Promising Manager that Won’t Get Out of His Own Way

Situation Analysis:
Based on the reading, Alex Sander appears on one hand to be a driven and energetic manager. He appears to be the kind of employee that upper management would want to have in place for results oriented progress.
Strengths and weaknesses (combined as these traits can be good or bad depending on the environment and situation) * Alex is a focused individual * Not afraid to take larger than normal risks for the result of a bigger payout/success for himself and the company. * Committed to doing whatever is needed to succeed in the task. * Very self-confident * Has the ability to multitask and to ensure that the project is on task and will be completed within the allotted time frame if not earlier.
Unfortunately, not all is good about having Alex as the product manager. There are opportunities for success within the team and relative teams but the abruptness with which Alex directs and communicates can be felt throughout the material. Even his immediate supervisor has reservations about him in the position.
Opportunities and threats * Team is willing to assist him in the product rollout * Alex has no work life balance * Arrogance is interfering with how the team responds to him and feels about their role and position on the team. * Lack of people skills shows the inability for him to motivate and guide his team; he is taking on projects and assignments out of frustration over not being able to get what he wants and needs out of his direct reports and other teams.
Assumptions and missing information
Sander’s berating of Betsy Garrison, a senior sales analyst, from another department can lead the reader to assume that Sanders feels that he is above the normal chain of command and can degrade other employees. Knowing…...

25 Ways to Get the Most Out of Now

...EN110 Achieving Academic Excellence Assignment 02 EN110 Achieving Academic Excellence 25 Ways to Get the Most Out of Now There are several time management techniques to help a person get the most out of now. The following ten methods are what I feel to be most beneficial: 1. Be aware of your best time of day. Being aware of the best time of day to study is especially beneficial to me because throughout the years, I have learned that no matter how hard I try I cannot study late at night – least wise not effectively. I know I am simply a morning student. Knowing when you are most productive helps to schedule your day and also reduces the guilty feeling of “slow” periods because you have planned for them. 2. Learn to say no. In the beginning of my studies, learning to say no was an easy task for me. I was excited about class and I wanted to succeed. As school continued, I found it harder to say no because I was nervous friends and family would begin to think I was “giving them excuses.” I learned an effective way to communicate my needs with them, and soon “saying no” was a perfectly acceptable and efficient response for both parties. 3. Avoid noise distractions. Avoiding noise distractions is an area that requires the most focus for me. I cannot study or work when I have background noise. Knowing this helps to plan my activities throughout the day so I can be the most productive and not back track my efforts constantly. 4. Ask: Would I pay myself for...

The Easy Way Out

...The Easy Way Out Set in Rome, before the founding of the Roman Republic, The Rape of Lucrece is Shakespeare’s narrative poem about the rape and resulting suicide of the title character. Dazzled by her beauty and virtue and his overwhelming desire to "own" her, Tarquin sneaks into Lucrece's bedroom and does the unthinkable. In an attempt to silence her after the act, he threatens not only to take her life her but claims that he will kill a slave and place him next to her thus proclaiming to the world that they were engaged in a sexual relationship and thereby destroying Lucrece's honor. Tarquin places Lucrece in, what seems to her, an impossible situation. Though Lucrece begs Tarquin to come to his senses and consider his own honor, he gags her with her nightgown and carries out the rape. Afterwards, Lucrece writes to her husband and father to come home quickly and when they do, recounts the atrocity and then stabs herself. Collatinus and Lucretius, then declare Lucrece’s tragedy to the people of Rome, which in turn leads to the downfall of the Tarquin regime and the rise of the Roman Republic. The true tragedy in the story of Lucrece is not the rape itself but the fact that Lucrece feels that suicide is the only option she has as a result. After raping Lucrece, Tarquin expresses a 'blame the victim' mentality. “Thus he replies: ‘The color in thy face, / That even for anger makes the lily pale, / And the red rose blush at her own disgrace, / Shall plead for me and tell...

