My Family

Have you ever influenced by some important people that helped you be the person that you are today? I have. The people that have had influence on me are the most important people, my family. But before I begin talking about my family, I want to show to you the place that me and my family spend most of the time together which also means something important to me and my family. This place is called the family room. This room is small but beautiful. It is painted in white and has three windows decorated with beautiful curtains. By the windows you can see a nice view of some beautiful trees and a nice park across street. On the walls there are family photos like the ones that show where my brother and I were born. The other one is my graduation photo. Some family member photos like my grandparents, and some paintings made by my brother. So this is our room, which is very important to us and has a lot of special things, but the most special part of this room is when it brings my family together. I could begin the story of my life with a picture of my parents. They are important because they helped in my development. Also, my parents gave me the things that I needed to grow up in the moment that I needed and they still gave me everything that I needed to become someone important in the future. Beside these things is the education that I have gained all in my life. My basic needs like food, clothes, medicine, a place to live, and the most important thing, the love all were give by my family. Like for instance by being there when I needed somebody to give me speeches and advices when I do something wrong. Also, they care for me when I am sick and they give me the necessary things to get better. They teach me good values like how to behave, to respect other people, and to share with other people. Sometimes my parents push me in certain…...

Being Strong for My Family

...Being Strong For My Family Parenting never played well in my childhood as it seems my parents were never for it. Though it made me a stronger person than my parents ever was. It was always just me and my two younger brothers on our own most of the time. My parents didn’t get married until I was three years old, since my dad was tired of the government taking money out of his paychecks for child support he just decided to marry my mom that way he’s not obligated to do so. Then came along my brother Eric, and that’s when the abusing started with me and my mother. One time the cops did came and took my dad but for some reason my mother let him come back home. Then a year went by and comes along my second brother Mickey who’s born on Christmas day, a lucky boy he was. And the abuse continued, and became normal where my mom and dad would argue at least once a week. I would usually have to pretend I don’t hear anything or my dad would come at me next too. He was a alcoholic and gambler, drinking a case of beer every other night and going to the casino on his days off. There was a time he was gone for three nights and me and my mom went to find him at the casino, which turns out he had gambled the rent money away and was trying to win it back, of course that didn’t happen. My dad never liked me just because I was a girl I would get those side shaved bowl haircuts, with boots and a jean jacket outfit to school, which kids always made fun of me about. He would never drive me......

Me and My Family

...Analysis interpretation of ’Me and my Family’ “Me and my Family” is a short story from 1997. The narrator is a third-person limited narrator and is subjective because it conveys the thoughts, feelings, opinions of the father, Stew. So when the narrator is subjective, we only see the story from one side and therefore we cannot verify if the narrating is true. Beside Stew, we have Masha who is the wife of Stew and mother of Kitty. Kitty plays an important and great role in this short story. Apart from the family, we hear a bit from Norm (an acquaintance of the father) and other irrelevant people. Kitty has been living in South Carolina and is described as quiet, untactful and aggressive (p. 2, l. 25) by the narrator. When Kitty became a teenager, it has just gone downhill. She came out as lesbian when she was 16 (p. 2, l. 37) and that did not exactly help her relationship with her father. With downhill, the narrator describes; “He did not remember precisely when it had happened, but Kitty, his beautiful, happy little girl, turned into a glum, weird teenager that other kids picked on. She got skinny and ugly. ” (p. 2, l. 40). The quote illustrates one of the themes of the story that is the poor relationship between father and daughter and their quarrels, as can be seen on page 3, line 86: “He grabbed her and shook her, but he could not shake the conviction off her face.” However, this is from the father’s perspective. As mentioned before, we never get to hear Kitty’s side......

He or she will create their own flip chart so that they can have the opportunity to practice while putting it together. As they flip up different tabs on the chart, they will see that they’ve created a new word from our list. This would be a really great tool in working with my emergent reader on the -um word family as well. I have also come up with another method of creating an organizer to help teach my student these words. The organizer I have created is pretty much just like a concept map. The word family, in this case um, goes right in the center of the page. From the center, I have provided pictures that surround the -um family, some that contain -um and some that do not. The student will be asked to color every picture of a -um sound and draw lines from them to the circle in the middle. This helps the student become more familiar with how to recognize the words we have learned while also recognizing words that do not pertain to the -um family. The following text sample was created with the help...

