The differences Whites and Blacks, as well as their comparisons, are portrayed through two different movies of two different eras of American history. Remember the Titans centers around an integrated high school football team in Virginia in the 1970’s. The team has to figure out how to bond together as one in order to overcome racial adversity of the south in the 1970’s. The Great Debaters takes place in Texas during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Three black college students on a debate team, along with their coach Professor Tolson, travel the road debating more and more prestigious colleges, while developing as young educated black men (and women) in the racist 1930’s south.
Character development is both films plays a vital role. In Remember the Titans, the relationship formed between Gary and Julius, and Boone and Yost symbolizes the White/Black differences coming together and actually forming stronger friendships then that of two of the same races. There were also the supporting roles of characters that helped integrate the football team such as Louie, Rev, and Blue who were the very first players who were able to set color aside as it has nothing to do with neither football nor the quality of a man. In The Great Debaters, the growth of Henry Lowe and the relationship between James Farmer Jr. and his father are crucial to watch. Henry Lowe starts off as a misguided young man who responds to conflicts with walking away and surrounds himself with alcohol and women. By the end of the film Lowe has matured, taken the reigns of his life, and becomes a leader for Henry Farmer Jr. and Samantha Booke. James Farmer Sr. is a strict minister who runs his household accordingly. There is a bit of distance between James Farmer Jr. and his father, but as the film progresses both prove…...

...Gloria Bicolli Remember the Titans HRD 363 Midterm Tuckman and Jensen 1977 Tuckman and Jensen model focuses on the development of internal relations among the team members. There are 5 stages, Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning. The movie Remember the Titans was very inspiring especially because it is based on a true story. This movie showed all of Tuckman’s 5 stages. Stages of Group Development The first stage is forming; this is when members get to know one another. This is one of the most important stages. In the movie, this occurs when all of the football players are in the gym ready to meet Coach Boone. All the different race groups were together. In this interaction, the athletes have come together for the first time, they are unsure of their roles on the team, and they are also unsure what to expect from each other and the coach. Coach Boone asks Petey whether or not he likes football. The coach is very directive he tells the team “This is no democracy”. (YouTube) After they went to Gettysburg College for Camp, the coach made them sit in the same positions they had on the way to camp. This was one of his ways to form the team. The team walks to camp together, this is the first time we see them grouped whites and blacks together as a team, which signifies they have finished the forming stage. The second stage is storming; this is where all the conflicts and disagreements happen although the majority of the movie conflict occurs......

The Great Debaters

...The Great Debaters was a very powerful and inspirational movie. Watching Denzel, known as Mr. Tolson, lead his debate team to such high success in a time and place where black success was so heavily denied inspired my own academic success. The ability for a group of young children to be victimized by such racism and such denial of basic freedoms and have the capability to rise above and succeed against not only fellow black colleges, but white colleges as well. It was truly a movie of motivation to show how desire, dedication, and perseverance can prevail even in the toughest of times and the toughest of circumstances. During the time, Negro hate and racism was heavily practiced particularly in the state of Texas where Wiley College existed. Not only was the government enforcing unjust laws, they were denying any sort of freedom of speech which all Americans have the right of. In a country where we are all born as free men and are all granted rights as citizens, Blacks were an exception. Is this not unjust? Is this not a crime violating the constitution of this country? In the state of Texas, negroes were being lynched and tortured because of the rise against the status quo, and here we had a group of college students civilly disobeying the law. How can a man born in the U.S by law being given rights granted by the constitution be lynched and burned on the stake with no justice? These men have the same rights as any other white man and this group of students that joined......

Remember the Titans

...Remember The Titans Within this organization there are two main leader who take very different approaches in there method of management. Coach Boone is the head football coach, he is very strict when it comes to his players as well as his team staff, he takes a classical approach at management. Division of labor and priorities are some main concepts used in the classical approach, Boone believe’s everyone should know where they stand and who is the boss, he is focused on building a strong winning team. Coach Boone is straight forward and to the point, in the first team meeting he informs the team that, “Best player will play, color don’t matter,” and he lets the players know, “This is not a democracy, this is a dictatorship. I am the law.” This shows Boone believe in division of labor, by matching the players skills to their position, and that he leads with bureaucracy, letting it be known clearly who is in charge. Coach Yoast is the former head coach made assistant defensive coach, who choses to lead with a behavioral approach to management. Yoast tells Boone he wants his players to hold their positions even after Boone takes over, he also tells Boone he too strict at camp and that the players should be having some fun. This shows Yoast believe’s that the players will preform better for the team if they are satisfied with the position they have, and if they are having fun while playing and practicing. Taking a behavioral approach to management, Yoast have confidence......