Othello Is Responsible for His Own Downfall

...responsible for his own downfall.” To what extent do you agree with this statement? Othello’s downfall is a result of his many flaws being played upon by Shakespeare’s most unforgiving, infamous villain; Iago. Accordingly, it is a combination of Iago’s efforts and cunning traps as well as Othello’s jealous, irrational nature that ultimately lead to Othello’s downfall. Othello’s blind trust and faith in Iago allows Iago to easily set moral traps designed to weaken Othello as a person. These manipulate his mind to the brink of insanity and in turn negatively overshadow Othello’s thought process, and given that Othello allowed this to happen, shows how Othello plays a part in his own downfall. Using Othello and the characters around him to his advantage, Iago manipulates Othello’s jealousy, insecurities, reckless behaviour and self-doubt to amplify the damage done by his own traps, thus proving that it is a combination of actions and decisions made by Othello and Iago, and the many characters around them that is ultimately responsible for Othello’s downfall.   It is important to understand Iago’s character and his motives in order to understand his actions, likewise with so many Shakespearean characters. Iago is an arrogant, jealous character; “I know my price, I am worth no worse a place” acting out of pure spite and hatred for Othello; “I hate the Moor.” This line is juxtaposed to "My Lord you know I love you" which Iago repeats multiple times throughout the out course of......

One Way to Get Off

...One way to get off I suddenly awoke from the deep sleep that drugged my mind. Darkness engulfed me. I found myself in a compacted room that was filled with a metallic smell. I tried to move my hands from behind my back but there was a great force that was restraining my movement. A thundering noise echoed through the shadows. It frightened me to my very soul. I was trapped in between the dull grey walls. The hard metal cuffs were biting into the flesh of my wrists. A moan came from the cubicle next to me. I could feel a frisson of fear surging inside of me, gnawing away at my soul. Terrified. I asked in a trembling voice; “Who are you?” A startling voice replied back; “I am Irene. I do not know how I came here” Soon enough my hands were free, and the doors to the cubicle drastically opened. Light shone on Irene’s face, her eyes glistening and her brown hair shining. She wore a shaggy, black button down top and dirty work boots. She seemed frightened from the darkness, but her skin was so porcelain, both pale and perfect. I couldn’t get over the fact that her face looked like a perfect china doll you’d purchase at an antique store. Her lips were a glowing red, and her jaw was so pointed, falling perfectly with her diamond shaped face. Her forehead was rather wide, her eyes almond, her noise pointed and her mouth, a cupid’s bow. Her teeth were perfect. And she had very high cheekbones. Her face would get the attention of anybody, but her clothes were such shabby things.......

When Money Get S in the Way

...Kevin Perez Unit 2 Research Paper 1 Problem Solving Thur AM When Money Gets in the Way They say money makes the world go round, but does it. Money is a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes, in other words we use it to buy things. I have a problem with money, maybe because I don’t have much of it, but this same problem exists among billions of people around the world. The problem may be that someone has not gotten the proper education, maybe someone is born in a part of the world were resources are scarce, maybe there are too many people for too little things to work on, or maybe the problem is money itself. There are studies and ideas still today from top thinkers and revolutionaries like Thomas Paine whos ideas led the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence who believed that the government was the solution to our problems, to Friedrich Hayek the Austrian economist and philosopher who believed that the government was actually the problem. These ideas have always come across our minds but we never think they are capable of happening. Its an idea that can give dignity to millions, an idea that can unite politicians and accomplished what we should have accomplished a long time ago and finally get rid of poverty. A basic income. A basic income for everyone means that it would be a right, just like the freedom of speech. It won’t be a favor, it will be given to everyone unconditionally, poor or wealthy, you would have......

