or recreation-related brain injuries in the country in 2009. That was an increase from 150,000 in 2001 (Cleared to Play). Did you know that high school athletes sustain an estimated 136,000 to 300,000 concussions per year (Moms Team)? How about that 24.7 percent, out of all the patients who were admitted into an emergency department with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), obtained their head injury while playing football (Swarm Interactive)? That is higher than any other sport or activity associated with TBIs. Brain injuries contribute one third of all injury-related deaths in the United States and 75 percent of those injuries are concussions (CDC). It is easy to conclude that head injuries are extremely dangerous and can be easily obtained. For these reasons, people should be informed of how football can be immensely risky to play and how the sport is associated with brain injuries. Numerous retired professional football players now suffer from a degenerative disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). This disease is caused by countless hits to the head or body, causing small concussions (ESPN). CTE is a build up of a protein that garrotes brain cells that control one’s emotions, memory, perceptions, and more. As far as we have seen, the disease also causes serious depression, dementia,......

Head Injuries in the Nfl

...HEAD INJURIES IN THE NFL KENNETH BASSETT ENG 122 PROFESSOR WELLS 5/19/14 Playing football as a kid was always every little boys dream of one day becoming a professional player in the NFL. Suiting up in cleats, shoulder pads, and helmets was always a fun time. Back in high school when the coaches would make you have two a day practices to get ready for the fall. In the back of the players minds, and even their parents is the idea of a very bad injury or even a concussion. What is a concussion you might ask? Concussion is a temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. The term is also used loosely of the after effects such as confusion or temporary incapacity. Concussions can be very difficult to spot especially since plays don’t necessarily have to be knocked out in order to receive a concussion. This is why players who suffer from head injuries are often told to shake it off and get back in the game. Many concussions in high school go undiagnosed due to lack of staff, player, and family knowledge about concussions. Being able to recognize a concussion is the first step in protecting athletes. Ways to recognize a concussion that has either been knocked out or still conscious would be if a player feels dizzy, confused and forgetful, complains about headaches, and/or vomit or feels nauseous. Concussion symptoms can either occur right away or in some cases they can begin weeks later after receiving the hit that caused the......

If You Can Keep Your Head

...If If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master; If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in......

Hit the Books, Not Your Head

...Hit the Books, not Your Head Some days at work can be pretty hard. It seems like the ride home takes twice as long as it did to get there, and as I get out of the car I can feel all the vertebrae in my back trying to realign themselves into a proper order. My head, feeling like a balloon with a thin spot ready to explode, is throbbing with the tempo of a jazz band on a hot night. My eyes, bloodshot with the road maps of New York and Maine, are hard to focus. At this point, I am a living, breathing definition of stress. I really need something to get my mind off of the day I have endured, and the first thing that comes to mind is that I need a little break from reality. One of the easiest ways I have found to do this is with a good book. I have always felt that reading a good book is a great form of stress management. For instance, I will sit down, relax, and open up a good mystery. One of my favorites is a book with the collection of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is rather dog-eared with age and the pages are yellowed, but when I am reading these stories, it’s as if I have literally stepped back in time. I have spent many hours in an upper apartment at 221B Baker Street. With the air thick of the smell of gas lamps and tobacco, I have relaxed in a comfortable Queen Anne chair while listening to Dr. Watson. With pen and paper in hand, he is rambling on with his odd, and sometimes humorous, conclusions of the case at hand. On the far side of the...

Nfl Head Injuries

...The Big HIT in the NFL: Head injuries are changing the way the game is played I firmly believe that the future of the NFL and all of its players is in jeopardy of being lost as the American sport as we know it simply due to the fact that too many injuries are occurring in the NFL today than what was happening in the past. Sure past players got hurt, but players now hit ten times harder, play ten times tougher, it’s obvious they are due for a serious injury, it’s just a matter of time and when, surely they make millions each year, but is all that money worth the risk of losing your life or possibly harming it? Imagine this, you’re at your sons final football game as he’s a senior about to graduate, he’s got the crowd rooting for him, he’s the one who snaps the ball, yes the quarterback of the team. The defense is running full force, showing blitz when suddenly “ WHAM!” he takes a huge hit from a defensive player and stays laid out on the floor , suddenly coaches and staff from the team rush to the field while he remains still, the crowd silent , awaiting the outcome . Slowly he gets up with the help of the staff and coaches, he’s then carted to the locker room by team staff where they tell the parents that they are checking him for a concussion because it’s UIL protocol when it comes to hard extensive hits taken by a defenseless player. Not one person who loves football can deny that the big hits and huge plays are the main reason we watch the game, but has anyone ever......

