Writing 102 Portfolio Throughout this semester of Writing 102, I have been assigned to write four essays that have stressed the course competencies of subject matter knowledge, writing process knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, genre knowledge, discourse community knowledge, and meta-cognition. Through the process of drafting, editing, and revising three out of the four papers, I think I have been effectively able to absorb three of those course competencies; subject matter knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, and writing process knowledge.
The first paper I was assigned to write for Writing 102 was a literacy narrative. For this paper, I was told to write about a past experience that helped influence my current writing and reading qualities. The core competencies that were involved in this essay were writing process knowledge and subject matter knowledge. I used writing process knowledge when I was told to generate ideas for my essay. I began by thinking of five possible ideas and from there I created a brainstorming web out of the two topics I thought would be the most interesting. Shortly after starting, I realized I could only build an effective brainstorming web from one idea. I decided to use the first time I forgot my lines in a play as my main idea for the essay. After I completed the brainstorming web and finished taking notes on what I remembered from the incident I started to follow the writing process that consisted of prewriting, drafting, and revising. Subject matter knowledge, which was the other core competency, was used in this essay when I began the actual writing process. To prevent the reader from becoming bored and uninterested in the essay, I was told that the literacy narrative didn’t have to be entirely true. It is a statistical term that measures the amount of variability around an average mean price. Correlation measures the relationship between two variables. Coefficient of Correlation can range between -1 and +1 depending on the degree and direction of the relationship. Positive correlation denotes that both stocks will follow similar movement whereas negative correlation denotes the opposite relationship. Portfolio risk is used to measure risk when investing in more than one security, where it can be reduced but never eliminated. Method 1. I chose two companies from the FTSE 100: BP (Stock 1) and HSBC (Stock 2) keeping in mind the dependency between them. I made sure I used companies from different industries to minimize the unsystematic risk. 2. There are various examples given in which PPD1 could be improved, so it could be implemented in the next academic year. One suggestion is 1. A more broad idea of feedback on what the lecturer is looking for in the work assigned. a. This will enable students to know exactly what they are going to write or give them idea of how the lecturer wants the assignment to be handled. 2. Exam time-tables to be given way ahead of time b. This will also enable students to revise more thoroughly in preparation for the exam. Conclusion I have learnt a lot from writing up this portfolio. ...very biased. I believed that writers had to follow a certain format and stick to the textbook rules in order to succeed as a creative writer. This notion of mine was completely shattered, and for the good, once I was introduced to the fact that a creative writer is in essence not bound by any rules. Don’t get me wrong, there are certain rules, but these rules are nowhere nearly as strict as the rules I experienced during my stint with formal literary writing. More than the rules, I uncovered several tools that would aid my writing process in the future. Experimenting with the five elements of creative writing - Image, Voice, Character, Setting and Story provided me with a firm fundamental understanding as to how I should begin crafting my portfolio. It was very interesting to discover how each of these elements worked independently as well as coherently within each of the four genres to provide a well rounded work of literature. Among the four genres, I was most comfortable with writing the Drama. Integrating all the necessary elements of creative writing into the drama came naturally to me as I could visualize the drama actually taking place on stage. The fact that all of my characters’ thoughts had to be externalized as opposed to fiction where I could go into my characters’ thoughts and not worry about the reader’s reaction proved to be an exciting challenge.