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

...What Got You Here Won’t Get You There I knew of Marshall’s coaching work from the executives I speak to. He has an excellent reputation. When I saw his book at the airport, I had to pick it up. It’s well done and well worth the read. Fact is, every one of us has our weak points. We can learn about them from character assessments, skill testing, business results, and feedback from colleagues, customers, and friends. Somebody like me knows I get bored easily and have a low attention to detail. The essence of Marshall’s message is that if we don’t address these weak points, they can affect our career. Marshall’s emphasis is in communication. There is very little in this book about time management, systems control, delegation techniques and other tools that can help make us more efficient. This book is about the soft side and what you can do about it. Marshall’s approach reminds me of a twelve-step program. First you have to admit you have a problem, then you have to apologize to those you’ve impacted with your problem, and then you have to declare your intention to do something about it, and ultimately, reach into a higher power source. For Marshall, this higher power source is coaching and support from friends. Marshall tells us that successful people believe they have succeeded, can succeed, will succeed, and will choose to succeed. Marshall states the only natural law he’s witnessed in three decades of observing success is this: “People will do......

Get the Heck Out the Hospital!

...Running head: The Business of Being Born Get the Heck Out the Hospital? Erica Wade Mesa Community College Abstract In the film titled “The Business of Being Born” directed by Abby Epstein in 2008, you are given information that supports home births being better for the US mortality rate of newborns and their mothers. This film shines light on the tactics used to change home births from a norm in society to a type of outcast or out dated procedure. This film breaks down a specific time line in which, certain medications phased in or out and when child birth went from a personal bonding moment between mother and child to a medical procedure in hospitals. The film displays the fact that the US maternity system has given reign of procedures and policies to the bottom line which is money. Get the Heck Out the Hospital The film stated that the US had the second highest mortality rate among other industrialized cultures. Which raises the question why is the mortality rate so high in the US. I have to honestly say while watching this film I did not receive a definitive answer. Instead poorly supported statistics was used to tie hospital births to the mortality rate in the US. However in the film it is suggested that majority of the deaths that happen in the US are mothers and babies that delivered in a hospital. But what is not provided is real facts and numbers, but it is not taken into consideration that if 99% of births are in hospitals then it would be true that......

How to Get Out of a Bad Date

...A 3 March 2015 How to get out of a bad date I think we have all heard it before, to be careful when you meet someone online and then see each other in real life because not everything seems like his profile picture or his bio. But we are very stubborn woman and we always learn the hard way. Well that was what happened to me and it starts with when we both agreed to finally meet. The day when I met him in person I seriously needed to reevaluate everything and say, “On second thought, I’m not really into online dating anymore”. Before my eyes was a man about four feet seven, and I am a five feet eight female, the irony is real. I surely couldn’t tell him in the face that he was a lying, ugly, and old man when it clearly said in his bio he was 24, and I am 21 YEAR OLD! In his profile picture he had a resemblance of Channing Tatum, but here in front of me he resembles papa smurf. I’m no model but I have to admit, I am easy on the eyes, with my blonde silky hair, and charming personality, but enough about me and my gracious good looks. He then motions for me to go inside the restaurant we are meeting at, which is McDonalds by the way, and of course he picked it. And the creepiest part, he couldn’t stop staring at me, and he had some sort of allergies which had him sneezing every five minutes, and I couldn’t eat my cheeseburger in peace. He kept saying jokes that were old as his soul and I kept awkwardly chuckling. That was it, I needed to figure out my game plan, my list of......

Five Key Ways to Get to Know Your Customer

...Five Ways to Know Your Customer Better than Your Competitor Does Professor Julie Hennessy What’s the challenge of Marketing Strategy? It’s not really, at its core, about advertising, though successful communications require a good marketing strategy. Likewise, Marketing Strategy isn’t just about how to price, what features to build into your product, or how to get it to the consumer, though these are important too. Marketing Strategy is about identifying a positioning, a clear plan for creating value for a specific and well-defined customer group. It’s about delineating a way that you will create more value for the customer you’ve chosen to serve than your competition does, because that’s how you win. Finally and importantly, it’s about creating that value for the customer in a way that creates superior value for the firm. Points of execution— communications pieces, revenue capture mechanisms, distribution partner’s incentive structures, product and service design specifications—are all both interesting and important to successful execution of a well-founded strategy. But the best execution in the world rarely helps a firm win a battle where it has no strategic advantage. If Marketing Strategy is about locating that intersection between what customers want and where an individual firm can create value better than competition, then superior understanding of customers is crucial. Having a better sense for what would create customer value than your competitor......

