Role and Functions of a Health Care Manager

Health care managers and administrators are increasingly assuming leadership and management responsibilities for multiple units and departments (Purnell, 1999). Managers on various levels in a health care organization, spend a significant amount of time on communicating, problem solving, decision making, collaboration with others internally or externally, people development, and cost containment. Managers perform these various tasks listed above through a process called management. The process of management consists of four cycles: organizing, planning, controlling the use of resources, and leading to accomplish performance goals (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007). The most important role a health care manager has cannot be limited to just one function because each function is equally of importance. But for this assignment, I would say a valuable function of a manager is leadership. In leading employees, a manager must have the ability, knowledge, and skills to take charge and lead the organization in the way it should be ran to accomplish the organizations goals. A leader/manager must be able to build up his or her employees’ enthusiasm to work hard to fulfill plans and accomplish objectives (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007). A manager must be able to work as a team alongside his or her subordinates, as well direct at the same time. Teamwork along with leadership will strongly build upon employees’ enthusiasm and work ethics. The most significant aspect related to health care management that I would like to gain is to be prepared and confidently know how to handle all situations, have a better understanding and be able to communicate effectively internally and externally, and to become the best, effective health care manager…...

For example, a manager that works in a long term care facility may oversee several areas of the facility with the help from other departmental managers. Managers that work in the hospital may oversee one or more departments (“emergency room, fast track and step down unit.”) However, the manager of a clinic or physician’s office may oversee the entire facility. Another manager is the clinical manager; they are responsible for creating and implementing policies for specific departments, and preforming the performance evaluations of the personnel, as well as developing a budget for the department. Clinical managers have experience in the health care operations in the department one oversees. The health information manager is responsible for securing and maintaining patients’ records.