...Interpersonal Conflict in Remember the Titans I choose the movie – remember the titans. It is an inspirational movie, making my blood boiling from the beginning to the end and teaching us that we are all equal no matter what race you are. It talks about not only the games, but also racial conflicts, friendship and the significance of life. The story goes like that: in the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria Virginia integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The Caucasian head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach from North Carolina. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Many of these tensions are eased during the two-week training camp in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. When players return to Alexandria the players find the city in turmoil due to the forced desegregation of the high school. Through facing a lot of objections and questions, the players and the coaches still choose to unify, depend on and trust each other. As the season progresses the team's success causes the community to accept the changes. After the Titans' perfect season, the team and the city are closer than ever. There are many interpersonal conflicts in the movie, such as the racial conflict between the black and the white, the conflict between Coach Herman Boone and Coach Bill Yoast, the conflict between Gerry Bertier and his girlfriend Emma and so on. Because of different cultural background, conflicts arise between...

The Great Debater

...The Great Debaters The Great Debaters is a very nice movie, and also inspiring. The movie The Great Debaters, thought me a lot about debating, from The Great Debaters; I have learned that debating is not only about talking or throwing arguments. Debating is essentially about passing a message across, feeding your audience or opponents with valid argumentative statements. Strong researches for the selected topic are the main keys and also a primary requirement for a successful debate. With a well conducted research on your topic, you will be more familiar, thus comfortable arguing. Another critical element on debating is how to choose your topic, you have to be very careful with the choice of you topic because your audience or opponents needs to be involve as much as you are, involve means directly touch by the topic. For instance you cannot argue about how it is important to have a High Definition TV in front of a blind audience, eventually it will be a lost of efforts because your audience would careless due to their handicap. A High Definition TV by the way is a feature that comes with some of the flat screen TV and with that feature; it enables you to see every details on the screen. However, confident is another great skill for debating, you need to be confident, convince yourself that you are right about what you debating. Once you are convinced enough, it will be easier to convince your audience. With The Great Debaters, I had a better understanding of debating,......

...Introduction In the movie of Remember the Titans, development is the key aspect of the story. The change that takes place in the Virginia suburban was the integration of black and white people. This change affected the whole community, school as well as the students in the football team. We as organizational development consultants job was to oversee the change that happened in this community and to manage this change to help the people that are going through this change. Firstly it is important to know what is meant by organizational development. It is a planned process of developing an organization to be more effective in accomplishing its desired goals. Organisational development can also be defined as a theory and practice of planned, systematic change in the attitudes, beliefs, and values of the employees through creation and reinforcement of long-term training programs. Organisational development is action oriented. It starts with a careful organization-wide analysis of the current situation and of the future requirements, and employs techniques of behavioral sciences such as behavior modeling, sensitivity training, and transactional analysis. Its objective is to enable the organization in adopting-better to the fast-changing external environment of new markets, regulations, and technologies. Regarding the change that happened in Remember the Titans we decided to apply two different models to help the people through this change. The two models are: The Lewin......

...without him. Yoast reconsiders realizing the boys would lose the chance at scholarships and becomes the defense coordinator. During football camp racially motivated conflicts are handled by Boone with forceful coaxing and extreme athletic training. The boys develop racial tolerance and become a true team. Upon returning from camp, Boone is informed by a black school board member that he will be fired at the loss of a single game. The Titans slowly gain community support, while battling racial prejudice, having an undefeated season. Prior to state semi-finals, a white school board member approaches Yoast and implies he wants Boone fired because of his race, offering Hall of Fame induction if the team loses the game. Referee bias being more than apparent during the next game, Yoast confronts the head official threatening scandal exposure to the press unless the game is refereed fairly. The loss of candidacy induction for Yoast is the result of the teams win. During the towns’ victory celebration the team captain is paralyzed in a car accident. The Titans win state and return ten years later for his funeral. A conflict between interdependent parties requires the parties to be dependent upon each other. The actions whether good or bad affects all involved. This concept is expressed when in a scene between Gary and Juleus during a practice at football camp. Gary feels Juleus is not doing his part playing as a team member. Juleus expresses to Gary that he is unfair in his......