Active Ways to Get New Clients

...Active Ways to Get New Clients 1. Get the word out to family and friends in a meaningful way. I had a friend launching a business + blog who chose a method that I now love to use and help other people use: she wrote (actual) personalized + purposeful messages to each person. This may sound very “duh” to you, but make sure each time you reach out, you include: * a personal note that lets someone know this is not the same email/message 300 other people got; make a connection on a hobby, interest, desire, or need of theirs * a brief description of the type of work you are doing now and why it’s so important to you * the ways in which your friend/contact can help you (Do you want referrals if your friend knows someone in need of your services? Do you want people to share your message?) * a clear way for people to practically do what you’re asking/hinting (for example: if you’re asking for people to share your brand on Facebook, give them a brief description and picture “if they so choose to use it” . . . or if you’re asking for referrals from a good friend, give them an idea of what they could email out to others–and perhaps even give them a sweet freebie to distribute) * a sincere “thank you” for the person’s time in reading your message and in helping you any way they see fit Are you at a loss for where to pull personal connections from other than your phone’s contact book and Facebook friends list? Think of people you may know through: * volunteer......

“You Cannot Motivate Managers. They Are Self-Propelled. You Just Get Out of Their Way If You Really Want Performance”. Comment.

...Self propelled describes something that moves progresses or acts on its own power without needing outside help. Like anything else, leadership ability is distributed throughout a population. Can you be a good leader without being a good manager? In my experience, the best leaders are also great managers, and the best managers have strong leadership capabilities. To be successful, you must have both a passion for improving your organization and the capability to drive your efforts through to completion. Some people are "natural" leaders, others prefer to operate capably within a well-defined context, and many people are somewhere in between. Natural leaders have important core abilities, but they often need careful training in the more practical aspects of converting a creative vision into a concrete program of action. Very often, they need to understand the length of the change lifecycle so they don't underestimate the importance of persistence. Most people, however, can develop their leadership skills by working at it. The process starts with the recognition that leadership requires "ambidextrous" activities. The first hurdle is recognizing that excellence at the day-to-day is critical, but it is not enough. The second is the need to look inside yourself and decide whether you are willing to be uncomfortable for a prolonged period while you conceptualize and lead the change. The ultimate reward is the deep satisfaction that comes from seeing something new that......

Ways to Get Started on an Essay

...When writing a paper I always try free writing everything that is going on in my mind about a topic to get it all out in the open. Even if my thoughts are biased, completely random or repetitive, or have no truth to it I find it easier to see which side of the argument I more agree on or if any of my thoughts have any real basis to them. After I get all of my thoughts in the open I underline key points and try researching them to see if there is any research to support them. Illegal aliens are as stated illegal; illegal acts are to be judged and then condemned by law and then taken care of. The act of crossing over the border is illegal; it is unfair to the thousands of immigrants trying to come over to the states the legal way; this is perhaps also why the process to come over is so hard to begin with. Amnesty should not be granted because it would only worsen conditions for those already in the states; illegal immigrants should not gain access to social security benefits; if they have been paying for it to begin with it is because the only way they could be paying for it is through the use of some one elses stolen ssc number; if they came over illegally they did not have one to begin with; why give them something they did not earn? Illegal immigrants would take advantage of welfare and medical aid; it just doesn’t seem fair to give those that are illegal get better benefits than those that are already here. We are also suffering; the USA has fallen into a state of job......
