Poetic Justice
“Poetic Justice” is a short story written by Diana Appleyard, the short story was published in 2004. The short story is about a woman, who was invited to her class reunion, she starts to think of her old boyfriend Jed Cunningham, the thought of him made her think back at the time that they had together. “His name burnt its way into her soul.” (p.1. l.5)
Jed Cunningham was the coolest person in school, everybody looked up to him, and he even made his own style. “The coolest of the cool with the fashions everyone else followed, from scarved draped casually round his neck to the tie at half-mast, school trousers worn low on his hips.”(p.1 ll. 23-25) Jed Cunningham was that type of person that had all types of friends, for example in the text it says: “Who resolutely refused to be in with the in crowd, and gathered about him an eclectic group of friends from the deeply weird scientists nerd to the incredibly popular and handsome head boy, a dead ringer for Pierce Brosnan.” (p.1 ll.25-27) So Jed Cunningham could pretty much do whatever he wanted to do. Even the teachers were afraid of him because he if going is own way, and nothing was going to stop him. Now Jed Cunningham is extremely clever, and he knows what he is doing. But now he is alone and lives with his dog, and that is probably not the life he had expected.
The narrator is a “typical housewife” she lives in the country now with her two daughters and her husband. She has not really put any effort into her normal life with her husband, she does all of the standard thing that a mid-aged woman should do; like doing the laundry, picking her daughter up after school and so on. After she broke up with Jed, she missed all of the excitements she had for life, she lost the spark in her eyes, and she lost the most important thing; the ability to dream. ... I have read the short story Poetic Justice by Diana Appleyard. The story is told by a first person narrator, and describes an episode in a middle age woman’s life. A woman whose name is not revealed but who possibly could be the writer herself, because of the family issues described in the text which is similar to the actual Diana Appleyard. No matter the identity of the narrator the story presents the contrasts between those who is called ordinary people with ordinary lives and the ones who take risks, lives on the edge or as the story puts it “seize the day”.  In this case the ordinary people are symbolized by the narrator, who one day receives a mail from an old boyfriend which commences her on a journey to her past and makes her reconsider the choices she made along the way. As the story progress her current life is taking to debate on several angles. At one point you get the expression that she hates her life and deeply regrets how everything has turned out. She is unhappy, although it seems that she never thought of it until this moment. The moment where she suddenly wakes up and discovers a woman she does not know. A woman so different from everything she once was and everything she could have been. All of this is triggered by a simple email, therefore making it understandable why it makes her uneasy, and why she practically fears answering. ...Essay – Poetic Justice “Carpe diem” is a phrase that is often used by people who are not taking anything for granted. They are living their life exactly how they want to and they do not care about the following consequences. The story “Poetic Justice” is exactly about that – when to seize the day and when not to. Jed Cunningham is an absolute original. Jed has always been smarter than everybody else. In his younger years he stood apart and watched the world mockingly. He would always have the newest clothes only for others to envy. The fact that he was so different made his teachers uneasy. He did not do what they said and it caused the teachers to call Jed disrespectful. The truth was that they were afraid of him and his amazingly developed intelligence. “Who resolutely refused to be in with in the crowd, and gathered about him an eclectic group from deeply weird scientist to the incredibly popular and handsome head boy, a dead ringer for Pierce Brosnan” line 25-27. The quote shows how popular Jed really was. Not only for the popular teenager but also for the nerds. In terms of his popularity the sky was the limit. You can sort of compare Jed to a modern day “hipster”. Of course there had to be some consequences for his actions. Later on Jed’s life fell apart. He did not get a job, he had a wife but she left him. The story is about a woman who finds her ex-boyfriend, Jed Cunningham on the Friends Unite website. Then she tells us ''in her mind'' about their relationship in high school, how much she loved him, about Jed himself and about their break-up. She tells us how her life is boring, that her ''energy is gone'' after the break up, and how she had been depressed. When they broked up, he told her that he would never speak or contact her again, but suddenly he sends her an email after she finds him on the Friends Unite. Then they start to write to each other, asking how their lives are and etc. until Jed tells her that he ''drove his wife insane'' because she wasn't her - the narrator. She is shocked after she reads it. She always thought her life was boring, and all her energy and wildness was gone, that she is reserved. But she is shocked because she had always thought, that