Patrick Henry

...In the late 1700´s Patrick Henry delivered a speech called ¨Give Liberty Or Give Death¨ in Virginia in which he asked to fight back against Britain that had been defecting on promises of helping their citizens with all their needs for a long time. Henry was able to persuade the men around him to believe that the United States’ liberty was a cause worth fighting for. Throughout his speech, he appealed to the emotions of his audience giving it some diction and allusions. Henry used a lot of emotional appeals through diction during his speech in order to persuade more and more his audience. At the beginning of his speech, he captured the attention of the people in the convention by saying “Should I keep back my opinions at such a time through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country’’ (line 15). This authorative tone made the audience fearful and anxious about what he was going to say. The emotional appeals in this speech are also formed with the use of figurative language which made his diction different from the usual. The audience can see this when he said, “We must fight! I repeat it sir, we must fight!”. His use of repetition and hyperbole emphasized that no matter what they will fight and they should be prepared. Also Henry took advantage of the feelings of his audience by using rhetorical questions, for example, in line 23 he asked that if the citizens should act like those who have eyes and don’t see, have ears......

Rossum V. Patrick

...Rossum v. Patrick 659 F.3d 722 C.A.9 (Cal.), 2011. September 13, 2011 Taylor Ruotsala Criminology 105, Section 01 Professor Weitz April 22, 2012 Rossum v. Patrick Introduction In California, the state supreme court, intermediate courts of appeal and superior courts all have original habeas corpus jurisdiction (Cal. Const. art. VI, § 10. ) Habeas corpus has been an influence within legal matters since 1305 in England. It is translated to mean, “you have the body.” In many Supreme Courts all over the United States, there were different rulings that involved habeas corpus. So much that it became a statute in the Constitution, 28 USC § 2241, the Power to grant writ. This statute expresses the power and limitations that are given to Congress. In Article 1 section 9, the limitations of Congress are expressed: “the Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it” (Cornell). Many defendants argue that their counsel has not represented them fair enough to the jury, which would fail to determine the most just and righteous decision by the jury. Therefore, they file a habeas corpus petition. “The writ of habeas corpus serves as an important check on the manner in which state courts pay respect to federal constitutional rights” (Lectric Law). The writ checks the authority of the court system and the elasticity of their powers. In Rose v. Lundy, 455 U.S. 509, 520 (1982), it......

Women Are Beautiful

...Women are beautiful By Maria Batrakova Group 21 D Free and beautiful, that was how one of the greatest innovators of photography, Garry Winogrand, pictured women. (Here you can see a photo of him: http://imgur.com/AjnXCe6) Due to Art Blart (Art Blart, 2011) he was considered as one of the most distinguished photographers of the twenties-century in America. Winogrand's amazing exhibition includes 85 spontaneous photographs taken between 1960 and 1975 in and around New-York city. (Series of his photographs provided with the following links: http://imgur.com/jNApIzk, http://imgur.com/fY51U1d, http://imgur.com/aTd0ImL, http://imgur.com/R1Jd7J7, http://imgur.com/K1cJdwO, http://imgur.com/MNQWicg) During the 60's the attitude to women totally changed. Inner and outer freedom were explicit, in some ways, sexually explicit. “Prince of the streets” depicted this social transformation better that someone else. Lola Garrido called famous photographer “the maestro of the moment”: “In short, Winogrand catches with his camera every detail by composing and giving natural meaning to the representation.” (Garrido, 2014). But the gifted photograther found the way in which beautiful creatures express their sexuality through their gestures, hairstyles, clothes and some other interesting features, he avoided naked pictures. Richard Woodward writes in his article the following: “Winogrand didn't dress these women in tight sweaters or pant suits, or apply their hair and make-up. Their......