Raising Your Game

...“Raising your game” means stretching yourself beyond where you are today. This will require you to take some risks, continuously setting your sight on higher goals and being willing to accept failure. People who are afraid of trying out different things or stretching beyond their comfort zone lose the opportunities for growth. Below are five (5) steps I can take as a project manager (PM) to improve the behavior of my team members from lower-level to higher-level behavior. 1.Clear purpose: Establishing a clear understanding of the purpose for a project is the responsibility of the PM. The project team must share a common goal and a view; thus eliminating internal conflict and hurries decision-making and project completion. 2.Open communications: The communications within the project team is vital. It is important for the project manager to receive weekly status reports, for example. These pulse checks in the project ensure that as a project manager, I am on top of my game and there are no conflicts. Wong (2007) states that, “transparency and active listening are keys in developing positive team communications” (p. 284). 3.Participation: Project success requires a great level of involvement by each team member. As the project manager, I will facilitate brainstorming sessions to “bridge” thoughts of team members before making my own comments. Bridging is a highly effective conversational technique to gain respect and help participants rise to a higher-......

Traumaone: as Life Flashes Through Your Head William Wells Professor Nora Kabaji English 100 Diagnostic Essay 30 August 2011 Topic of this essay: Explain a situation in your life which made you change your attitude towards a person or an issue. Focus on the change of your attitude and opinion: How and why it occurred. TraumaOne: As Life Flashes Through Your Head Has there ever been a time when today was the last time a love one or friend would be alive? Not to bring back any bad memories of the past, but the thought of what actions have to be completed to ensure that this particular time by this road on a summer day is not going to be that day. Just a typical afternoon working at the new salon and the owner comes and says “Can you two guys go put up this sign up by the road?” Let us take an imaginary trip through your head of the first three hours after the accident takes place from putting up the sign, to the accident when the life of a friend flashes through your head and finally finding out that the friend is going to recover completely after some time in the hospital. The afternoon was just as any ordinary afternoon of work that gets a new hair salon business up and running. It began with getting supplies together to go clean the marquee before putting the new sign up so that everyone would know that the hair salon that used to be beside Wal-Mart in our town had not gone out of business, just a change of location. Once the supplies were gathered, we headed to the......

A Map in Your Head

...Martins Onskulis PRPE_108 Sec. 08N January 31, 2016 A Map in Your Head There is nothing more worrying in the moment than when you have to say goodbye to your family, a moment when sitting in the airplane and the pilot is starting the engines. Like a heavy bird the plane slowly glides to the runway and turns. Not to miss a single second to feel vibration of airframe, wings and tension beneath them. Land begins to run turning into regular tracery, knitting together like grandmother’s knitted gloves and socks. The only question is how free you can let your daily routine behind you and be open to unknown. Nothing is more breathtaking than the moment when you get out of the train in a strange city, with a map in your hands and overhead the sun as a compass needle. Welcoming of tourist groups and organizations holds back the true first impression of the city. How many places will not been discovered - the festival or hidden waterfalls, by traveling together with the tourist groups from point A to point B, and left without the landscape behind the car window. The best way to travel is alone. Standing alone on the dusty platform, I fill my lungs with the smell of a strange city perfumes. My map is adjusted to the north. Once the first steps are taken in a strange land, it becomes yours. I will never forget the days-long train trip to Omsk (Russia), when I woke up in the morning in my tiny cabin and I know – few more days to travel, I am not leaving train today, have to keep......

Inside Your Head

...Calder Mahan March 24 2016 PSY 2012-80911 Professor Drew. Inside Your Head Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) was first acknowledged in the 1700's but it was not understood at the time, so it was therefore dismissed as simply a smaller symptom of a larger issue. Many cases show up in medical records throughout the years, but in 1905, Dr. Morton Prince wrote a book about MPD that is now a well-known foundation for the disease. A few years after it was published Sigmund Freud dismissed the affliction and this dropped it from being discussed at any credible mental health establishments. Since then the disorder was overlooked and misdiagnosed as either schizophrenia or psychosis. Many in the medical profession did not believe that a person could unknowingly have more than one personality or person inside one body. In 1993, records showed that three to five thousand patients were being treated for MPD, compared to the hundreds of cases reported ten years earlier. There is still an increase in the number of cases being reported as the scientific community learns more about the disease and the public is becoming more aware of this mental disorder. However there are still many questions left unanswered about this disease, like "Is it genetic?" or "Is a certain type of personality more vulnerable to the disorder?" but many aspects of how people come by the disorder are already answered. MPD is commonly found in adults who were frequently...