Jed's life was perfect, that he was over it and moved on a long time ago. She doesn't reply, but deletes the mail and it was gone into ''infinite cyberspace''. The story only evolves around two characters: the female narrator and Jed Cunningham. ...Poetic Justice More and more people want the easy life, a life with no problems and no limitations. People strive to be the next breakthrough, the next star. But is it worth the risk; is it worth gambling your life on? In the short story “Poetic Justice”, written by Diana Appleyard, Jed Cunningham takes the jump, leaving all opportunities of graduation behind, to be a free man, to be a poet. Jed Cunningham is a freedom fighter a man who does not want to be one of the regular guys, he wants to be free of expectations and live the life no one thought he would live. Jed was not a part of the flock, the herd, he separated himself from the rest. Jed was way ahead of his own age, he didn’t follow the trends, but rather made them, and he spoke wisely and read books of philosophic authors. His didn’t want reality, but fantasy, a life with no worries. Jed was a boy sure of his future he didn’t want to hang around and get a career and a stable normal life, what he wanted was freedom, just like most other poets he was a rebellion to the norm, to society. Jed was sure of his future and knew what he wanted to, he was so determined that he without a thought left his girlfriend, when she did not share the his beliefs. ...Aristotle’s Poetics Reflected In “The Lottery” And The Bourne Identity “The Lottery” reflects Aristotle’s Poetics in many ways, such as, the arrangement of incidents. In establishing the plot, Jackson lays out the tragedy clearly by first having the most eager group of the community, the children, gathering then followed by the other townsfolk. One action is as the children arrive they began to pile stones that we later discover to be most crucial in the ending action, the stoning of Tessie. Following are incidents setting the stage for the drawing itself as the box is placed on the stool and Mr. Graves assumes his usual spot and the families continue to gather. Aristotle describes the plot as a painting with beautiful colors, laid on confusedly. The readers are brought into “The Lottery” with some confusion. The scene opens pleasantly on the morning of June 27th a clear and sunny day with children playing in the square. Jackson cleverly lures the readers into a relaxed state before shocking them in the end with a stoning assumingly to death. As the chalk outline of the portrait is shown by Tessie’s character when she first arrives good-naturedly with good odds of surviving the day. Poetic Analysis

...Poetic perspectives on “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer” Reading the poem by John Keats, I was actually disappointed because I could not interpret the poem well enough to something bigger than Keats’ amazement to Chapman’s translations of Homer’s stories. Maybe due to my lack of expertise in poetry, I did not find it very amusing. It was quite easy to understand, but it did not seem as meaningful to me. In the opening lines, Keats speaks of his long endeavors and exciting journeys which were all very impressive and quite epic and adventurous. He speaks of having travelled to many different lands and even those which were sort of “properties” of very famous epic poets. By land, Keats probably means the land of literature because he comes off as a poet who is unimpressed by the works of other big poets or litterateurs who had claimed the world of literature as they were such talented writers. He even mentions that these “bards” have proven their loyalty to the “land” even over Apollo, who is the God of music, but Keats, remains not very amused. That was only until he heard Chapman speak out and express his version of the Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer and that is when Keats felt like he was swept away like an astronaut would be at the sight of a new planet, or like Cortez when he looked across from the pacific and spotted land. ...Jed Cunningham: Here you’ll find a characterization of Jed Cunningham, who is one of the main characters in this short story. Jed Cunningham is in his High School years defined as a tall blue eyed, broad shouldered, skinny guy, whose skin is pale. Jed’s hair is defined as thick black with a tuft at front and a mouth that curves into a sardonic smile. Later In life he describes himself as an old sad and grey haired man. ...Analysis and interpretation of “Poetic Justice” - 12 by The British short story “Poetic Justice” by Diana Appleyard concerns the choices we make in life and how these will affect us later on. At the same time, it is a story about dreams, disillusion, and facing reality.Throughout most of the story, a 3rd person narrator is used; it is seen from the narrator’s point of view with an internal focalization. However, this changes in the last two or three sentences, where,suddenly, a 1st person narrator is introduced. The actual setting of the story is the narrator’s house, most of the story actually takes place in cyberspace or in the narrator’s mind, when she is remembering past events. The story evolves around two characters; the unnamed female narrator and the long lost love of her youth, Jed Cunningham. They’re both middle aged and British, but that is about the only similarities between them.
