Are the songs of ‘Oh! What a lovely war’ a complete and accurate summary of the experience of soldiers on the western front?
The musical ‘Oh! What a lovely war’ directed by Joan Littlewood in 1963 portrays the experiences and reality of the war in the four songs, sung by the soldiers, to some level of accuracy. However extracts from Banham, Luff and Vyvyen Brandon suggest otherwise.
In some ways, the songs directed by Joan Littlewood do portray the reality of life on the western front and the dangers on the front line and in the reserve trenches. Joan accurately describes the soldiers who want to be ‘Far far from Wipers […] where German snipers can’t get at [them]’. The lyrics give the impression that the soldiers were faced with danger and they wanted to end the war to avoid being shot by ‘German snipers’. This evidence is supported by the Brandon extracts which look at the key issues of how the troops managed to endure the horrors of fighting in the trenches. The extracts describe how ‘at any moment’ soldiers could have been ‘shot by a sniper, gassed or blown to pieces by a shell, mine or bomb.’ This therefore consolidates the idea of the front line being hazardous and proves Joan Littlewoods’ portrayed impression of the war as accurate.
Additionally, it can be argued that Joan Littlewood to some extent accurately describes the conditions of the trenches and what the soldiers had to endure. In the song ‘Far Far From Wipers’ it refers to bad conditions such as ‘damp’ dugouts and ‘cold’ feet. The portrayed impression is that the trenches resulted in filthy conditions and exposure to harsh weather, which agrees with the Brandon extracts. Brandon underlines the frequent ‘wet, muddy conditions’ and how the soldiers were ‘liable to get a fungal infection known as ‘trench foot’’. This information correlates with the songs in ‘Oh! What a lovely war’ which subsequently…...

What Factors Led to the End of Cold War

...What factors led to the end of the Cold War? The Cold War, which is a much discussed topic till today in the political corridors, was an extended conflict at worldwide level between two great powers, where one favored communism and the other favored capitalism (Baylis and Smith, 2007:770). It started in 1947 and ended after a long haul in 1989 and resulted in the collapse of one side, which was Soviet power in Europe. There were many factors which played role in the end of the Cold War. But the major factors were: the reforms brought about by Gorbachev, weakening economy of Soviet Union, the Satellite States refraining from supporting USSR, and various external factors. The different external factors which led to the end of the cold war were: diplomatic relations between USSR and United States, several treaties signed between them which limited the use of arms. While all the above mentioned factors were important, the leading factor contributing to the end of Cold War was the radical reforms brought by Gorbachev which made all the systemic problems turn into systemic crises. This in turn led to the unwilling initiation of the divide of the Soviet Union and as a result to the end of the Cold War (Crockatt, 2007:115). There was a difference in attitude of Gorbachev from his predecessors as he was not strongly adhered to Stalinist Legacy (Crockatt, 2006:114). The reforms brought by him such as perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness) are considered as the most......

What Do You Know About the Cold War?

...Cold War Perception is different person to person. If Italy and Greece is drowning in despair Americans may not even think anything is going on. This is what was going on in the beginning of the Cold War just two years after WW2, 1947. Though what do people living during 1960 or even the children of the baby boomers know about the Cold War? I believe that the American Perception of the Cold War is very different from what was going on. The first person I interviewed was my father in law Dan Faris. Dan said “ To know about the Cold War all you have to know about is the Iron Curtain cause they could be synonymous. This is very true the Iron Curtain is defined by the Eastern and Western separation of Europe by Communism. This is what started the Cold War. During the European Financial Collapse people would kling to whatever promises people could make them to get them out of their poverty. Stalin came in and promised a better tomorrow and communism spread. The United States saw this as a threat and they wanted to stop Communism therefore Truman employed Marshall and henceforth Marshall aid was offered to the people in those European countries. Which in turn threatened Stalin. Dan said that this all started in 1957 which is actually not true though since he was born in 1955 may have been what he perceived. All of this actually started in 1945. During these games that the Russians and U.S. was playing with each other soon it turned ugly when bombs were placed in Cuba which...

What Is Piece Without War

...What is Peace without War? First and foremost, Bob Marley is said to be one of the best most influential reggae singers known. The way that many artists like singers, musicians, etc., view Bob Marley as an inspiration and muse towards whatever it is that they do. Bob Marley stood up for the injustices he faced and saw in the world near and away from him. Bob Marley was one of the first “colored” person to speak up about how the world, mainly the “white man” treated “colored people.” He not only focused on the indifference on the different skin colors, but also on the poor. Bob Marley’s songs were aimed towards the freedom and liberation of the poor colored people that were in control by other countries. Most people saw his work at the time to be rebellious, but once they looked past that, most of them say that what Bob Marley was saying was in fact true. Music was his way of communication and this is why he got attention, because so many people use it to express their feelings towards one another or to soothe the pain one feels inside as he did. Music creates atmosphere; it can bring people together, because there is more than one person feeling the exact same thing you are. In this case, these three songs “Burnin’ and Lootin’, “Concrete Jungle”, and “War”, the artist’s lyrics are powerful and meaningful to anyone whom feels the same towards political injustice, poverty, inequality and or national struggles in the wake if Imperialism. People are not being treated equally,...

