Findings And Discussions
Printing press has allowed information to be spread quickly and accurately.
This was particularly useful for communication between scientists, and it also gave authors more prominence and boosted literacy rates by making the printed word ubiquitous. That’s why, even as the printing press gives way to new technologies, its impact on society can’t be ignored.
Printing is not something one may think of often, but it does impact our lives everyday. From the morning newspaper to church on Sundays, printing is important to our society.
Without printing we wouldnt have books, papers, magazines or many other information tools. To truly understand printing one must look at the machines, processes and technology that has shaped its history.
Technology has impacted every industry, but perhaps has really improved the printing industry.
The introduction of computers make setting up type and tone much easier. Laser printing and digital printing have sent the process to new heights, allowing printers to do more than ever. High definition abilities make todays printed material of the highest quality ever seen.
With the combination of new advances in machinery, processes and technology the printing industry has grown and changed. It is an important part of daily life and with its evolution through history has become even better.
As art is said to be a mirror of mood, so are the values of the time reflected in art of an era.
The dynamics of the printing have changed dramatically with increased competition from alternative communication media. Print still has a strong role to play far into the future. The challenge as an industry is to educate marketing professionals on the most effective means for integrating multiple media — including print — into a multichannel business communications strategy. The most effective…...

...The Printing Press Introduction: The Advancement The advancement in question is the printing press, a technological innovation that profoundly altered human culture. It may be argued, in fact, that this advancement revolutionized humanity and society in a manner rivaled only by the modern advent of the Internet. Moreover, as will be discussed, these were impacts with both varied and far-reaching consequences: “Paper and printing paved the way for religious reformation and made possible popular education” (Thompson, 1978, p. 167). It is then all the more astonishing that such consequences could arise from so simple a mechanism, or that its development would be realized as late as the 15th century. What is generally considered the original version of the modern printing press is a machine consisting of several key components. A long wooden table provides the surface for setting out the paper and ink, and these are then placed under the upright frame of the press itself. Before this step, however, every stage requires exacting work. First, the type is needed, which are metal blocks with raised letters, numbers, and punctuation marks on one end. This type is then arranged to spell out the document, smeared with ink, and lowered by the frame onto the paper by means of a large and adjustable screw, supported by a cross beam (Hook, 2009, p. 46). The press is, again, hardly an impressive-looking feat of engineering. Essentially, it......

...Flexographic Prints Flexography is generally known as ‘anline’ printing, it is a method which allows ink printing on several surfaces quickly and efficiently. This printing is seen in ranges of applications, for instance food packing industry and colored plastic bags. It is leading other types of printing like screen printing, because flexography allows faster and larger volume printed goods. At large scale production, flexography allows higher level of automation and minimal operator influence during printing which help producing at economical costs. Figure 1 is graphical representation of flexographic printing. Basically, it transfer liquid ink on the raised surface of photopolymer printing plate which contains the image which is to be printed, then it is transferred on the substrate for creating reproduction of the image. The circumference of the cylinder is enveloped with the printing plate with the help of double sided tape, it allows nonstop printing without resetting the machine after every print cycle. Flexography is a simple method. It starts with collecting maximum liter of ink in the container which is in constant access to the printer. The ink is constantly fed to the machine in bulk to keep the printing process constant and steady. Later ‘anilox’ rolls to collects ink on the press. Anilox is cylindrical in shape which contains numerous microscopic recesses designed for retaining ink. These shapes include: * pyramid recesses * truncated pyramid......

...Kylar Montella 3D Printing in the Medical Field And in Education Jared Berrett 12/1/13 How do 3D printers work? There were a lot of choices to choose from since 3D printing as expanded over the years. As I was looking into 3D printing to see what a good topic would be to expand on, I came across 3D printing in the dental field and in education. 3D printing in the medical field has expanded a whole lot. We can now make bones and some tissue. 3D printing can be used for several things, but I decided to specifically talk about 3d printing in the dental field and in education. First I’m going to talk about and explain why 3d printing is going to be useful in schooling and in the future schooling. Then I’m going to talk and explain some of the bad effects people see on 3d printing. Then I’m going to explain how it is useful in the medical field and how the doctors can improve on using this tool that is now out there. Then lastly I’m going to explain why 3d printing is such a good new technology that we all need to learn how to use and use one for good. How do 3D printers work? They work like inkjet printers, but instead of ink they use plastic. The machine uses ABS plastic, the same as LEGOS. So the first thing is 3d printing in school. Kids these days are going to have a lot of opportunity to learn in the field and be able to have hands on with their learning and such. I read in an article that said “Project difficulty can be tailored to a Student’s abilities and......

