Leadership and Me: Applying Organizational Behavior Principles to Develop an Action Plan
I believe that Leadership is a learned art, behavior, attitude and a set of skills that you develop and hone over the period of time that makes up your life. It is not simply a matter of experiences, though they play a roll. For example, the recent TV series “Undercover Boss” has fascinated me because the leaders of these companies are apparently not well-known in their own companies that they can be recognized by their employees while undercover. How is it possible that these followers do not know their leaders? These leaders should be acting like leaders, expressing leadership qualities and using leadership skills that would be obvious to anyone under them. But belaying all that, a good leader should be seen, heard, understood and known by ALL of their followers, otherwise who‘s leading whom? Someone might say is TV the place to get leadership advice? There is good advice and bad advice and you can learn from either, if you are paying attention. I also watch “The Apprentice” and “Survivor: ‘Whatever Island’” for the same purpose: to see how people lead and follow under varying conditions. Do not businesses do the same when they throw their people “into the fire”, “under the bus”, “to the dogs” and other such terms?
“Survivor: WI” shows everyday people, business leaders and characters using their talents [or not] in competition, under extreme duress, and under the worst of all possible circumstances, with very few resources, just their talents, attitude and communication to get things done, win rewards or immunity to stay in the game and win the Grand Prize. While on “The Apprentice [Regular or Celebrity]” participants are MBAs, [or not] and/or talented [or not] business people or celebrities having to perform, lead as “project manager”, work as a…...

...Top Reasons for Pursuing an MBA The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a graduate business programme that covers a wide spectrum of business related topics from economics, organisational behaviour, project management to government policy. While it would make sense for an individual already working in the financial industry to undertake the MBA for a deeper understanding on relevant issues that she may come across at work, that is not the main reason why most are motivated to pursue an MBA. 33 percent of those surveyed in a recent poll conducted by JobsCentral of 181 individuals cited “Salary increment upon completion” as their motivation for pursuing an MBA, making it the number one reason. “Acquisition of knowledge and skills” was the second most popular reason with 21 percent picking it as their main motivation. Xinhui who is currently working in private banking agrees with the majority. She explains why she is toying with the idea of pursuing an MBA, “Besides having a better knowledge of business management, having an MBA will put me in a better position to ask for better pay,” “I had both personal and professional reasons for doing my MBA,” Debbie, who has just completed her MBA with graduate business school INSEAD, says. “Personally, it was the challenge to find the drive and enthusiasm needed to enhance my learning and to get involved in networking with like-minded professionals from all around the world. Another motivation was the opportunity to broaden my...

Pursuing an Mba

...Management 521 February 20, 2010 Pursuing a Masters in Business Administration Pursuing a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree to achieve a personal goal may seem ludicrous to some, but not to the individual who desires to have a solid foundation of knowledge on which to build on. An undergraduate who decides to return to school as a graduate student is investing in his or her future. According to Levy (n.d.), an MBA can open doors for an individual and expose students to the business world in terms of job functions and industry. This paper will present an argument pertaining to pursuing an MBA. Additionally, the “What’s my Jungian 16-Type Personality” assessment will take a look at benefits in pursuing this degree. As a goal oriented individual, the decision to pursue an MBA degree was the right choice. Aside from personal ambition and goals, the decision will enhance my career opportunities, development, and will be a valuable asset. The MBA will also open doors to my personal, professional and financial fulfillment. I have been successful in my current position as a clinical research associate (CRA), and although I have had many experiences, the MBA program will enable me to expand my professional horizons and will facilitate me to acquire a solid business understanding. The Argument People have asked me why I am pursuing an MBA degree since my undergraduate degree is in health administration, and I currently have the opportunity to grow in the field......

Mba Pursuit

...Pursuit of an MBA Marvin Conway MGT/521 1 April 2010 Construct and Support an Argument Decision to Pursue an MBA To some, pursuing higher education is a waste of money and time. Others, such as me, may argue that it is an accomplishment and the benefits from acquiring a degree are worth the efforts and hard work. With the current national unemployment rate at 9.7% (US Department of Labor, Feb 2010) and steadily rising, it seems improbable that finding that “ideal” job is likely. During these tough economic times, I find myself with a bachelor’s degree at a low paying job with a child to take care of. It is because of this situation that I have chosen to pursue a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) degree with an emphasis in Accounting; receiving higher education could be the answer to my problem. According to the job outlook by education 2006-16 (Occupational Outlook Quarterly), increased earnings and lower rates of unemployment are trends associated with additional levels of education (Liming & Wolf, 2008). After taking the Jungian 16-Type Personality Self-Assessment test, scoring ISTJ, I found that my results support my decision to pursue my MBA with an emphasis in Accounting. A person scoring ISTJ are found to be organized, compulsive, private, trustworthy, and practical people. Their possible career choices are office manager, accountant, business manager, tax agent, and public servant (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007). I recognize that I......

