...In The News - Amazon Signs $600M Cloud Infrastructure Deal With CIA At first glance, when I saw this article, I was more curious than anything, and had no thought of how this piece of news could be blended into the BUSN-412 discussion thread. However, after reading through the article, it became apparent to me that Amazon’s deal with the CIA was still a business transaction, albeit with the Federal Government. My thoughts began to race as I pondered how this would be different from any other business decision reached by such an enormous company like Amazon. After all, they are a multi-billion-dollar company, who are in business to make money. In an article published by CRN, a very reliable technology news organization, unconfirmed reports state that Amazon has reached a 10-year, $600 million cloud computing deal with Amazon. Amazon, if confirmed, and already a major player in the building of Cloud Infrastructure, will have scored a very large victory in the tech world. With such a sizeable deal in the works, one could speculate about some of what went on behind closed doors. As it may relate to our week two discussion thread on SWOT, I would speculate that the CIA did its own SWOT analysis of Amazon. I am sure that the CIA would not have even considered Amazon for this venture, before scrutinizing Amazon from top to bottom. For the business managers that were involved in this process, it should have been the standard way to conduct business, save for the fact it was......

Mediating

...Mediator neutrality and impartiality There are two models of mediation to consider the first is neutrality and the second is impartiality from the mediator. Neutrality is what the mediator brings to the mediation session. The mediator does not benefit from the session as a neutral party. He or she may gain some personal satisfaction of getting the parties through the session; however, there is no benefit from the outcome, because the mediator has no stakes in the outcome. (Spence, 2010). Tonya Alexander explained neutrality and impartiality as being able to understand both client’s perspectives, interests, and goals. To be neutral and impartial means not having a bias or judgment against another for any reason. She also believes that to be neutral and impartial one must balance clients’ needs and make sure clients feel heard and that they are able to have an active role in mediation with no abuse of the process. (T. Alexander, personal communication, July 18, 2013). Confidentiality According to Alexander Law Office, PC, Mediation communications are confidential and may not be disclosed to any other person. The parties to mediation may agree in writing that all or parts of the mediation communications are not confidential. Alexander has a fee agreement that sets out the confidential nature of mediation communication and work-product; she goes through this element carefully with the client at the first meeting. If the mediator has breached confidentiality, he or she......

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, visiting Berlin, urged the German government to do more to boost lackluster domestic demand, which the U.S. and others argue is partly to blame for the anemic economic growth in the euro zone as a whole. Do Tax Cheats Solve the U.K.’s Productivity Puzzle? URL:http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2013/10/22/do-tax-cheats-solve-the-u-k-s-productivity-puzzle/?KEYWORDS=productivity abstract: Economists in Britain have long been scratching their heads over the nation’s troubling “productivity puzzle.” Now Markit, the financial information provider that publishes the purchasing managers’ indexes used to gauge activity in the global economy, has tentatively suggested that former tax cheats might be muddying the waters. Britain has a bigger workforce than it did before it tipped into recession in 2008 yet is producing far fewer goods and services. This mismatch between output and jobs has led to a collapse in productivity, a measure of how effectively an economy uses its resources that’s an important driver of future growth prospects. ...Business Policy 3/15/14 The article that I chose to talk about is about Apple and Samsung; they have both been competing to be number one in the market for phones, TVs, and now watches and new advances in technology. Apple has a huge a range of customers who are very loyal to them and that are what had made them so successful in expanding their business. Samsung is also very successful because of the advances that they have been making with Android and the new Tizen strategy. Tizen is a new form of technology that allows manufactures to turn phones in watches and other everyday items. Tizen and Android are very similar and most people cannot tell them apart if the systems are switched. Apple has a huge disadvantage with Samsung because they do not move as fast as Samsung. Samsung’s disadvantage is that China can easily make knockoffs of the brand and sell them for as low as $35 compared to $700. * Samsung’s marketing strategy is to cover everything that they can internationally, spending 4 billion dollars. * Apple’s business strategy is to keep its loyal customers happy with the products that they currently own. * Samsung’s business strategy is to keep the customers that they have while trying to gain new customers. * Samsung and Apple’s main challenges are environmental because people care about what their phones can do. Which means applications like Facebook, Instagram, and Candy crush? * Another area that they are competing in is the tablet market,......