The Beautiful Ocean

...The Beautiful Ocean The above-sea world has many wonderful and beautiful sights. As air-breathing, land dwellers, we can look up during the day and see the enormous bright blue sky with puffs of clouds that look like cotton candy, stars that flicker like little candles at night, and strong, tall oaks that look like skyscrapers. Being above water has many beautiful sights to offer but just where those beauties end another world with its own beauties begins. Scuba diving at a spot near my uncle’s house in Key West takes me to a whole new world. My uncle’s small beach house in Key West is one of my favorite places to visit. His beach house is a sea weed green color, and he hangs old bobbers and fishing poles, decomposing nets, and old brittle fish bones from its green walls. The water in Key West is a vivid turquoise blue that looks like a boat full of paint has spilled in it, and the beaches are as white as powdered sugar. My favorite spot to scuba dive is about a ten-minute boat ride off the coast of Key West. My uncle’s boat takes us out into the deep blue water. It is an old and noisy fishing boat that has traveled around the Florida Keys many times. Hearing the roar of its tired engine, smelling the salt water, and feeling the mist hitting my face from the splashing waves gets me ready to dive in the bright blue abyss. Getting scuba gear on takes a few minutes of tightening many straps and pulling zippers, but when finished, it feels like an extra layer of......

Life Is Beautiful

...Films such as Schindler’s List and The Pianist take a serious historical approach to the Holocaust, while films like Life is Beautiful take a different approach to it. It is the combination of romance, comedy, and tragedy that triggered many viewers into criticizing Life is beautiful as being oblivious to the Holocaust’s reality, therefore making it inappropriate. However, A filmmaker is not a historian, and is not responsible for Depicting the holocaust as accurate as possible, the film does in fact present the dichotomy of life before and after the holocaust, without leaving out the fact that thousands of people were murdered and battered in the duration of the holocaust. it is the honest presentation of human relations, the main focus between the love of a father and son and the artistic form presented in the film that make the film appropriate. It’s appropriate because filmamkers who portray the holocaust are not obligated to depict the horrors of the events. Holocaust filmmakers are not necessaraly historians who seek to portray historic events as they actually happen. It IS appropriate because the film presents, the dicotamy of Life before the holocaust and after. It is apporpiate becausebinigni was never oblivious to the holocaust in his film, because there are scenes that actually show the raw heartlessness of the holocaust. “Life is Beautiful” is a movie about the holocaust famous for the perspective the director chose to portray it. The movie isn’t about......

Beautiful Observations

...Beautiful Observations There are many objects we look at every day, but have you ever stopped to really look at the meaning behind these objects? Recently, I did just that. There is a shadowbox picture that hangs in my sisters bedroom that I covet. I say covet because my mother gave it to my sister Tracy on her 21st birthday and I was jealous. Why not me, I thought. Inside its beautifully carved wooden protected home is several gorgeous details that captured my attention and made me wish I was the possessor of this breathtaking collage. Before I talk about the inside, I would like to talk about the carved frame. I enjoy touching it with my hands because of the beautiful carvings etched into the wood. It makes me think about a bible because it has thick edges. On these edges, there are indentions that make me think of little angel wings. If that isn’t stunning enough, let me tell you about the inside. There is a glass case inside the wood. On the inside of the glass is a big bronze heart that is shaped perfectly and has a rose running through it. Beneath the heart is an inscribed poem entitled “Daughter”. It’s a beautiful poem. The poem is written in calligraphy and it explains how a daughter is kind, loving and delicate like a rose. It also speaks on how a daughter is remarkable, beautiful inside, always thoughtful and considerate. You can look at this frame and tell it wasn’t the most expensive frame, but its beauty and meaning makes it seem like it cost a million...

Beautiful Day

...One beautiful day in fourteen twenty nine it all began, We wondered whether we'd make it, but alas, Allah's command. Starting with Kitaabs so little and new, Das Sabaq, Nahwa, and Sarf-just to mention a few. Through laughter and tears, we learned more about each other, Six years together helped us to know one another. We toiled through year by year growing in our 'Ilm as well, A tear drops mercilessly when upon it I dwell. Each one of you has taught me something different, In your special and unique ways, you’ve all made a difference. So small and young we seemed on the very first day, So distant the memory, it feels like just yesterday. Spending much time with my sisters twenty seven, May we be reunited forever more in Heaven. I ask each of you to forgive me for every time I hurt you, The times I lied to you, spoke ill of you, or upset you too. For the times you gave me a shoulder to cry on, a hug, and reasons to laugh and smile, For those times and more thank you, and continue to remember me once in a while. In your humble prayers, forget not the sister you once knew, And may the Angels answer your Duas with "Wa laka mithluhu." May today's completion of Bukhaari mark the end of a beautiful journey, But let it not end our love for our Kitaabs for the path ahead is thorny. May we be the Ulemaa' our Asaatidha worked hard for us to be, May we be ambassadors and spread Allah's word as His decree. I pray this isn't the end but we'll meet someday again, ...

