The boy lay on the sidewalk bleeding in the rain. He was sixteen years old, and he wore a bright purple jacket, and the lettering across the back of the jacket read THE ROYALS. The boy's name was Andy and the name was delicately scripted in black thread on the front of the jacket, just over the heart. ANDY..

He had been stabbed ten minutes ago. The knife entered just below his rib cage and had been drawn across his body violently, tearing a wide gap in his flesh. He lay on the sidewalk with the March rain drilling his jacket and drilling his body and washing away the blood that poured from his open wound. He had known excruciating pain when the knife had torn across his body, and then sudden comparative relief when the blade was pulled away. He had heard the voice saying, 'That's for you Royal! " and then the sound of footsteps hurrying into the rain, and then he had fallen to the sidewalk, clutching his stomach, trying to stop the flow of blood.

He tried to yell for help, but he had no voice. He did not know why his voice had deserted him, or why there was an open hole in his body from which his life ran readily, steadily, or why the rain had become so suddenly fierce. It was 11:13 p.m. but he did not know the time.

There was another thing he did not know.

He did not know he was dying. He lay on the sidewalk, bleeding, and he thought only: That was a fierce rumble. They got me good that time, but he did not know he was dying. He would have been frightened had he known. In his ignorance he lay bleeding and wishing he could cry out for help, but there was no voice in his throat. There was only the bubbling of blood from between his lips whenever he opened his mouth to speak. He lay in his pain, waiting, waiting for someone to find him.

He could hear the sound of automobile tires hushed on the rain swept streets, far away at the other end of the long…...

The Sidewalk That Held Diamonds

...The sidewalk that held diamonds I was 15 years old. I was in my room, playing one of my favorite games on Xbox. I was so entranced in this game that I didn’t quite notice the panicking voice that started coming out of my parent’s room. I just kept on playing thinking it was a work related issue. Then suddenly in the deep space of silence that was created in my mind by the rapture of the game, I heard the screaming voice of my mother that was at a pitch so high that it took me out of the game’s entrancement, and I just stood still. The screaming sound was one filled with pain, sadness and disappointment, all of those emotions projected in one sound. I stood still, with the remote still in my hands but not playing anymore, I was gathering up my thoughts. Then I stood up and started walking trough the straight corridor to my parent’s room. The closer I got the louder my mother’s cry was, and then I could see her with her hands cupped around her face crying. In that instant of time a cutting pain hit my heart and I knew without a doubt in my mind the reason why my mother was crying. I ran towards her and wrapped my arms around her. As I stood there hugging my mother every emotion that was projected by my mother’s scream rushed in to me. It was an uncontrollable wave hitting me and then surrounding me with the infinite matter of water which sole purpose was to drown me. A few days have gone by and here I was now standing in a graveyard surrounded by my family everyone dressed in...

Once the Bleeding Begins

..."Once the Bleeding Begins, the Healing Can Begin"-Tori Amos www.welcometobarboados.com Oppression is defined as the use of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel and unjust manner. When someone is physically and/or mentally oppressed for having a belief or belonging to an individual group, it can be individually demoralizing and degenerizing. Unfortunatly, The human race has been known to enforce their ability to oppress people through many avenues such as an individual belief in religion, a physical handicap or the way an individual may dress. However, for this essay, I have looked closely at specific females that were oppressed through unequality in specific to their individual race, social heirarchy of power, and sexuality. Unequality between male and female has been seen all over the United States. For example, American females finally were given the right to vote in 1920. In a racial sense, whether male or female, black and white people were segregated in public up until the 1950s. Financial status determined your ranking on the social hierarchy of power granting an individual the ability to have a great influence or to f. dFinancial status was signifigant; higher amounts of incomes meant one had a strong influence in society and respect was demanded. All of which were based on the norms of the time. Currently The United States of America does enforce laws that restrict physical harm onto others and enacted an equal opportunity act, thus enabling all Americans......