The Impact of Gender Roles in My Family

...Kylie Schmidt SOC 101-016 22 February 2014 Gender Roles The Impact of Gender Roles In My Family The textbook definition of gender roles refers to the expectations regarding the proper behavior, attitudes, and activities of males and females. Basically, we are born either XX or XY but we are not predetermined to occupy roles as male or female. Rather, we assume these roles through a process called socialization. Socialization is a process by which people learn the attitudes, values, and behaviors appropriate for members of their culture, in this case, male and female roles. There are a lot of factors that impact a child’s socialization into feminine and masculine forms. These include the adults, older siblings, mass media, and religious and educational institutions that surround us. This paper will focus on the primary agents of childhood socialization: parents. Specifically my parents, and how they played a critical role in my socialization and gender role process. Firstly, my mother played a important role in guiding me into the feminine norm for our society. When I was born, immediately I was dressed in girly, pink, or frilly outfits. I grew up playing with dolls, pretending to be their mom, caring for them, etc. I helped my mom in the kitchen and helped her clean. My room was painted pink with flowers along the borders. My mom put into dance as a young girl, rather than football if I had been born with a Y chromosome. These are the first experiences I had as a......

How to Manage My Family Time

...How to manage my Family Time Arbra Jones GEN 200 Barbara White How to Better Manage my Family Time For most adults twenty-four hours in a day comes and goes faster than they would like. Most days start before the sun rises and ends well into the night with little time in between to notice the possible change in weather. Juggling the responsibilities of family, work, social life and for a growing majority school, requires skills one would normally find in a traveling circus. A person could spend the better part of their day away from home fulfilling work related responsibilities and return only to find there is not enough time for family. So how can a person find the time to complete so many tasks in twenty four hours and still have time to spend with their family? I have learned in order to make sure I have enough time during the day for all my responsibilities as well as time for my family, I must utilize proper time management skills. One of the first steps in proper time management is creating a strategy where goals are planned out. I first need to determine what my daily goals are and create a schedule prioritizing them by order of importance. According to, “proper time management starts with prioritizing goals”. Once I create my daily list of goals I can determine which goals will have the most priority. For goals that must be carried out day to day, an example being helping my children complete homework requirements, they......

My Family

...There are so many things that are important to me, but only a few that could greatly affect my life if I didn’t have or accomplish them. The biggest things to me are success, family, and freedom. These are all things that are essential to my life in so many different aspects. The most important thing to me is success; it’s a thing I must have. Success can mean a lot of different things to different people; it just depends on the person. Success to me is a business standpoint; I have so many goals I’ve set for myself business and financial wise, success comes to me in those ways. In order for me to feel like I’ve actually succeeded in life I must reach these goals. If I reach these goals I have many plans that will contribute to the benefiting of society, like starting a camp for all types of kids. It would be somewhere they could go in the summer to stay out of trouble and have tons of fun without the risk of going through many of the pressures children experience while out with friends hanging out at home. I would have four wheelers; fishing, camping, and many other things children love to do. Another thing that is extremely important in my life is family. At my age not a lot of people think about having one but its something that I know I want. I mean with all the plans I have for my future they wouldn’t be as great if I didn’t have people to share it with or give to when I passed away. Also having little kids and doing father activities with them is something I really......

My Family

...What is Family? Defining the concept of family is difficult because it can have various meanings to different people. It may mean those who are immediate relatives, as being in love, providing security, socialization, or something completely different. The United States Census Bureau (2010) defines family as a, “Primary social group involving social or generational alliances, permanence, concern for the total person, heightened emotionality, caring for one another, mutual goals, an altruistic orientation to members, and a governance approach that is nurturing.” Freidman, Bowden and Jones (2003) also states family is composed of persons joined together by bonds of marriage, blood, or adoption and residing in the same household (p.9). These are just some of the many definitions of family I have come across in my search. We are never given a chance to choose our family, however that is why knowing and learning the meaning of family is essential. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and define what family is. I will explain my own familial experiences over the years, and how this definition is constantly changing. I will also share the perspectives of others on how they view family. Finally, I will share my definition of family, including the theoretical foundation I find most helpful to explain it. Various Perspectives on Family In recent weeks, I have had the opportunity to speak with my own family, coworkers, and friends about what family means to them. My children...

My Family

...Over the course of the semester, I have learned a lot about myself and my family as a whole. Family problems and social change has made me realized that family plays an important role in shaping your actions and forming your perceptions. Family dynamics have obviously changed over the centuries; things that are going on in this day and age are not the same as it was decades ago. As for my family, we come from an Afro-Caribbean background; we are natives of Haiti. My parents migrated from Haiti to Bahamas and from there to America with four children, in hopes of providing a better future for us. They worked odd jobs here and there just to provide shelter, food, and other necessities that we would need. The only burden my parents ever placed on my siblings and I, were to receive an education and strive to be successful. They made many sacrifices to provide us with these opportunities, and for that I will forever be grateful. Nonetheless, I will be discussing the differences between generations of my family. I decided to interview my grandmother Ermilie and my father Luc. Themes in Ermilie’s Life (born 1936) Ermilie is my grandmother on my mother’s side. She is the only one of my grandparents that is still alive. Seeing that we were immigrants for quite some time, I only had access to my immediate family and a few cousins. I met my grandmother for the first time on June 4th, 2014. Over the years I could only talk to her; it was a joyous moment for me to finally put a face......

