...April 1st, 2013 How Sam Walton transformed Rural America The history of Retail is a storied one in America. Before 1850 there were few choices for Americans in rural areas to find goods at decent prices. The invention of the catalog was the main way for early rural Americans to get a wide variety of goods mailed to them with a bit of credit and good old ingenuity from first Aaron Montgomery Ward and then the ever expanded and refined works of Richard Sears. Before these opportunities the town’s general store was basically all that was available to most of America. Sears had an idea to provide a multitude of products to many who had no other way of acquiring them. He took Wards business model and expanded upon it. Working a 12 hour day, 7 days a week, Sears set out to catch up with industry leader Montgomery Ward and Company. The strategy was the same – low price, heavy advertising and a money-back guarantee. But Sears was able to execute the strategy more effectively and within 10 years he had caught up with and surpassed the sales volume of Montgomery Ward and Company. (Buris and Jeneck) It was this type of risk taking and hard work that made American entrepreneurs so successful. Not all had what it took but without the risk taking, big business could have never grown to be the multi-billion dollar industries we see in today’s world. Growing up in a large city I never really understood the hoopla around the Wal-Mart phenomenon. When they opened up in......

Sam Chung

...Sam Chung Sam Chung was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Chung taught at Northern Michigan University and is now teaching at Arizona State University in Tempe. Chung’s work has been included in such publications as Contemporary Ceramics, The Art of Contemporary American Pottery, The Complete Guide to High Fire Glazes, and Masters of Porcelain. Sam Chung has a unique view of what he likes for his pottery pieces; he is interested in the way that pots have the unique ability to serve a multitude of roles and functions. He likes to not just make ordinary symmetrical pieces, but something more with a curve and a part of clay here and there to where you don’t know what to do with it other than look at it and be amazed. He is interested in a pot’s ability to contain not only physical matter, but also elements of history, memory, familiarity, and suggestion. I for one really like how some of his work looks, I like the different unique style of work. He goes above what the average artist does. It looks like, by what I saw he did, that he likes to use mainly white with black line looks, but in later years he has done more with color in his work. I like the black and white more, just because it is a more neutral and I like those colors in art better than the reds or blues or greens etc. In recent work Sam Chung has used a cloud pattern on his work. This is used a lot in Korean work as well. For his schooling he got a Master of Fine Arts Degree (M.F.A.) in Ceramics. He also got a......

A Lovable Person—Sam

..."I am Sam" is a touched movie of the relationship of a mentally handicapped father—Sam and a very sensible daughter—Lucy. Sam is special, because he only has the seven years old children’s IQ, just so he has a good character and live a happy life. Sam is simple and pure, so that people feel easy and relaxed to associate with him. Although he is a retard, he is not self-abased but beams with smiles all day. He is like a clear spring infusing into the fierce competitive society, which can warm the cold hearts of people in the modern society. Moreover, Sam had a positive attitude to his life and his job. In spite of his handicap, he did his best to live and work with the spirit of persistence. For instance, when Sam and Rita had lunch, he wanted to treat Rita in order to prove that he had the ability to live. Another example is that he did a good job in the coffeehouse he worked, making the owner intended to give him a promotion. When talking about his persistence, it is clearly showed in the movie that he kept his resolve to ask Rita to be his lawyer. It was this persistence that gave him the chance to have his pro bono lawyer. In addition, Sam lives a simple life. It is only a simple reason that can drive him to happiness or sadness. For example, Sam together with his friends accompanied Lucy to buy clothes, after buying they held air balloons passing the avenues with delight. Thus we can see that their worlds are such simple and joyful. What’s more, Sam is......

Sam Bowie

...Sam Bowie Sam Bowie, one of the toughest players ever. He was drafted in the 1984 draft. He was taken second overall by the Portland Trailblazers, yes second over the legendary Michael Jordan. Before he was drafted he had to get his legs X-rayed because he has a reputation of bad legs. The doctor took the mallet and hit his left tibia, he told the doctor it didn’t hurt but deep down inside there was pain that he hid. Sam hid this pain because he knew that if NBA scouts for the draft found out he would not be picked early in the draft. He was doing this for his job, a better draft pick is more money. The Trailblazers needed him a lot, so they could try and deal with Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He was destroying the west and the Los Angels Lakers were their biggest competition. When Sam came out of college he was expected to be a good star in the NBA but injuries limited him to play only in 511 games out of a possible 820. He was never able to make an All-Star game. He played in 10 seasons, never playing a full season, at most 79 games. The best season statistically would have to be his rookie year, the 1984-85 season. He played in 76 games, started 62 of those. He had 2.7 blocks per game, 10.0 points per game, 2.8 assists and 8.6 rebounds per game. He had a fracture in his shin in his last year of college basketball and hid it from NBA scouts, he just played through the pain. He broke his left leg the next season. He came back from a dangerous injury. The very......