...I was conscious the whole time while inside the car. I was really scared and worried. All I could say was “Oh my god!“ I felt something else hit my car while it was spinning. It was the other car that it hit. As a result Mario’s car got inside the patio of the corner house. My car stopped in front of a palm tree.  When the car came to a complete stop the driver’s and passenger’s airbag popped out. I saw white smoke coming out of the motor of the car. I thought. “I have to get out the car is going to go on fire.” I tried opening the door but was unsuccessful. Then I looked at my hands and saw that my fingers had cuts on them that were bleeding. A good Samaritan called Robert helped me out of the car by forcing the door open. I sat on the sidewalk crying. I was in so much pain. The ambulance came within 3 minutes of me sitting on the sidewalk. I called Maikel to let him know what had happened to me. When Maikel arrived he called my family. I looked back at Mario and his friend Jon and they had paper towels on their heads, indicating head injuries. I was taken to the nearest hospital just seconds away. When I got to the hospital the doctors ran several test and exams. My family informed me that Mario and his friend were seen with bandages on their heads. Mario and Jon also had policemen next to them. I received 5 stiches on my left middle finger on the joint. About 3 months passed by and I started getting back pain. My general doctor Dr. Molina said “I’m going to give you a......

A Universe Lies on the Sidewalks of New York- by Steven Doloff

...A Universe Lies on the Sidewalks of New York- by Steven Doloff In this essay, Steven Doloff talks about the items he finds on the various sidewalks of New York and the people who leave these items. He starts by giving examples of the dozens of gun bullets and bullet shells he picked up from the sidewalks in his neighborhood. He says how in a decade, he has collected “mashed 0.45 caliber slugs, little 0.25 caliber shells, and an inch- long snub-nosed other things that could smack a refrigerator” and with every object he picks up, he wonders how such objects get onto the sidewalks and whether they are from a policeman’s gun or from some evil criminal. He says that whenever he looks down while walking on the sidewalks, he finds it full of newspaper sheets. Few years ago, he noticed cocaine powder on his neighbor’s sidewalk almost everyday. He also finds a crumpled hundred dollar bill and numerous pennies which to most people, seem worthless. But to him the shiny pennies had value because he notices and respects the little things in life. The thing the writer mainly talks and focusses on in this essay, are the gum spots which are found everywhere- at subway platforms, sidewalks, phone booths, bus stops, litter baskets and building entrances. He tells us how these spots range from small to big (“nickels to drink coasters”) and how these do not fade away and scrape off. He compares the stars of Manhattan to these gum spots saying that stars may not be visible in Manhattan but......

Medicine Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (Anca) Associated Granulomatous Vasculitis Presenting as Post-Menopausal Bleeding and Abnormal Cervix – a Case Study and Literature Review.

...presenting as post-menopausal bleeding and abnormal cervix – a case study and literature review. Royal Preston Hospital UK Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) associated granulomatous vasculitis, previously known as Wegener’s granulomatosis, is a rare multi-organ autoimmune necrotising vasculitis of unknown aetiology. It is characterised by granulomatous inflammation, vasculitis of small-to-medium vessels and elevated cytoplasmic ANCA. It most commonly affects the upper respiratory tract, lungs and kidneys. Its involvement with the cervix is extremely rare; to date there have been only been five published cases in the literature. In this case we present a 66 year old female with ANCA associated granulomatous vasculitis of the cervix. This patient initially presented in 2006 with upper respiratory tract symptoms, fever and renal failure. A renal biopsy later confirmed the diagnosis of ANCA-associated granulomatous vasculitis. The patient was managed with prednisolone and cyclophosphamide, later changing to azothiaprine. The patient remained in remission for six years. She presented in 2012 to her GP with a 12-month history of minimal vaginal bleeding and thrush. No relapse of her previous vasculitis symptoms was suspected. The patient was seen in a gynaecology clinic where speculum exam revealed an irregular appearance of the cervix; this was viewed in the colposcopy clinic demonsrating an irregular ‘suspicious’ cervix with contact bleeding. Cervical......

Short Text Essay

...Describe and explain an idea that was worth learning about in the texts An idea that was really worth learning about in the short stories, ‘On the Sidewalk Bleeding’ by Evan Hunter and ‘The Sniper’ by Liam O’Flaherty, was about making choices and having to face the consequences for them. This idea was worth learning about as we face the consequences we realize if the choice we made was good or bad and it helps us to learn how to think before we act. The idea of choices in ‘On the Sidewalk Bleeding’ is shown first by Andy’s choice of joining a gang. ‘That was when he’d first joined the Royals… He was a Royal. There had been meaning to the title.’ He joined because he thought he would find an identity, he would be known as somebody – a Royal. But he realizes too late that it was that name that killed him. Andy wonders if the Guardian had only stabbed the jacket, not him as an individual. ‘Had they known that he was Andy or had they dimply known he was a Royal wearing a purple silk jacket?’ The young couple, Freddie and Angela, who came by Andy, had to choose between helping Andy and not being found out by the Guardians. ‘We help him, and the Guardians will be down on our necks.’ In the end Freddie gets overcome by fear, and doesn’t want to face the consequences of getting mixed up in gang fights, so he leaves. Andy was similar to teenagers today in wanting to be part of the biggest, most popular groups. This teaches me that it is not always the best choice and could end in......