Thoughts

...A thought, as defined by the oxford dictionary is “An idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in the mind. It is common to hear a person say that, “I had a thought about X the other day.” Thoughts are usually short lived, discrete events. Everyone experiences thoughts and have no problem identifying them. Thought can refer to the ideas or the arrangement of ideas that result from thinking, the act of producing thoughts, or the process of producing thoughts. Thoughts are the result or product of spontaneous act of thinking. Thoughts, especially in humans, are not that independent, they can be much more complicated and it can appear to be nothing as it seems. All the information received by the mind triggers a chain of thoughts. Edward Chace Tolman, a great experimentalist and a theoretician in psychology was the first to demonstrate thought influence action. After Tolman, a psychologist Roger Shepherd showed that people can actually manipulate thoughts or mental representations. Thoughts are electro-chemical reactions taking place in the brain, but the number and the complexity of these reactions makes it hard to completely understand these reactions. Because thought underlies many human actions and interactions, understanding it’s physical and metaphysical origins, processes and ......

...to hold forever. The stars and you are the same. You are beautiful but only at a distance. And kissed me like sending a thousand lightning on my spine. I tasted salt in your mouth as if you drank the waters of the ocean; good thing you didn’t drown. My skin had blood marks on because you held me so tight that winter night. But that didn’t matter because I love you. And I mean it. -End- It’s a little bit funny how I cut fringes out of my long hair And I would feel very sad every time I look at the mirror. Like I was carry kettle bells with each of my finger I thought every girl in school was perfect and not fat And I curse myself for not being alike. I wasn’t good with words spoken or written, and I was ashamed of myself every time I stood in front to say , perhaps stutter. I look above with a beaten heart. The stars at night became my mother. My father was the moon. Or so I thought. As days went by, I became even sadder. I kept on dropping hints Of sadness and they fall like nothing. As nobody noticed....

...also allows the downloading of the existing plastic gun designs that are used for printing the actual plastic guns. As long as an individual has the knowledge of printing and assembling through 3D you are good to go, however there have been claims that the technology is not that easy because as much as it is easy to print the plastic gun, you cannot do the same with the ammunition that will be used in the gun. 3D plastic guns are a big threat both to a country’s security and the implementation of patent rights. The security will be affected much in countries where acquiring a gun is not easy like England, hence people will take the advantage and print their own guns to use them however they please. The congress man, Rep Steve Israel is against the printing of the 3D plastic guns and of the view that they should be banned because they cannot be detected easily by the metal detectors posing a huge security risk. This is not easy because, banning the guns will not help much as long as the 3D printers are still in existence. Many analysts claim that this will only interfere with the business of 3D printers which are lawfully in existence and also have patent, trademark and copyright protection rights. Apart form being unlawful, it lacks vision and cannot be argued in a court of law, hence need to amend the intellectual property laws to fit in the advancing technology being witnessed in 3D printing and scanning ,that can easily be accessed by virtually everybody ( Hart &......

...What is 3D printing? 3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. How does 3D printing work? It all starts with making a virtual design of the object you want to create. This virtual design is made in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file using a 3D modeling program (for the creation of a totally new object) or with the use of a 3D scanner (to copy an existing object). A 3D scanner makes a 3D digital copy of an object. 3d scanners use different technologies to generate a 3d model such as time-of-flight, structured / modulated light, volumetric scanning and many more. Recently, many IT companies like Microsoft and Google enabled their hardware to perform 3d scanning, a great example is Microsoft’s Kinect. This is a clear sign that future hand-held devices like smartphones will have integrated 3d scanners. Digitizing real objects into 3d models will become as easy as taking a picture. Prices of 3d scanners range from very expensive professional industrial devices to 30 USD DIY devices anyone can make at home. Processes and technologies Not all 3D printers use the same technology. There are several ways to print......

