Leaders of the pack

INNOVATION in the design and functionality of fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs) consolidation of brands for local and global markets, and a steady rise in the profile of packaging/design as a marketing tool are the key trends shaping the packaging industry in Australia.

Many of the individual product innovations are focused on convenience--for example, smaller packs and resealable products. In short, anything which assists the consumption and repurchase by busy, time-poor consumers.

However, some design specialists warn that while innovation is a buzzword for both packagers and marketers, and that most marketers give lip service to packaging as a vital marketing tool, it is only those who pay attention to the crucial relationship between branding and design who can truly be called innovative.

Brand vs bland

Managing director of Melbourne's Blue Marlin Design, Simon Jones, says while marketers or design specialists talk constantly of innovation, the industry continues to follow fundamental trends.

"The focus for a long time has been convenience--shorthand for a raft of values," he says. "People, in the words of the Coke marketing ethos, want products 'in arms' reach of desire'--easily available, easy to use, easy to prepare, easy to consume. That is our focus, among other elements, which are all centred on brand."

Packaging design should be driven by brand, Jones says, and brand is one thing that has not changed. The trend is to create packaging that is relevant to individual brands. Beyond that, design should not be subject to short-term fashion--it should be a holistic element of brand.

"There is also recognition now that there is no monopoly on branding ability within one discipline and that marketers can get that skill from agencies, design companies or their own ranks," Jones says.

Jan Vermeer

...Born: October 30, 1632 Delft, Netherlands Died: December 15, 1675 Delft, Netherlands Jan Vermeer, the greatest of all Dutch genre painters, lived and worked in his native town of Delft. The most likely candidate to have been his master is the history painter Leonaert Bramer, who testified to Vermeer’s character at the time of his betrothal, but the artist’s early work shows no trace of Bramer’s influence. Vermeer’s earliest dated painting, The Procuress of 1656 (now in Dresden), shows that he was familiar with the work of Utrecht followers of Caravaggio. This painting, also in Dresden, was painted shortly after The Procuress and its style is closely related to it, with its broad handling of paint, deep shadows and rich, saturated colors. The subject – a glimpse into the corner of a room where a young woman is totally absorbed in reading a letter – is quite unlike those painted by the Caravaggisti. Vermeer emphasizes the sense of our entering a private world by placing an illusionistic curtain on a rail in front of the scene. It was quite usual in Holland in the seventeenth century to protect paintings from sunlight and dust with such curtains. X-rays have revealed that the curtain was not part of Vermeer’s original design. They also reveal that Vermeer made a number of other changes. He originally included a large painting of a standing Cupid hanging on the back wall, which would have suggested that it is a love letter that the girl reads. In the event he suppressed......

Zajam Podijeljen Na Obveznice

Jan Carlzon

...Harvard Business School 8-489-046 Rev. May 31, 2001 Jan Carlzon In June 1974, at the age of 32, I sat down behind the desk in the president’s office of Vingresor, a subsidiary of the Scandinavian Airlines System that assembles and sells vacation package tours. I’d been selected president after only six years of working life. I had authority over 1,400 employees, many of them roughly the same age as I. My qualifications were no better than anyone else’s, and there was no obvious reason for making me president. I was afraid—afraid that I wouldn’t be accepted and afraid that I would fail. I had taken over at Vingresor during troubled times. The 1973-1974 oil crisis had escalated air travel prices so much that passengers shied away from charter trips. It was our job to make Vingresor profitable again. We didn’t have many options. The main functions of a tour operator like Vingresor are to contract for flights and hotels and set up a service section at the travel resort that organizes excursions and activities. Then all these pieces are packaged together for the customer to purchase. The operator’s profit is to a great extent a question of cost: the more money invested throughout the various stages of assembling the package, the smaller the profit margin and the greater the chances of losing money. The less invested, the less the risk. In a sagging market, most product-oriented executives would have cut back on service. But this would only bring in less revenue, creating......

Nasty Nas

...Nafees Bost Professor Jordan-smith English 112 15 April 2013 Nasty Nas Quite possibly the only man to indirectly steal my attention with sheer words alone, such a man would have to be non-other than Nas, or Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones. Born the son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas dropped out of school in the eighth grade, trading classrooms for the streets of the rough Queensbridge projects, long fabled as the former stomping ground of Marley Marl and his Juice Crew as immortalized in "The Bridge." Despite having dropped out of school in the eighth grade, Nas developed a high degree of literacy that would later characterize his rhymes. At the same time, though, he delved into street culture and flirted with danger, such experiences similarly characterizing his rhymes. His synthesis of well-crafted rhetoric and street-glamorous imagery blossomed in 1991 when he connected with Main Source and laid down a fiery verse on "Live at the Barbeque" in which earned him instant respect among the East Coast rap scene. Not long afterward, MC Serch of 3rd Bass approached Nas about contributing a track to the Zebrahead soundtrack. Serch had been the soundtrack's executive producer and, like much of New York, had been impressed by "Live at the Barbeque." Nas then submitted "Halftime," and the song had impressed Serch enough for him to make it the soundtrack's leadoff track. Columbia Records meanwhile signed Nas to a major-label contract, and many of New York's finest producers......