...News and Current Affairs Programme 1 ITN National and World News This programme is a national type and is broadcast right across the British Isles on a daily basis. It is not a specialist programme in the sense that it does not focus on one particular genre of news.eg sport, instead it covers every area and delivers it in a formal manner. The particular programme that I have taken notes on appeared on our screens and was broadcast on 10/10/10 at 6:00pm. It was presented by Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale and the headlines of each individual story were read out in the studio. This was then followed by images and graphics appearing on screen as the voice-overs of the news presenters could clearly be heard explaining the story. The first story that was covered was about how the Vitamin B could potentially benefit people that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The first part of this story used graphics on the screen as well as the use of voice-overs to narrate what the diagrams and statistics on screen meant. The story then progressed into interviews with experts on the matter, all of a medical background and with extensive knowledge in Alzheimer’s disease and also the Vitamin B. These interviews were taken in medical rooms with clear equipment and charts visible on camera the whole time to reiterate the issue. Finally the story was concluded with footage of old age pensioners who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and a summary voice over being made on......

...The company “Nutiva” did a re-branding campaign the beginning of 2014 for its product line with new labels. Nutiva is the world’s leading brand of all-organic hemp foods, coconut oil, red palm oil and chia seeds. Their logo is: “Nourishing People and Planets. Revolutionizing the way the world eats”. They are a values-driven brand, dedicated to providing nourishing food and supplements. The beginning of this year, they launched a clean simple new look to the labels of their products which hadn’t had a packaging change in 15 years. Their inspiration for the change was to look as fresh, healthy and vital on the outside of the package as what they have inside. The labels are simple, clean, modern looking white background with watercolor inspired designs of the plant product that is inside. The website article found at Nutiva.com was my choice for this assignment. This re-branding idea is very important in successful advertising to help rejuvenate a product. Nutiva’s original labels were very every day common blending in with its competition. The fresh look will attract new consumers that may be buying other similar products. Media campaigns with the new look that were launched by Nutiva are part of the marketing mix to help this product sell. The internet marketing and advertising Nutiva has done with the “new” look are the campaign mix that the DeVry course in “Advertising and Public Relations” is teaching. Nutiva wants to keep its brand image consistent and also have it......

21 Centure

...The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? Use examples and details in your answer. Man, through the ages, has undergone many changes from the time when he depicted a herd of mammoths on the walls of his cave to these days when he can create beautiful pictures and even make coffee by use of computer technologies without leaving his favorite chair. The 20th century made huge steps in developing computer technologies and reached many goals that made our life much easier. What should we expect in the 21st century? First of all, I think that the pace of our life will speed up: we will move faster from one place to another, from one continent to another using high speed jet airplanes. Second of all, I believe that we will be able to do many things that take much time now without leaving our house. Computers will be everywhere including out clothes. Many people will have chips and mini computers inserted in their heads to hold huge amount of information and have a quick access to it. But what will be the most amazing thing in the 21st century is the flights to the outer space and Mars that will be available to all people. Scientists say that Mars has many things similar to the Earth's. Moreover, they say that with the help of modern technology people can artificially create conditions that will allow people to live there on the constant basis. To sum up, I am sure that many amazing changes will be brought by the 21st century.......

...In the News Apple has revealed a new promotional material that lets its users have the ability to switch between major mobile carriers for their data plans. Apple will now ship out in their new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 a built-in sim card that allows users to purchase wireless service on the spot. Previous ipads have always had the ability to let you hop between carriers just by swapping out the sim card; however, Apple has simplified this process further with one sim card that lets you hop onto whichever carriers is listed on their iOS. These carriers include AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S., and EE in the U.K. Apple does plan to expand the list of global carriers in the future. Why does this matter? Well I think this really takes the carriers out of the retail loop and makes it easier for Apple users to be able to switch seamlessly between the three major U.S. carriers for on the go data plans. It makes the carriers a lot closer to the interchangeable pipes that they’re afraid of seeing because it effectively lessens the powers of the mobile carriers since they rely on their control of the retail sales and service channels to prevent customers from switchovers and to be able to upsell additional products. Interestingly enough, Verizon has opted out of this new Apple sim so far, which shows the disproportionate strength of Verizon in our market as compared to the other three carriers. Verizon thinks that they have enough market power to tell Apple what to......

Mediating Mark Duggan

...Mediating Mark Duggan The press is a section of the mass media industry that focuses on presenting current news to the public and is one of the largest forms of media we have in Britain. The press and media in general insist that it is only fact and truth that is reported to the public, however, there are times when the media either permits itself to be manipulated or to act as the agent of manipulation; seemingly, we as the public, receive the opinions of the few, select people that are running the mass media who use the power of mediation to position audience response through encoded values with the media acting as an opinion leader (2-step flow). Mark Duggan was shot by armed police in Tottenham, August 2011, after officers stopped the cab he was in to make an arrest. Duggan was unarmed at the time yet just hours later stories were circulating the media about a dramatic ‘shootout’ with Duggan represented as a ‘violent gangster’. Within just two days of his death, riots had erupted in London as well as copycat riots in other cities up and down the country and reported globally by the press. Before getting out of hand, the riots were a direct response to the actions of the police. Mark Duggan didn’t hit the front page until after the riots had begun and it is likely that, similar to the case of Stephen Lawrence, the audience will never fully know the reality of the initial event. The final inquest report (2014) ruled that the killing was lawful. Looking back on the......