The Civil War and What It Meant to Be Civilized

...During the period of 1861-1865 that is commonly known as the Civil War, both the northern and the confederate states exhibited variegated forms of what it means to be civilized. At the bottom of it, the Civil War exhibited the most bloodshed on American soil at a singular point in time. For this reason it must be stated that both The Union and The Confederates both acted out bloodthirsty and carnal impulses. The difference that was displayed was that the liberalism and regard for expanded civil rights that was the basis for The Union’s war stance was countered by a stalwart reactionary ideological platform that The Confederacy clung to. Essentially, civility was at an all-time low during the bloodshed of the Civil war. Over 500,000 lives were claimed, however the etiquette and ideological platforms of both sides proved to be The old world charm of the South was encapsulated by John Mosby and his revenge against a Union trooper killing a young child in front of the child’s mother. Mosby exclaimed that revenge was not a primary, or even a secondary motivation. He honestly believed that he had to kill in order to stop the killing (Civil War Times, 31). This etiquette and honor displayed during the bloodshed was in contradistinction to the crass and needless killing committed by the Union soldier. This shows how oftentimes ideologies can mask the deeper, truer feelings......

What a Child Thinks War Is

...When I was little, I used to think a soldier meant bravery and courage, but later I realized I could be darkening the lives of many. If you were a soldier, given orders to kill someone by someone you don’t even know their name; would you even do it? Is that guy cold blooded? Is he responsible for the lost of that person’s life?Or he’ll just stand at the grave for respect and say some nice words? War is never the right path to take! Is war the right path to take? Hey Mr. politician! How much money have you spent? In fact the United States has spent over 4.4 trillion dollars since 2001 or over ¼ of its yearly budget. Why not help the 36 million homeless in Bangladesh. Or help the people of The Democratic Republic of the Congo from poverty, or send water filters to Dharavi in India; due to the lack of quality of water – over 100,000 deaths of children per year. In return of helping these penurious, inconsolable and despair people; we shall have a world of smiles not sorrow ad selfishness. . In an ancient Chinese book called ‘The Art of War’ said: “the best victory is when the opponent surrenders of its own accord before there are any actual hostilities… It is best to win without fighting.” “There is no instance of a nation benefitting from prolonged warfare.” Today, we are all linked together in a world, and we Must work together at times to solve problems....

What Are the Causes of War According to Hidemi Suganami

...Hidemi Suganami recognized three focal causes of war: chance occurrences, war conduced mechanisms and key actions and inactions that were significant in bringing about conflict in August 1914. The three identified points fall into the category of “things that have happened” or “things that have been done” (Suganami, 2012, p. 194). The state system would be encompassed by key actions and inactions- agency- as both things that have happened and things that have been done. Firstly, key actions and inactions, can be described as the decision to act or not act in regards to impending war, as war usually necessitates one party to make the decision to enforce the “choice of war or immediate surrender” against another, and the second party to engage in war or not to surrender demurely (Suganami, 2012, p. 197). Ways in which the state system is exemplified under the first kind of case can be illustrated by the alliance system and arms race; as well as seeking to gain protection through increasing the size of their armies, European countries also sought protection by forming “alliance against common undemocratic enemies” (Suganami, 2012, p. 193). The dual alliance between Germany and Austria-hungary, which became the Triple Alliance or the Central Powers when Italy joined in 1882 led to France, Russia and Great Britain becoming alarmed enough to form their own Triple Entente (Peaple, 2002, p. 49-50). The military plans each country then went on to devise, and the arms race, were......

Lovely Bones Analysis

...HUMALIT A52 Miss Jo Almanzor Llamado, Alexandra E. Reflective paper on The Lovely Bones The first binary opposition I’ve identified in the movie is basically the idea of life and death. Obviously, we know that these will never meet. But in the story, there was actually an existing gray area between these two. Susie wasn’t gone neither frozen. She was alive. Just when we thought that these ideas will never meet. Susie was still “living” in her own perfect world. The second binary opposition I’ve identified is the concept of denial and acceptance. These are the things Susie’s parents were actually doing. Her dad, Jack, wasn’t ready yet to let go of Susie. He wanted to either kill or hurt the murderer for killing his daughter. He wouldn’t stop solving the mystery, but this is not the case for his wife. All she knows is that their daughter is already dead, and she just wants him to end whatever he was doing. Denial and acceptance are two different ideas but Susie’s parents were in these states because of the love for their daughter. The third binary opposition I’ve identified is reality and fantasy. Susie’s was living in reality. She’s somehow “in love.” She was able to experience the feeling of a first kiss, and also got pregnant at the end. These are things Susie wouldn’t experience anymore. All she can do is be happy for her sister. Susie was somehow able to experience being kissed by the guy she likes, but still through a different......

The Lovely Bones

...The Lovely Bones Review I'm the type of person that will pick up a book and read it until completion if I enjoy the book. There is nothing worse than purchasing a book because it received great reviews and your find yourself disappointed. The Lovely Bones was a bitter disappointment, no disrespect to Alice Sebold but I found myself bored and struggling to complete this novel. When I purchased The Lovely Bones at Borders, I asked the store clerk what she thought of the book. Not that it matters what she thinks but I have received some excellent recommendations on authors and books because of them. The clerk's response to me was "it was a waste of time". I honestly didn't know how to take that comment. We have our likes and dislikes when it comes to reading. I originally thought her response derived from this novel not being a happy one. The emotions you feel while reading this novel leaves you sad and grateful to have your children alive. However, I do understand what the clerk meant but I do not agree with her. Let me clarify, the first eighty or so pages engulfed me and I was very much into The Lovely Bones. The way Alice described Susie's heaven blew me away, I could see what she was describing. I was dreading reading about Susie’s demise but Alice handled this sensitive subject rather tactful in my opinion. I could feel and see what Alice was writing when it came to her characters but as the book continued onto how her family coped with the loss of their family......
