Management Assignment

...BPMN 1013 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT Group Assignment CASE STUDY 2 Transparency Works Successfully marketing something—an automobile, a dating service or a politician—requires skill, creativity and an understanding of the target market. For short-term products this usually is enough. In 1975 a California advertising executive came up with the idea of a “pet rock.” It was an ordinary rock, resting on fake grass in a small cardboard box, with instructions titled The Care and Training of your Pet Rock. The unit sold for about four dollars, and it was wildly popular—for less than one year. But this product is an example of a “one hit wonder”—so its creators did not need to worry about whether they seemed to be reliable or trustworthy or explicit about their company’s practices. But very few companies have the luxury of casting aside concerns about image. For big, medium and small companies today, the emphasis usually is on long-term survival, and this requires a good public image. So how can a company survive in today’s fast-changing world? Through transparency—in the presentation and defense of its products, and in its day-to-day behavior. This mean sharing, to whatever extent possible, facts about the company—how it is set up, how it operates, what its salaries and bonuses are based on, and how its workers are expected to treat customers and each other. There are many examples of companies doing precisely this, and succeeding. One of the most recent examples is......

Whatever they say, the most important notion needs to be ‘I enjoy working with people,’ not just using the phrase ‘I like people’… I really want to find out what motivates them. If the person smiles naturally, that’s very important to us, because this is something you can’t force.’ In a culture featuring more reserved expressions, service personnel who smile naturally will indeed become valuable and rare resources appreciated by hotel guests. The Portman Ritz-Carlton’s employee satisfaction rate is 98%, and its guest satisfaction is between 92% and 95%. To translate excellent HR management to better firm performance, the hotel’s performance goals are aligned with Ritz-Carlton’s corporate goal — from the company to the hotel, and from the hotel to each division. This means that everyone is part of the whole. Every employee comes up with a plan to reach the goal for the next year, measured by guest satisfaction, financial performance, and employee satisfaction. The bonus at the end of the year is based on improvements. In China, many multinationals face a constant shortage of talent and high employee turnover. Yet, the Portman Ritz-Carlton has not only been able to attract, but also to retain high-quality talent to deliver excellent customer service and ensure profitable growth. ...UNIT 101 – FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT LECTURER NAME TOPIC NAME Financial Analysis SUBMISSION DATE: STUDENT NAME: STUDENT ID: I EXECUTIVE SUMMARY With steady sales in 2012, Orica's performance for the 2012 financial year looked promising. Analysing the Orica Financial Report 2012 shows that although sales were high, the expenses increased for the year, and their net profit dropped considerably. This report analyses Orica's overall performance for 2012. Utilising the data provided by their Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement, the financial analysis ratios: Liquidity, Efficiency, Profitability, Financing and Investment ratios, are all calculated and analysed to present their financial standing at the end of the year. Comparing the relationships of these ratios reveals that Orica decreased their liquidity, but suffered lower profitability with heavy influences from Minova’s impairment of goodwill. With high asset utilisation and stable efficiency, Orica should focus on improving their maintenance and reliability by addressing the Kooragang plant shutdown. Furthermore, Orica is financing more with debt than equity which introduces some risk to the company given their higher expenses for 2012. Finally, the investment ratios indicate that Orica could be poised for high growth with a stable return, but should first focus on maximising their plants and equipment.
