Chp. 1 Case Projects

Case Project 1-1 – Since there would be 18 people connected to the network, I would use a server-based network because it would be easier to set up which users can access which part of the server. It would be centralized and much easier to edit permissions rather than having to go to each of the 18 computers and do it manually, especially if some users will be taken off or put on projects at the snap of some fingers.

Case Project 1-2 – I would use a peer-to-peer internetwork since this would be the cheapest and easiest for CNT Books to use. We would need to buy Ethernet cables and a router. We would also need to give the computers names/addresses.

Case Project 1-3 – Would it be inefficient to have a huge internetwork? I’d probably go with a huge internetwork, but we’d definitely have to buy some more routers and cables. Although I’m not sure if network communication would be inefficient, since it’s only four floors’ difference, would attenuation become a problem?

Case Project 1-4 – I’d use a WPAN to connect my PDA and GPS, or Bluetooth if available.

In Zac Dalton’s first year as manager, the company saw the highest amount of sales in units with the least amount of units produced. With this being the case, he was most likely correct in his claim of clearing out old inventory. The income statement that showed the loss absorbed the cost of the excess inventory at the time of sale. However, when we apply the cost of the excess inventory during the year it was produced, we get a better snapshot of what the sales portion of the business looks like. In 2010 and 2011, the business was producing more than they were selling. This created a higher break-even point which was not met either year. In 2012, since there wasn’t as much produced, there was a lower break-even point and Renton sold 808 units over the break-even point. This level of sales helped to create a contribution margin of 73%, a 21% increase from 2012. Not only was 2012 the most profitable year Renton has seen since they have been in business, it was the first year the company exceeded its break-even point in unit and dollar sales. The proposed legislation could also end up alienating families who have decided to donate life saving organs regardless of any compensation. Many may think that offering economic benefits, wether directly or indirectly in exchange for organ donations or assigning monetary value to the human body, or body parts, is inconsistent with our values as a society. The proposed legislation could also promote suicidal behavior in people who are in need of monetary help or want to help out their family and loved ones. This type of network is simple to configure, so that would be an advantage for the volunteers that will be working there with minimum experience. With a peer-to-peer network, all of the computers will have the same roles. No computer will have more authority over the others. In our case all the lab computers run only the TCP/IP protocol on the Ethernet network and all the computers use 3Com NICs. This is actually good information because as we know some manufacturers have several different OUIs (Organizationally Unique Identifier). In this particular case 3Com Corporation uses its own OUI and standards for their NICs. Ethernet frames are different from token ring frames and the two will not interact with each other on a network. Although we can conceivably transmit both token ring and Ethernet frames on a network. Ethernet interfaces cannot interpret token ring frames and vice versa. By changing the frame type (in our case student changed it) which workstation's NIC was using to transmit data from Ethernet to token ring, obviously the connection between these two networking technologies was gone.
