Bill Bailey, Chairman of the Board of Utah Opera, is cognizant of the benefits that can be reaped should a merger form between UOC and the Utah Symphony. One of his tasks is to share his view point by motivating potential supporters to become proponents of the merger. He himself is motivated by this potential merger due to the financial hardships the arts’ field in general is enduring. He understands that they merger most likely will result in profit and long term growth/stability.
Whilst Bill Bailey is an advocate of the merger he is aware of potential risks. Utah opera organization is healthy financially however its continued solvency is in question due to a decline in general support of the arts that not only effects his organization, but arts organizations throughout the country.
In order to convince people to support this merger Bill Bailey could subscribe to Victor Vrooms Expectancy theory of motivation. This theory concentrates mostly on a persons’ desirability of a certain outcome. It theorizes that people generally act in a certain way because they are motivated to achieve a specific result. Their behavior and acts have direct causes on outcomes (wanted or unwanted). Its about the mental processes that a person most likely will go through when they are making choices. Vroom put forth the following formula in regards to his theory
M = E*I*V (motivation = expectancy * instrumentality * valence)
M= The amount a person will be motivated by an outcome determined by a circumstance they are dealt.
E (expectancy)= a persons’ perception that a certain effort or behavior will result in performance
I (instrumentality) a persons’ perception that a performance will warrant punishment or an award
V (valence)= perceived value of the award that is coveted as a result of performance. If the reward is small then the motivation will not be as high, even if…...

Bill Bailey Bill Bailey’s position in the decision of whether or not the merger should happen is not simply a business decision. With these different aspects to be considered with the merger, utilizing Vroom’s Expectancy Theory will help to guide his very difficult decision. This theory offers a framework to utilize the director position as leader to influence others and persuade them to support the merger. First and foremost are the community objections to the merger. This is where both the opera and the symphony received the majority of their funding so it would have to be taken into account that the public was opposed mostly due to the fact that the opera and symphony were so different in nature and they were concerned that the two would be melted into one big pot instead of keeping their identities separate. The biggest reason for the supporter concerns with this melting possibility is that they want their donations to go to specific performances and if all the funds received all went to a big pot, their donations wouldn’t be reaching the programs they are donating to. Common inputs can include hard work, tolerance and enthusiasm and common outputs can be salary, benefits and recognition or rewards. The maintenance of this balance between inputs and outputs results in more productive, efficient and content workforce. A good way to look at this is that a worker will feel equal if he or she perceives that the reward received for their hard work is the same as that of an employee of the same level. If the reward received by the second employee ends up being greater or if the second employee receives the same reward for less work, the first employee may feel neglected and may even become less productive to match the second employee’s performance level.