Nas Devices

...Kevin Wingate November 10, 2014 NT1110 – Computer Structure and Logic Research Project – Network Attached Storage A Network Attached Storage (NAS) device is a device connected to a network of two or more computer with the purposes of providing “community storage” of files and other data. As our society moves closer towards greater mobility the need to have mobile storage has increased. There are many types of storage devices, with various advantages and disadvantages to each of them; including Direct Attached Storage (DAS) and Network Attached Storage Devices. NAS devices are useful if all the computers on the network need access to the same files, DAS can only be accessed by the computer they are attached to (unless the computer grants access to another user. Most NAS devices contain multiple hard drives, which are connected by an internal server. There are many features of NAS devices. The speed of the network is dependent on the service available to the network and the number of users on the network. The capacity range of the network is depend on the hard drives contained in the device and the way it is setup. As with most servers or combination of two or more hard drives (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) RAID can be set up to maximize the use of the server and to protect the data. Also most NAS devices have software, which can be installed on client computers which allows the user to manage the device. The device has an IP address which also allows you...

Nas Network-Attached Storage

...disk-based network attached storage device and a linear tape open (LTO) linear tape file system tape. One example method may include controlling a device (e.g., backup server) to read a file from the NAS device using a shared file system (e.g., NFS, CIFS) and controlling the device to write the file to the LTO tape device using the LTFS. Since the NAS device and the LTO device may have different information or metadata requirements, and since the shared file system and the LTFS may have different information or metadata requirements, the method may include controlling the device to remove from the file information specific to the NAS and the shared file system. Additionally, the method may include controlling the device to add to the file information specific to the LTFS or the LTO device. Inventors: Wideman, Roderick B. (Shakopee, MN, US) Claim: 1. A computerized method, comprising: accessing a shared file system on a network attached storage (NAS) disk-based device; accessing a tape file system on a linear tape open (LTO) tape-based device; and exchanging a file between the shared file system and the linear tape file system using a file system based approach throughout the exchange, where exchanging the file includes reading the file from a mounted shared file system volume on the NAS device using the shared file system, and providing the file to a linear tape file system (LTFS) volume on the LTO tape-based device after adding LTFS specific metadata to the file and......

Jan and Ken Video

...could open this conversation more productively, beyond clearly expressing his emotions and using “I” language. One way Ken could open this conversation more productively is decided how to express his emotions. Since he was upset when he first opened his conversation with Jan, he could have waited until he was calmed down. That way he could better describe his feelings more clearly and his perception wouldn’t be as distorted (Wood, 2013, 2010, 2007, p. 183). He can also think about how he will feel in the future if he opens up the conversation destructively instead of construct fully. He can ask himself, if I open this conversation up angry and words are said that are not meant, will I be angry or hurt in a six months if Jan and I are not best friends anymore? Thinking about how he will feel in the future and the possible outcomes would change the way he opened the conversation. 2. How do you perceive Jan’s effort to convince Ken to forgive her? Based on what you have learned in this chapter, suggest two ways she might more effectively seek Ken’s forgiveness. 3. What are two nonverbal cues used by Jan? What are two nonverbal cues used by Ken? In what ways did the nonverbal cues used by both Ken and Jan impact the message? What are the verbal messages used by each? Jan Van Eyck

...In 1495 Jan Van Eyck became the first Flanders painter to receive international fame. He was the court painter of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Jan Van Eyck completed “The Ghent”, one of the largest retable’s of the 15th century. His brother Hubert Van Eyck originally began work on it. Phillip the Good and his wife, Isabel Borlout commissioned this retable as a centerfold that diplomat retainer Jodocous Vyd built. It was dedicated to John the Baptist. Judicious Vyd political and social connections to the Ghent aided in him being appointed chief magistrate of Ghent. The altarpiece in its entirety expresses the Christian principal of salvation. In the oil painting of “Arnolfini and His Bride” Jan Van Eyck depicts a secular painting with religious undertones. The purpose of this painting was to record an sanctify Arnolfini‘s marriage. This retable included gold manuscript. Some scholars believe he was bestowing on his wife permission to conduct business matters in his absence .Rogier Van er Weyden became renowned for his biblical inspired paintings that stressed human action and drama. When Weyden was commissioned by the archer’s guild of Louvain for the church of Notre Dame he created “The Deposition” a center panel of a triptych. The painting resembles a relief carving and depicts Jesus after the crucifixion surrounded by key biblical figures. This oil on wood painting evokes strong emotion in the viewer and regarded as one of the most authentic religious paintings of the...