Where the Sidewalk Ends

...James Ross Robinson 10/13/2014 English 102 Mrs. Windsor Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein Where the Sidewalk Ends is a poem wrote by poet and musician Shel Silverstein. Silverstein was born in September, 1930 in Chicago. At the age of 20 he enlisted in the United States Army serving in both Korea and Japan. During his time in service he wrote cartoons for the famous Stars and Stripes magazine. It wasn’t until the late 1950’s to mid 1970’s when Silverstein gained national recognition for his cartoons in Playboy magazine. In 1963 Silverstein teamed up with Ursula Nordstrom a book editor who persuaded him to start writing material for children. As the 1960’s ended and the 70’s began Silverstein composed songs such as “A Boy Named Sue” made popular by the famous musician Johnny Cash. Although he had a very successful career doing other things it was his poems written in both 1974 and 1976, Where the Sidewalk Ends and The Missing Piece making him a famous children’s author. In 1999 after a long and successful career Shel Silverstein passed away at the age of 69 in Key West, Florida. Where the Sidewalk Ends was wrote telling us to allow our past to be left behind and move into the future. As adults we forget how to be free spirited and full of optimism. I myself often wish things in life could have been different, for instance obtaining a college degree right after high school. Our lives are often stressful, we can have good days and bad ones. Silverstein uses...

Critical Thinking

...Critical thinking Sally brown arrives with her sister. Carl ushers them both into the office. Whatever you say here is confidential, says Carl. So what happened? Well, we were looking at the Christmas decorations at Elmont’s department store, and my husband said he wanted to go on ahead and wait for us. Then the next thing we knew there was horn blowing, brakes screeching, and a thud. We turned around and there he was lying in the street, bleeding. Sally begins crying and Carl gives her a tissue. So did either of you see the accident. Well not really says the sister. We were looking at the Christmas decorations. If you didn’t see the accident, says Carl, we may not be able to win the case. Somebody needs to be able to say that they saw the accident and that your husband didn’t just step out in front of the car. Its better if the car got him while he was on the sidewalk. Are you sure you didn’t see anything at all. Well says sally. Maybe we did you know ere locking at the decorations but we might have looked around to say goodbye. We might’ve seen him then. Good says Carl writing this down. Now is it might have or can you be more certain did you see the accident. Yes says sally looking at her sister. I think we did see it. I mean what else could have happened. Carl takes further information. Sally stands up to leave....

...golf association, senior couple’s golf association, a swim team, and a tennis association (Lake Forest Property Owner’s Association, 2014). Lake Forest houses a variety of different things to accommodate the majority of its residents, however, it is missing one obvious thing: a sidewalk. The Lake Forest Subdivision needs a sidewalk in its community to not only help to eliminate safety issues, increase physical activity, and to aid in reducing health issues, but to also connect its residents to the different amenities and also to one another. Reducing different safety issues on the roads in Lake Forest could be accomplished by adding a sidewalk throughout its community. Contrary to many residents’ beliefs, having a sidewalk can help to reduce crime within a neighborhood by yielding more “eyes on the streets” (Federal Highway Administration Safety, 2014). If a criminal commits a crime, there is a high chance that he will be seen. No criminal wants to be caught in the act. According to Moeur (2012) a criminal is deterred by the presence of sidewalks. Sidewalks also provide a way to separate the pedestrians from vehicle traffic (Safety benefits of walkways, sidewalks, and paved shoulders, 2010). Sidewalks give pedestrians a designated path. When they have a designated path, it is highly likely that this will keep them out of the streets when walking, jogging or riding their bikes. According to Larry, (n.d.) more than 75,000 Americans have been killed over the past 15 years in......

