Comparisons Of Leadership Styles

Timothy Burkeen

ADM515 Week 4 Written Assignment

Abstract: Among the many leadership theories that have been proposed, relationship oriented styles and those that resonant with people and inspire them are the most effective in gaining widespread acceptance and support. This paper discusses the participative leadership approach and the transformational approach along with a comparison and contrast of Machiavellia's approach.

Introduction

There are many definitions of styles of Leadership. In his book Primal Leadership, Goleman offers that there are six styles of leaders; Visionary, Coaching, Affliliative, Democratic, Pacesetting, and Commanding. (Goleman, 2002) He further categorizes these styles as either resonant or dissonant. Goleman uses anecdotal stories and case studies to emphasize how effective leaders use emotional intelligence and building relationships to influence people and events to bring about change. In one sense, one could say that Goleman's approach is interested in the study of how the leaders style influences the moods and emotions of those he is attempting to influence. There is also an Open Loop (Goleman, 2002, pp6) in which the moods and emotions of the leader and the moods and emotions of the subordinates affect each other. They each influence each other.

Yukl approaches the study of leadership in his book Leadership In Organzations by exploring the traits and behaviors that effective leaders tend to exhibit and the differing roles and responsibilities leaders assume from time to time as situations and conditions warrant. Yukl explores Participative, Transformational, and Supportive leadership styles. (Yukl, 2013) Yukl explores how a combination of traits and behaviors associated with these styles are…...

... Comparison on Public Health and Community Health. Shelly Shew NUR/408 October 29, 2012 Kim Oatman Comparison on Public Health and Community Health Nursing. This paper will reflect the history of public health and significant events related to these agencies. The difference between public and community health will be acknowledged. Also information included on county, state, and national public health resources. There has been measurable growth and expansion over the years in regard to public health and its creation. Identification of Public health goes as far back as the 14th century. Towns and cities created a system known as quarantine to deter the bubonic plague (Black Death). Travelers and merchandise from places known to carry infections put in isolation. This procedure was in use until the 19th century to protect the public from the smallpox, syphilis, and cholera epidemics. Public health established services in 1798 as the Marine Hospital Service. This came about by early efforts of the federal government to provide health care to merchant seamen, protecting seaport cities from epidemics. In 1813 charitable services started by the Ladies Benevolent Society of Charleston, South Carolina, health care to the sick and poor. Another step toward the improvement of public health was the creation of the American Medical Association in 1847. Shortly after their existence this group formed a hygiene committee to conduct sanitary surveys and to develop a system to......

Comparison of Leadership Types

...The Comparison of Transformational, Servant, and Charismatic leadership by Matthew Snyder The concepts of transformational, servant and charismatic leadership all focus around their effects on those who follow them. Even though each style is different they all do contain components of the other, and they all can be very effective under the right situation and administered by the right person. At the same time each style may show similarities to one another, they are also three very different types of leadership. The first is based on transforming the followers and creating a more independent environment, the second is a lead by example style where the leader motivates the followers by being one of with the followers, and the charismatic leader focuses on inspiring the followers to be more than they are. As you read through this paper you will see how I show each style as a proven method of leading, while staying objective to show how not one is actually the "Perfect" method, because every situation requires a leader to adjust their leadership style, and what works for one person or situation necessarily won't work for another . Also, you will see that each of these methods rely on a lot of the same core values and morals within the leader themselves. Also you will be presented with thought provoking information that shows in some instances these methods are actually ineffective and could cause a situation to actually get worse, because there are certain......

Leadership Comparison

...COMPARE AND CONTRAST FOUR LEADERSHIP MODELS UNIVERISTY OF PHOENIX There are four leadership models that I will talk about. These leadership models are Charismatic, Transformational, Servant, and Transactional. These styles of leadership hold significant differences. However, The Charismatic Leadership style refers to a special quality that enables the leader to mobilize and sustain activity within an organization through specific personal actions combined with perceived personal characteristics (Wren, 1995, p. 108). The charismatic leader has three components which include envisioning, energizing, and enabling. Charismatic leaders display behaviors that will inspire others. And their ethical values are very high. It seems likely that under normal ethical charismatic circumstances, a leader’s mirror-needs play a central role in his or her desire to become the focus of social attention (Avolio & Yammarino, 2002, p. 248). The Transformational Leadership style is quite rewarding. The transforming leader shapes, alters, and elevates the motives and values and goals of followers (Wren, 1995, p. 103). Transformational leadership focuses on culture and learning experiences in the workplace. Although not the most agreeable man in history, Adolf Hitler has inherently follows the charismatic leadership model. He had many followers that followed his leadership as a dictator, and he took advantage of his “followers independent of their inherent intentions, thereby opening the......

A Comparison

...A Comparison of Values In today’s society, having a moral obligation to others is essential when interacting with individuals or growing a successful organization as Kudler Fine Foods. Valuing and respecting individuals creates an environment in which everyone can live and work together in a more harmonious environment. Upon completing the Williams Institute Ethics Awareness Inventory self assessment, reflecting on the results and my own personal values, I believe that Kudler Fine Foods and I possess similar values and moral obligations. As a manager of Kudler Fine Foods my ability to perform my duties that coincide with my values would allow me to further the growth of the organization and create an environment that is both positive to all stakeholders at Kudler Fine Foods. According to the Williams Institute Ethics Awareness Inventory self assessment my ethical profile was said to be most closely aligned with Obligation. I have always believed that it is my obligation to do what is morally right. The assessment summarized me as believing everyone has a right to individual respect, which in most cases is true and I do believe that most people have a right to individual respect. However, when individuals fail to respect others, the right to individual respect is no longer a right. I do have a strong belief that in order to become a person of good moral character I have to do what is right for not only me but others around me. The self assessment was insightful, and I do...