...A popular chart going around shows that since 2001, college textbooks have increased in price more than 100% while recreational books have fallen in price by a little more than 1%. The consumer price index, meanwhile, has only increased about 30%. Have writing, printing, and supplying higher-education materials increased in cost so much that producers are just trying to pass on the expenses? Likely not. The fact is that consumers of college textbooks typically don't have a choice, making the demand inelastic and allowing publishers to charge prices well above what the consumer may value. While fantastic for publishers' margins, is this bubbly business sustainable? Let's analyze it. The rotating roster of publishers McGraw-Hill Education, now owned by Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL ) , Pearson (NYSE: PSO ) , and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt make up the three largest educational publishers. The previous owner of McGraw-Hill Education, McGraw Hill Financial (NYSE:MHFI ) , completed the sale of its textbook segment in March for $2.4 billion in cash, which it is using for share buybacks. Why did McGraw Hill want to divest from its education segment? The company's press release positions the slimmer group as "a high-growth, high-margin benchmarks, content and analytics company." And since completing the sale in March, McGraw Hill's stock has outperformed the S&P 500 by 14%. But was the segment that big of a drag? Not too much. In 2011, its education business brought in 37% of......

...on the rise is three dimensional printing. Three dimensional printers are machines that can take a shapefile or design created in a computer-aided design software, CAD, and produce the custom designed image into a working test product. Three dimensional printing has taken manufacturing to a new level due to the ease of producing prototypes. Companies have harnessed this technology and used it to produce actual size prototypes that can be physically held and interpreted before producing. These prototypes can also benefit by being a “dummy” for creating injection molds. Indeed this technological advance is a great hype and improvement in the world of production saving time and money in the long run; however, the question is raised, can this epidemic be harnessed by everyday users in their home? There are both pros and cons to the use of three dimensional printers that need to be addressed before the decision can be made of whether this advancement is sensible or not. Nick Allen from Gizmodo.com is very strong on his article expressing the cons to the issue. On the other hand, Christopher Barnatt, from his website Explainingthefuture.com, takes more of a liberal stand to the issue at hand. Three dimensional printer pose numerous negative effects to the world. While this technology may seem cool, new, and intuitive, the idea of owning such printer at home may actually be a far cry from reality. The printers with the capability of printing in three dimensions use a......

...In my 3D printing is a vastly expanding field with the excitement and use for 3D printing growing every day. In this paper I will talk about the beginning history of 3D printing and touch on the multiple areas of the economy it will slowly change such as manufacturing, architecture, cooking, prosthetics, organs, and more. The beautiful thing about 3D printing is the possibility of thinking “I can build and make anything I can think up on my own” is amazing. With the length of time it takes to come up with an idea to creating that idea to it being outsourced for manufacturing 3D printers decrease time and money by essentially cutting out the middle man making it so much easier for the consumer. If you are someone in need of a prosthetic extremity 3D printing can decrease the price and time on receiving that prosthetic. For these reasons I extremely believe that 3D printing will drastically change things economically around the world. In history of 3D printing since 1984 there has been extreme progress each year. The 3D printer evolved from the ink jet printer with the idea to substitute ink with actual materials in successive layers to create a physical object from a digital file. Charles Hull the co-founder of 3D systems invented the stereo lithography apparatus (SLA) a printing process that allows a 3D object to be created from digital data. Using UV laser solidifying photo polymer, a liquid with the color of honey that makes three dimensional parts layer by layer...

...3D Printing: New Technology Solving World Problems Berenthia Smith Lecturer: Dr. Raymond Wells Due Date: 23rd January, 2016 College of the Bahamas Abstract In the 21st century, it is inherent to say that technology is new. The word technology is symbolic of the word new in and of itself. Technology is created every day. The human race continues to grapple with the issues of today’s world and how technology can be used to solve world problems. The concept of 3D printing is discussed in relation to cost, customization and diversity. It is visible how 3D printing plays a role in solving world problems. According to White and Bruton’s definition of technology, it is defined as the way people use learning and knowledge to assist progress (2011). In other words, when people and businesses find new ways to use their experiences to solve problems, it is known as technology. Today, there are a number of technologies that are popular; whether it be because they are trendy or because they are rather useful. One of these technologies is Three Dimensional Printing (3D printing). Hoffman’s article defines it as the use of a machine to print objects through a layering process. The machine is controlled by data files usually generated from Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) or Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software. The differences between 3D printing and traditional production is that the objects created the traditional way, once completed, will sometimes have to be further......

The impressions that people tend to give me, sometimes give me the reason to judge them. I know half the time it is wrong to do. For example, I cannot stand to see any woman in pajama pants outside the house. I think it is very nasty for a woman, to come out of the house like that straight out of the bed. My personality type consist of these types of characteristics: skeptical, often stubborn, critical, independent, and determined. Under most circumstances my day-to-day thoughts are consistent with these traits. Self-management is an important trait when dealing people that tend to get within your circle. Self-management can also mean to be able control your emotions, thoughts, professionalism, temper, and the way you communicate with others....