Refugee Essay

...The Refugee Crisis Essay The meaning of the phrase ´´refugee crisis´´ can be difficult to grasp until all photographs of dead toddlers, desperate families crowded at train stations and children sleeping on sidewalks are seen. Thousands of desperate people are daily fleeing from their home countries because of war, persecution and oppression. Many head for Europe which makes the crisis there grow bigger and appear more acute. The main cause of this crisis by far is the war in Syria as well as civil unrest in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. The refugee crisis is a bleeding wound that must be treated. However it´s easier said that done. The anti-refugee politics in western and several other wealthy countries have increased drastically. The wealthy countries that are best suited to taking in refugees are opposed to the idea and its effects. Several wealthy countries have discouraged refugees and actively worked to prevent them from reaching their shores. The attitude of such countries has contributed to the crisis growing out of control. However in order to solve the refugee crisis, all EU member states must take their fare share of responsibility! EU states must simply stop acting as if the refugee crisis on the Mediterranean is a sole responsibility of Europe´s littoral countries. If the refugee crisis was just a question of money it would probably have been easier to solve, but it is not. It´s rather a question of overcoming anti-refugee policies and right-wing......

Bleeding Help

...I saw a great bad thing-the branches were bleeding! "So the place was good here," I shouted. "We will build our town!" We will sail toward Creta the old homeland from where the old Trojans moved toward Asia. Aeneas was telling of the Trojan escape away from Asia toward Thrace Anchises called together the Trojans: "We will not stay here" The gods are calling the Trojans toward Creta. There we will build our town. At that place there was also miserable Polydorus's ghost. He told the miserable story with few words. And so the captains were steering the ships away from Thrace and toward Creta. And so Polydorus, Priam's son, had sailed before the war to here with much gold. For my son will keep the gold safe Now we were in Thrace to where we had sailed away from Asia Priam had entrusted Polydorus to the Lord of Thrace with good words The accursed Lord of Thrace had killed Polydorus and had even seized the gold. But, when I had walked into the thicket from where we were carrying the branches toward the alter... If the wild Greeks will have seized Troy they will not also seize the gold For a long time the Lord of Thrace was being the ally of the people of Troy but there was a friendship among the nations We Trojans had fought beautifully with the Greeks; however the Greek overcame the Trojans The Trojans were carrying the sacred gifts to the gods and so I was......

Connections Essay

...people around them. Because of this writers feel that they need to convey the importance of finding one’s own identity then taking the time to learn and respect other people’s identity. Then also how dangerous it can be if we let stereotyping cloud our judgements on ourselves and those around us. Some example of texts where writers that explore this theme are, the poem “Bred in South Auckland” by Glen Colquhoun, the poem “Search for my Tongue” by Sujata Bhatt, the short story ‘’On the Sidewalk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter and the short story “After you my Dear Alphonse” by Shirley Jackson. These four texts can be separated into two groups. The first group is the way that stereotyping can affect people’s view on their own search for identity in both positive and negative ways. This would be the poems, “Bred in South Auckland “and “Search for my Tongue”. The Second group is the way that stereotyping can affect people’s view on others identity which would be the short stories, “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” and “After you my Dear Alphonse”. The idea of stereotyping affecting the search for identity in ourselves is seen in the poem “Bred in South Auckland”. This is an open and proud poem about a young man who lives in South Auckland and is a mixture of the races Chinese, Pakeha, Maori and Pacific Islander. In the poem he recognises the way people stereotype him into those races. However, this is all written in a positive way and he celebrates the fact that he is mixed raced. He says......

Gastrointestinal Bleeding

...factors increase this patient’s risk for GI bleed? According to Sole, Klein, and Moseley (2013), the factors that increase this patient’s risk for GI bleed are alcoholism, smoking, excessively use of NSAIDs, and infection of helicobacter pylori. 2. What are the differences between an upper and lower GI bleed? There are many differences between an upper GI and lower GI bleed including causes and physical presentation. For upper GI bleeding, the causes are a duodenal and gastric ulcer, gastric varices, and Mallory-Weiss tear (Sole, Klein, & Moseley, 2013). The causes of lower GI bleeding include cancer, hemorrhoids, polyps, an inflammatory disorder, diverticulosis, and vascular ectasias (Sole, Klein, & Moseley, 2013). The significant sign and symptom that differentiate between upper and lower GI bleeding are the color of the blood. In upper GI bleeding, the blood appears dark and coffee grounds which called hematemesis. In the opposite, the lower GI bleeding has the bright red blood appearance. Other signs and symptoms of upper GI bleeding include hypovolemic shock, discomfort of the abdominal, and black-foul stool which called melena (Sole, Klein, & Moseley, 2013). 3. How are these conditions diagnosed? The diagnostic tests include CBC, serum electrolyte, hematology, ABGs, and gastric aspirate (Sole, Klein, & Moseley, 2013).