...Analogy The clear message from the writer here is that caress Cashmere Luxury Body Wash will stimulate your senses. The feel and smell will be luxurious and extraordinary. The analogy is Cashmere Luxury Body Wash compared to being wrapped in a silky soft pashmina surrounded by the blend of white orchid milk and warm vanilla essence. Incidentally, ‘pashmina’ is said to be the finest cashmere wool. It would be difficult to say that this is a strong comparison. Cashmere wool, vanilla and orchid milk are a tough sell when compared to body wash. On the other hand, the comparison does provoke a strong desire to actually be wrapped in pashmina while inhaling the warm essence of vanilla and orchid milk, white orchid milk nonetheless. The smooth supple feel of the body wash could be compared to the feel of cashmere. Textures are easily compared so I could imagine the feeling on the skin may be similar. Fragrances too can be duplicated and used in perfumes, shampoos, and body washes. A direct and believable association can be made there. Vanilla is a somewhat familiar fragrance as it is used in cooking as well. Orchid milk however, is another story. I suppose orchids are popular and may be a recognizable smell. Orchid milk though perhaps not so recognizable. I think perhaps the figure of speech could relate more specifically to cashmere as opposed to pashmina. Cashmere is more recognizable when referring to fine wool. Perhaps the reference to orchid milk is to compare the......

Similarities in Leadership Roles in the Countries of Mexico and the United States Similarities can be seen in the manner Mexico and the United States governments plan to provide funding for a universal health care plan. Both countries plan to fund universal health care through taxation. The countries leaders have a goal to provide health care for all citizens, regardless level of income or ability to pay. Mexico is unsure how to reach those in remote areas, just as the United States has concerns regarding those who live on the street or in extreme remote locations and finally, both countries are unsure how they are going to provide enough health care providers. The leadership theories discussed in the paper include the trait-based, situational, and transformational leadership theories. Trait-based theories represented the earliest attempts to quantitatively study leaders and leadership effectiveness by focusing on the innate skills and traits of the person. Situational theories expanded to explore the influence of different situations on leadership. Lastly, transformational leadership theories further expanded on the role of the leader in motivating followers through inspiration. Leadership Comparison Paper

...Comparison Matrix Paper Brooke Waters Grand Canyon University: LDR-802 October 22, 2014 Comparison Matrix Essay This paper compares two studies dealing with leadership strategies in work-related settings. Although the settings vary, the study of management approaches and job satisfaction are similar in each. Charles Emery and Katherine Barker’s article, “The Effect of Transactional and Transformational Leadership Styles on Organizational Commitment and Job Satisfaction of Customer Contact Personnel”, assess the effect of transactional and transformational leadership styles on job satisfaction and the accountability of customer service personnel. The research suggests that some styles of management, such as transformational leadership, may be more effective in the dedication of customer service employees. Daniel Koys’ article, “The Effects of Employee Satisfaction, Organizational Citizenship Behavior, and Turnover on Organizational Effectiveness: A Unit-Level, Longitudinal Study”, addresses the issue of whether business outcomes are influenced by employee attitudes and behaviors or vice versa. In addition, the researchers concentrate on organizational citizenship as well as employee turnover. Each research study in this paper will be addressed as Article 1 and Article 2 respectively throughout this paper. Comparison of Research Questions Both of these topics examine employee outlook and job gratification in the workplace as well as the impact employees have on......

...Comparison among the monopoly and oligopoly Competition in the market. A monopoly market contains a single firm that produces goods with no close substitute, with significant barriers to entry of other firms. An A monopoly and an oligopoly are economic market structures where there is imperfect oligopoly market has a small number of relatively large firms that produce similar but slightly different products. Again, there are significant barriers to entry for other enterprises. In a monopoly, the seller charges high prices for the goods because there is no competition. In an oligopoly, the prices are moderate due to the presence of competition. However, they are higher than they would be in perfect competition. Barriers to entry in a monopoly market are high due to technology, high capital requirement, government regulation, patents and high distribution overheads. In an oligopoly market, the barriers to entry are high due to the economies of scale. A monopoly draws power from the fact that it is the only viable seller of the product in the industry. However, in an oligopoly, firms can influence the market by setting their prices, marketing strategies and customer service. In oligopoly, firms may collude rather than compete. The cooperation makes them operate as though they were one firm. This changes the market structure from being an oligopoly to a monopoly. There must be some measure of competition in an oligopoly market structure. The geographical size of the......

...Comparison Matrix Paper Nyenye Matthews Grand Canyon University: RES-811 June 8, 2016 Comparison Matrix Paper At first thought, the journey of completing a doctoral program can be scary, nerve wrecking and/or cause you to have anxiety especially when faced with having to decide on a topic for your dissertation before you even start class. All of these feelings eventually subside once the newly doctoral learner starts their first course. The purpose of this paper is to compare three empirical articles on the topic of doctoral identity. Weidman & Stein (2003) wanted “to examine the relationship among an academic department’s informal structures and the socialization of doctoral students to the scholar role as reflected in their level of participation in scholarly activities”. Baker & Lattuca (2010), sought “to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the study of doctoral education as a path to the professoriate”. Visser, Visser & Schlosser (2003), investigated “critical thinking as a disciplined manner of thought which a person uses to assess the validity of something”. These articles address three different ways of how a doctoral learner can find their doctoral identity. Comparison of Research Questions Even though each study asked different research questions, it seems as though each group of authors developed research questions based on the same idea in mind; to determine if “Socialization of doctoral students to academic norms, developmental......