...News The News is a wonderful and scary thing at the same time. I personally steer clear of the news as it tends to blow matters way out of proportions and with being in the military I rather be briefed on things of national security by my superiors vice the local news that only gets pebbles from the locals. I think that the news can be good at times, but in my experiences it tends to stress society out way more than it needs to be. An example of this is I have been to Bahrain numerous times, and all my mother would see on the television is riots and unruly behavior there. I on the other hand did not watch the news, got the security brief from my superiors and carried on my mission. While I was there it was nothing as what my mother and the news had depicted. Every time I have been there it has been peaceful and the locals have always been so very nice. Audience The intended audience was originally for locals, as it was broadcasted on the local news channels. The written news article I chose was from New York Times. Since the incident occurred in Phoenix, AZ, I purposefully chose the New York Times as it is located across the country. This choice makes for a better comparison of data from across state lines. Credible MSNBC and the New York Times are both credible sources that individuals rely on everyday to hear anything from the weather to local in international news. Both of these reports were similar in nature. The New York Times tends to go more in depth, so their...

...In The News Chipotle Mexican Grill was first founded on July 13th 1993 in Denver, Colorado by Steve Ells. With his experiences in culinary school, his vision was to establish a restaurant that was simple and creative. Chipotle Mexican Grill became one of the fastest growing industries in the world. There are now a total of 1700 locations worldwide located in the United States, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada. Recently, there has been an E. coli outbreak with Chipotle restaurants which led to the closing of 43 stores. All cases of E. coli have been confirmed in the Washington and Oregon area. Many victims have filed lawsuits against Chipotle because they have become ill due to the bacteria. Anyone that have eaten at Chipotle between Oct. 14-23 have experienced vomiting, stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea. Health officials are urging anyone experiencing those symptoms to report to the hospital immediately because E. coli has a possibly of leading to death. The public is questioning Chipotle about how the E. coli outbreak even began. Many assumed that the products used in the chain restaurant have been unsanitary. The most common way to spread E. coli is through feces. Chipotle released a statement that they believe the source of the E. coli is from their vegetables and that they are doing their best to investigate the situation. This isn’t the first time that Chipotle faced food safety issues within their chain. In August, a Chipotle restaurant in California was......

...A news article discusses current or recent news of either general interest (i.e. daily newspapers) or of a specific topic (i.e. political or trade news magazines, club newsletters, or technology news websites). A news article can include accounts of eyewitnesses to the happening event. It can contain photographs, accounts, statistics, graphs, recollections, interviews, polls, debates on the topic, etc. Headlines can be used to focus the reader’s attention on a particular (or main) part of the article. The writer can also give facts and detailed information following answers to general questions like who, what, when, where, why and how. Quoted references can also be helpful. References to people can also be made through the written accounts of interviews and debates confirming the factuality of the writer’s information and the reliability of his source. The writer can use redirection to ensure that the reader keeps reading the article and to draw her attention to other articles. For example, phrases like "Continued on page 3” redirect the reader to a page where the article is continued. While a good conclusion is an important ingredient for newspaper articles, the immediacy of a deadline environment means that copy editing often takes the form of deleting everything past an arbitrary point in the story corresponding to the dictates of available space on a page. Therefore, newspaper reporters are trained to write in inverted pyramid style, with all the most important......

The Mediating Affect of Crf Within the Central Nucleus of the Amygdala in Rats

...The Mediating Affect of CRF Within the Central Nucleus of the Amygdala in Rats 1.Summarize the background of the article, and how does it relate to the general article. Alcohol consumption is characterized by excessive consumption which leads to feelings of increased anxiety and other negative emotional states.Consequently, these emotions lead to further consumption.Similar to human alcoholics, ethanol- dependent animals show signs of anxiety like behaviors and self administrate ethanol during periods of withdrawal. CRF, also known as corticotropin releasing factor helps mediate the increased anxiety during withdrawal.Additionally, regions of the amygdala are comprised of the CRF system, although unknown where the specific sites are responsible for the CRF component of excessive drinking. Also, numerous studies have shown that the amygdala is involved in “mediating the behavioral and physiological responses associated with anxiety.” This relates to the general article which focuses on the consumption of drug and alcohol, triggering feelings of anxiety which can be quieted by consuming more of it.Specifically, the amygdala is the part of the brain where the feelings of anxiety are triggered. Moreover, new research is showing alcohol's involvement in the transformation of the chemical architecture of the brain, allowing the brain's stress response to contribute to its dependency.  CRF, also known as the corticotrophin releasing factor, is a chemical that is involved in the......