Why an Mba

...The purpose of this paper is to construct and support and argument on why I decided to pursue my MBA and how the results of my Jungian Personality self-assessment fit into my MBA goal. My desire for education started at an early stage in life. My parents who migrated from Cuba in 1966, ended up with five children and no education. I experienced hard-ships that I always attributed to my parents lack of education, to no fault of their own. I was the only sibling of five to obtain anything higher than a high school education. I always prided myself in my scholastic accomplishments given my upbringing, and until this day believe that in today’s competing society an advanced degree is necessary to maximize income potential. Taking my education to the next level is a very important step in achieving my goals of an advanced degree and reaching a senior manager position within my agency. Because obtaining an MBA degree will give me a competitive advantage above my peers, I will be able to advance my career despite competition, economic uncertainty, and a shrinking workforce. I believe that to standout and better prepare myself for the challenges of becoming a senior manager, there are many aspects to managing and being a better leader that I need to learn or improve upon. There are various skills that managers must apply on any given work day, which I have yet to develop. According to (2007) “proper management is vital in these complex environments. The......

Pursuing a Mba

...M.B.A. can open up many windows of opportunities that may prove to be beneficial during school as well as upon completion of the program; if the individual have the drive and determination to complete the journey. Among the potential rewards that new MBA graduates can gain are improved personal skills, expanded career options and an increase in earning power. The actual benefits, of course, depend on a wide range of factors and will be different for each graduate (Davis & Taylor, 2004). The purpose of this paper is to construct and support an argument on my decision to pursue an MBA degree. I will further explain the Jungian Personality self-assessment on how others perceive me. Decision to Pursue an MBA I decided to pursue my M.B.A. because I realized that I needed more than my bachelor’s degree to afford me the opportunity to start a new career. For example, after viewing the employment postings at my job and other companies, I realized that it would be to my advantage to further my education in order to obtain a position in certain fields. I also wanted to gain additional knowledge in business field in order to support my husband’s vision of opening a restaurant. Having an M.B.A. degree can also add to my current leadership skills. The highly developed training in writing paper, presenting presentations and group projects will allow me to use the skills learned to deal with business situations in my current job and future career....

Mba in Marketing

...Entering the workforce or continuing on the education path are the main choices available. Those who finished college a long time ago may also be looking for a change or a chance to learn something new. Though there are many personal reasons a person might pursue a graduate degree, there are also several common reasons people seek out higher degree programs. After working over the years, I decided to pursue MBA because I realized that by completing my MBA, I will have a better career opportunity especially in this challenging and competitive job market. Many employers like to see or even require Masters / MBA on resume and even they set a bar in job advertisements. Going to graduate school not only will help me to find a better job but it will expand my understanding and learn new information that can increase my skills and knowledge. Besides securing a better job prospect, the other reason for me to do MBA is my personal gratification and determination. On the other hand, some people do not agree that MBA could be a paramount of a career prospect, as people feel that its time consuming and need 100% commitment to go back to study life after relatively many years in real world. Also, some feel its quite intimidating to back to school . In this day and age of rapid economic and technological developments, and regulatory changes, planning anything for more than 3 years is fraught with danger. It is very likely that your idea of 'tomorrow' will change before 'tomorrow'......

Mba Matrix

...MBA MATRIX In reviewing the MBA Matrix, I am not sure what is meant by program outcome. If this is meant as a choice of concentration within the MBA program then I would choose the Technology Management concentration. My field of choice is IT and I believe that possessing not only a MBA but also a specialization in Technology Management would greatly benefit my job opportunities. I also think that this type of specialization does not create a focus that is limiting in any future positions I may go for, unlike a Health Care Management specialization. Within the MBA Matrix itself I believe that the areas of: Management, Human Capital Development, and Strategic Planning and Implementation area will offer me the most value as they are areas that I think I need more experience and education to be the best I can. Throughout this week, the class reviewed several listings and types of managerial competencies or roles a manager needs to succeed. The Matrix itself lists those University of Phoenix believes are key to success. I believe that I am strong in several of these areas including Communication, Adapt to formal and informal structures, initiate and direct change, leverage technology, and problem solving. With more than 20 years of customer service experience, I have learned to communicate and adapt to any situation, and solve problems on the fly. I am always looking at how to make work processes more efficient as I hate to waste time, and if it is possible, I will look for a way...