Beautiful

...Beautiful By Siddiqah Cooper-Famakin I use to once sit and wonder what true beauty was; I would notice the outward neatness and great appearance of others and think that “this is what it is.” Not realizing that the same way they put on, they could also take off. It wasn’t until I began to grow and allow myself to be expanded that I realized true beauty must first begin within. I began to be able to experience true beauty by allowing love to come in; Love came in and saturated my heart and taught me to first love myself. After learning to love myself, I could then display love of immeasurable amounts towards God. When displaying love towards God, I love on His people. I began to love on the people of God by becoming sensitive to their needs; whether, Spiritual, financial, or physical. True beauty stepped in. I realized that it was not what was on the outside, but what was on the inside of MY heart. After God saw and noticed me operating in MY true beauty, He blessed me with a love that He knew would love me with the same kind of love that I put out. God blessed me with you, Olajireh Festus Famakin. I am truly grateful unto the Lord Jesus for you. You have come into my life and helped me to fully define true beauty. The beauty of you and me walking in the Garden of Eden with our Lord Jesus; I couldn’t ask for or imagine more. Knowing that we were created to be together as one, gives the heart something that it has been longing to adore. Olajireh, I......

St Patricks Day

...annually on 17 March to mark the death date of the most commonly recognized patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. It is also a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador. Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with establishing 300 churches in Ireland and of having converted most of the population to Christianity. Patrick was born in Great Britain to a wealthy Alderman and Christian. At 16 Patrick was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. During his captivity as a shepherd, he dedicated himself to his religion. He managed to escape captivity six years, later. Returning to England he believed it was his responsibility to bring Christianity to the Irish. St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in America in 1737, organized by the Irish Society of Boston, including a feast and religious service. This first celebration of the holiday in the colonies was largely to honour and celebrate the Irish culture that so many colonists had been separated from. St. Patrick's Day parades started in New York in 1762 by a group of Irish soldiers in the British military who marched down Broadway. This began the tradition of a military theme in the parade. Parades and wearing green have always been a traditional part of St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Believe it or not, the color of St. Patrick was not actually green, but blue! In the 19th century, however, green became used as a symbol......

A Beautiful Mind

...A Beautiful Mind John Nash- A brilliant mathematician, John’s troubles begin during his time at Princeton. He begins to hallucinate, consistently carrying on conversations and relationships with people who never existed. To make matters worse, he is already anti-social, and has a tendency to isolate and bury himself in work. As time passes, his condition worsens. He begins to believe that there is this elaborate scheme against him; he believes he is being forced to work for the government to decipher codes. That they inserted a coded chip in order to keep track of him, and if he doesn’t comply with their wishes, they will expose him to the Russians, who in turn will kill him. This interferes with his personal and work life tremendously. Although he is able to carry on the basic everyday tasks such as taking care of personal hygiene and eating, he is not able to differentiate the real world from his imaginary world. Eventually, the situation gets to be so extreme that he is placed in a mental institution for a certain period of time, undergoing shock and insulin therapies in order to “treat” his condition. Professor Nash’s case is a very straightforward and meets the criteria for Paranoid Schizophrenia. To be clear Schizophrenia is not the same thing as multiple personality disorder, because Schizophrenics don’t have problems with a split personality but instead a split mind. Hence the Latin derivation “Schitz”Split and “phrenic” meaning mind. Mind in the sense of what is......

He says that God has given America what it needs to fight and that America will win if they use what they have been given. He says that America wants to believe that everything is fine. 4. What is Henry implying when he says that he is loyal to "the majesty of heaven...above all earthly kings"? What tone (manner in which an author expresses his attitude) does this statement hold? This means that he is loyal to God over anyone else. His tone is humble and respectful. 5. Why are Henry's final words so effective and memorable? Those words have been used several times over the years and have become a symbol of our country. To die instead of having freedom is a very powerful notion. 6. A rhetorical question is a question posed to emphasize a point, not for the purpose of getting an answer. Henry uses this device extensively throughout his speech. Find one example in the speech, quote it and explain what point he is emphasizing with those......