...Remember the Titans Jessica Valentine SOC 318 Sociology of Sport Dr. Marnie Carroll May 18, 2015 Remember the Titans Our general public has truly and still right up 'til today managed a large number of issues that significantly separates societies, organizations, associations and all the more essentially individuals. Sports can in a flash be put in this classification when matters identified with isolation, race and ethnicity are interrelated. I have chosen the film "Remember the Titans" to examine the effects of the previously stated as they relate to sports all through this paper. In 2000, Remember the Titans was an American sports film focused upon fanciful African American football mentor Herman Boone who was depicted by super star Denzel Washington. This motion picture was not just one of the top rated and enthralling films of its year, however offered groups of onlookers a complete representation of mutual activities and leads in the lives of individuals like themselves. Using our text to break down and thoroughly describe the movie in regards to realistic conflict theory, cultural theory and racism all of which plays into the factor of sociology of sport. Prejudice is the amazing conviction that races have unmistakable attributes and inherited variables, and, likewise, certain races are better than others. The realistic conflict theory suggests that contentions between two distinct gatherings will emit as the gatherings contend over the same constrained assets...

Remember the Titans

...Campbell, one of Gerry’s black teammates. Despite the racism and tension in the air, Gerry made it his duty to be positive and lead the Titans to victory. “Remember the Titans” is not only a commemoration of the breaking of racial barriers in Virginia, but also of the true meaning of leadership. Julius Campbell and Gerry Bertier, as well as many other people in this movie, prove the viewers that leadership is about being a trendsetter, standing for what you believe in, and having a positive influence. Successful leaders look for opportunities, not obstacles. Bertier in many ways is the protagonist in this movie however he probably wouldn't want to be considered above anyone or more important than any of his teammates. As one watches "Remember the Titans", Gerry Bertier stands out as a true leader and captain and embraces it throughout this movie. He gives us multiple examples of his emotional intelligence as well as his passion: Two qualities I believe every leader must possess. Bertier's passion is reflective in nearly every scene he is present, most noticeably when he is on the football field. He loves playing the game, and he loves his teammates, and he loves his coaches. He respects them and he leads them with a passion that only a captain can lead with.  In my opinion the greatest word in any language in any dictionary is passion. Every great leader has it and no person has ever been their best version of themself without having a passion for something that......

...deal with some demons during the game they wanted him to throw. On one hand he could throw the game and get inducted into the Hall of Fame, on the other he could do the right thing and coach the team to victory. In the end he chose to do the right thing. He dug in his heels and stood up for Coach Boone and the team. He got fed up with the way his boys were being treated on the field. He went to the official that was calling against the Titans and told him he didn’t care if he went down with him. If he didn’t call a fair game he would go to the papers. He went back to the bench and told his boys to in so many words destroy the other team’s offense. He then looked at Boone and told him to run up the score. He didn’t care that he lost the nomination into the Hall of Fame. He could look at his daughter and his team knowing that he had done the right thing. Were there any alternatives? Possibly. He could have gone to Boone beforehand and told him what was going on. He could have told them no from the get go. He could have went ahead and let the Titans lose. Looking at the film and watching how Yoast was with his daughter he could not have done the wrong thing and looked at his daughter and team with any ounce of dignity....

The Great Debaters

...THE GREAT DEBATERS Based on a true story, the plot revolves around the efforts of debate coach Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington) at historically black Wiley College to place his team on equal footing with whites in the American South during the 1930s, when Jim Crow laws were common and lynch mobs were a pervasive fear for blacks. In the movie, the Wiley team eventually succeeds to the point where they are able to debate Harvard University. This was their 47th annual debate team. Released in 2007, Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters was presented to the world in order to tell the story of Wiley College’s debate triumphs. While certain facts were altered for the sake of creating the film, such as the final debate being between Wiley College and Harvard rather than USC, the story of the Wiley College debate team has been a model of and for the Urban Debate League (UDL) Movement. The movie begins with a scene following Henry Lowe that is simultaneously overlaid with a speech given by Dr. James Farmer. The speech is directed at incoming students and covers topics such as maturity and discipline, preaching that “you must do what you have to do so you can do what you want to do” (4:08) Henry is attending a party at a barn where he finds himself in a fight with another man at the party. He threatens to kill the man when he pins him to the ground. At the last moment, Melvin Tolson, a professor and director of the Wiley College debate team, stops Henry from harming the......