...this problem may be due to inefficient plant operations. You have called in the heads of the three product lines to determine whether plant operations can be improved to help alleviate the cash flow problem. The following is a more complete description of the three product lines and the people responsible for running these operations. Betty started with the company 20 years ago assembling window frames and has been in charge of the window frame plant for a little over two years. Betty is in charge of 12 full time employees, and this is the first formal supervisory position she has ever held. Because she started at the plant immediately upon graduating from high school, Betty does not have a college education nor has she had any formal leadership training. However, as a worker Betty proved to be far superior to everyone else at the plant. She would often come to work early, leave late, and because of her expertise would be given many of the special window frame orders the plant received. When the plant supervisor job came open, you selected Betty to fill this position because of her expertise and outstanding work performance. Although Betty was an excellent worker on the shop floor, her performance as the plant supervisor has been barely adequate. A recent organizational climate survey showed a majority of the workers were dissatisfied with Betty's performance as the plant supervisor. When you talk to Betty about the survey results, she stated that the workers did not......

Value of Mba

...spite of these factors, obtaining a Master’s degree in business (MBA) is still worth all the time and expense because of the value it serves. Having an MBA will help to make me more marketable in the health care industry and more likely to be considered for a management or administrative position. In the following pages I will discuss the reasons that, with the career goal of becoming a nurse executive, the value of an MBA degree outweighs the struggles that I may encounter while in the graduate program. In addition to acquiring a Master’s degree in nursing, to be a successful nurse executive one must also have some knowledge of how a business runs. The American Association of Nurse Executives (AAONE) lists standard competencies for the nurse executive. These competencies are outlined in a 2008 article in Nursing Economics and include skill sets in areas of financial management, human resource management, strategic management, and information management and technology. A nurse executive must be able to represent the nursing population while understanding the mechanics of the business. A nurse executive who can understand financial implications of clinical decisions and fiscal matters is a huge asset to the business aspect of the organization (Thomas et al., 2008). All of the competencies that the AAONE considers standards for nurse executives can be learned through an MBA program therefore making having an MBA an advantage for an aspiring nurse executive. Stichler......

Why an Mba

...Why an MBA The MBA is not an end in itself, but a means to an end. It is a degree designed to give you the ability to develop your career to its fullest potential, at an accelerated pace. What will you get out of an MBA? Aside from a powerful life experience, the MBA degree should supply three main value propositions: Skills, Networks, and Brand. Skills These include the "hard skills" of economics, finance, marketing, operations, management, and accounting, as well as the "soft skills " of leadership, teamwork, ethics, and communication that are so critical for effective management. MBA students acquire these skills inside and outside the classroom. Since MBA programs attract people from very diverse industries and cultures, a program should be able to leverage these differences and translate them into learning opportunities. Networks An MBA degree program offers access to a network of MBA students, alumni, faculty, and business and community leaders. This network can be very useful when beginning a job search, developing a career path, building business relationships in your current career, or pursuing expertise outside your current field. For example, entrepreneurs need access to capital, business partners, vendors, and clients. Arts-related businesses need access to funding and strategic management in order to position themselves to be relevant in the marketplace. Global businesses need access to local business cultures as they expand their enterprises to new......

Decision for Mba by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) to give them an advantage over their peers. Although a person is furthering their education and refining their skills, the decision of obtaining an MBA is met with opposing views. One of the most debated aspects of an MBA program is its ability to set a person up for financial success. Many wonder if the benefits of the degree are worth investing in if it may limit options and create debt. In an article from CBS Money Watch, author Trunk (2011) comments that the amount of time one invests in getting an MBA could be applied to on-the-job experience instead. The author argues that experience will equip them as equally as investing that time in education only without having student loans. On-the-job experience is important, but continuing education and refining communication skills will help to broaden a student’s ability to apply oneself in the work place. Moreover, there is generally a financial earnings increase associated with successful graduates of MBA programs. In data collected from Occupational Outlook Quarterly in 2003, the median weekly earnings of a person with a master’s degree were approximately $422 higher than those without a degree (Lacey & Crosby, 2004-2005). That is $22,900 more per year on average. Assuming that median incomes have increased with inflation since 2003, and considering that the average student loan for an MBA is currently $31,927 (, a person should not have...