My Family

...Literacy Narrative I grew up in a very fortunate family; we never really had to worry about a low income, and we were able to buy extra stuff and go on other trips unlike other families. I never really understood how we were able to do this seeing as my parents did not go to college. They also rarely ever read; if they did it would be a magazine or an article online, and they never wrote. My parents would always push me to read more and always do well on my writing assignments and review them over and over again so they would be the best of my ability. Back then I never really understood why they would make me do all of this, but now that I am a bit older and understand how important these traits are, I understand why they did this. I’ll never forget my English teacher my junior year of high school, Mr. Stanizzi. He was the most inspirational teacher I have ever had in my life. He genuinely loved his job and made English class fun, and fascinating. By this time I thought for sure that no teacher was ever going to change my opinion on writing, but he proved me wrong. There was something he did while teaching and analyzing poems that really struck my interest. Every week we would have a period just focusing on either writing our own poems or analyzing them. There was one particular poem that I was extremely proud of and showed Stanizzi the poem. He was shocked that I wrote such a good poem. He liked my poem so much he read it to the class for an......

My Family

...having turkey for Thanksgiving?” My family has become set in our ways when it comes to the food menus for holidays. You could say my family has created folkways for our holiday meals governing the “when and what to eat” -- concept. Folkways are defined by Joan Ferrante, as norms that apply to the mundane aspects or details of daily life (Ferrante 50). My family has developed many folkways around the holidays, so much so that if anyone tries to change them up it disrupts the norm of the holiday for us. The traditional family does everything by the book as far as preparing holiday meals but sometimes changes up the menu. In my family, we are so set in our way that if something is missing, it can cause drama and make for grumpy family members. My family has developed many folkways that are centered on the foods we eat for certain holiday meals, such as 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The typical 4th of July meal that my family prepares is barbequed hamburgers, hot dogs, potato and/or pasta salads, chips, dips, and fruit, usually cantaloupe and watermelon. Thanksgiving dinner consists of turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy and all the other traditional Thanksgiving dishes. Christmas dinner is usually prime rib, baked potatoes, salad and all things that go along with a prime rib dinner. Our most traditional Christmas meal is prime rib, and it would be really strange if that was not on the table. Since my family is big on the traditional......

My Family

...Family Business Discovery Project * Katie Toomey ENTR 423 February 26, 2016 My father’s side of the family is not very proud of its past from what I can tell. They aren’t proud or they are trying to distance themselves from events that happened in the past that they think are severe enough to erase from history. My family proved to me that past generations directly affect your work ethic, not always in the best of ways. My grandfather worked hard to get away from his father, my grandmother tricked her dad to let her get a job to escape his alcoholism. This shows me that it is up to the individual to interpret their situation and decide on how to act. It is theses interpretations that lead many in my family to make these crazy impulsive decisions. My grandfather, John Toomey, was 13 when he got off a train purposefully at the wrong stop and decide to travel and work until he was old enough to join the Navy. He saw his family only 3 times after that and wanted very little to do with them. My grandfather thought he was the reason for his mother’s death, but she had died from pneumonia six months after he was born. In a typical fashion no one in the family wanted to speak about it so he went on with his life thinking he was what killed his mother until he was 42 years old. His family moved to Washington to work at a lumber mill and he didn’t want to join them and his new step-mother. He worked as a farm hand, grocer boy, gas pumper, and any other job he could......

...Returning To School Myron Keys ENG 121 Jill Mosley October 24, 2011 My main reason and ultimate goal for returning to school is first is gain my education in which I can now place myself in getting a better job or even advancing at my current one in which we all can succeed. This is my second go around with online school I was real hesitant of going back to school online. The main issue I thought I would have is actually learning something by going online. I myself felt I was a in class room thought student since now I have started back going to school and gotten over the fear of online classes. I now have the new confidence in being able to complete my degree online. I honestly want to obtain my degree so I can set the standard to my daughter in how important in getting an education can place you and also be rewarding start for future in endeavors or what she may feel is right for her. So returning to school is a blessing in two ways one I do get my education and two I am still setting the standard for my daughter. I want to be at the point where getting my education will be both beneficial to me and the example I am setting for my child in getting a good education. Now that I have a set standard on returning I feel my hardest and most daring task would be completing my assignments on time. I feel by applying myself more in my classes I know I can be successful in getting my education. I first had a fear of returning to school due to it being an online school...