Sam Cooke

...Sam Cooke In a class titled History of Rock ‘n Roll, one would think that the course would cover almost every major artist who participated in or influenced the rise of the genre. However, due to time constraints and personal preferences, every artist cannot be given the credit they deserve in the proper way—at least not all in one semester! That is okay, though. In this paper I plan on introducing an artist whose career and influence on the creation of the rock n’ roll era both was tremendous in his own right. Sam Cooke was a revolutionary artist who in some instances set the precedent for many artists and movements that followed. His music, singing, and performance helped solidify Cooke as one of the all-time greats. As a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame charter member, the need for his presence on the syllabus and in this class is irrefutable. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 22, 1931, to the Reverend and Mrs. Charles Cook, Sr., Sam Cooke was one of eight Cook children. This son of a Baptist preacher and sibling to four brothers and three sisters was born into a lifestyle conducive to a musical career. The large family and church background provided for the perfect set-up for a gospel family group. That’s just what they did—together forming “The Singing Children”. (Wolff). Cooke’s musical talents and interests continued to thrive in the ensuing years as he moved from one musical group to another, working to make a name for himself and for the......

Wilkinson Volunteer Report

...Wilkinson Center Volunteer Experience I volunteered at the Wilkinson Center in East Dallas. The Wilkinson Center was founded back in 2003. The Wilkinson Center is a leading poverty rescue and prevention agency for the working poor. They serve over 14,000 people annually, mainly in East and South East Dallas. Not only do they provide food for people, but they also provide several other services too to help people in poverty in the Dallas area. They provide GED, ESL, and computer training classes as well. I also used to volunteer there during their summer camp programs for young kids that range from 1st grade to 8th. Which is a great camp for allowing kids to grow and learn, and experience things that otherwise they would not normally have the opportunity to experience. This time I volunteered in the food pantry. I have volunteered at the food pantry before at the Wilkinson Center, but it was a long time ago when it was still apart of my church at the Munger Place Methodist Church in East Dallas. Now they have their own building in a shopping strip further in East Dallas. Unfortunately, the day I went was not the best day to go. The head volunteer worker had to leave to go pick up a shipment of food from the food bank, which meant that there was only 4 of us to help work the pantry line. North Texas Food Bank is the main supplier for the Wilkinson Center’s food pantry. Sometimes other people will offer to become donors as well. To become a donor there is an......

Mrs Wilkinsons Letter to the Panel

...Mrs. Wilkinson’s letter to the panel Elite Dancing Panel The Royal Ballet School 46 Floral St London WC2E 9DA Great Britain Hello My name is Mrs. Wilkinson, and I’m a ballet teacher at a community hall in Everington, County Durham. I don’t know if you have ever visited us up here on the north, but Durham is a lovely place – even with its financial struggles. Although a large portion of the land is dedicated to agriculture and production of dairy products, the current strike has hit us exceedingly hard. A lot of people here are unemployed, and relies entirely of soup kitchens and food parcels – just like in a lot of other places here in England, that are also dependent of the coalmines. As you probably know, there have been several clashes between the police and rioters. Take the Battle of Oregave as an example; with more than 5000 police officers and just as many civilians partaking, it is absurd. No man should ever have to fight for a pair that is barely reasonable. Anyhow, back to the ballet! I am not writing to you regarding the strike. The community hall offers both ballet and boxing – some would say that one is for girls and then boys. I’ve had the pleasure of encountering an exceptionally talented male ballet dancer recently - the first male one here in Everington. His name is Billy Elliott, and he lives with his brother, mom, dad and grandmother in a small terraced house. Sadly, his mother died two years ago. His brother, Tony, and his father, Jackie, are......

Dear Sam

...Dear Sam, I'm sorry I haven't written to you in a while; I have ben working at the general store this last month and haven't had much time to write back. However, I write to you now not just for pleasantries, but for your support in the American fight for independence from the British. I know that I am asking much of you, but I wouldn't ask if I wasn't in need. For a long time now, the British have had us under their thumb and it's time we take our stand. For such a long time, we have had to write letters back and fourth to deal with simple crimes, because the British want to make all the decisions. Fifty-five delegates in the united states have created the Declaration of Independence, by which I believe we can become free from the Tyranny of British rule. We Americans believe that all men are created equal with certain unalienable rights. No Man is greater than the other. We want to live in a democracy in which every state has a say in what decisions are made; instead of having one man make all our decisions based on what would, in the end, benefit him more than anyone else. That being said, what the fifty-five delegates wish to create is a two house congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives, for a legislature. In the House of Representatives has members of the state, the number from each state being measured by the population of each state; while the Senate will have two members from every state despite the population of that state,......

Sam Walton

...Sam Walton was born on 29th March 1918 near Kingfisher, Oklahoma to Thomas and Nancy Walton. He lived on a farm up until 1923 when his father decided to return to his previous occupation as a loan appraiser because farming was not providing the family with sufficient income. Tagging along with his father on some of the farm repossessions, he saw many families being turned out of their land. This instilled him with the importance of frugality at a young age. Growing up during the Great Depression meant that he had to work before and after school to help his family meet their financial needs. He milked the family cows every morning; his mother would bottle the milk while he was at school, and after football practice he would deliver the bottles. He also delivered newspapers, sold magazine and subscriptions, and raised and sold rabbits and pigeons. He still found time to become an Eagle Scout, making him the youngest Eagle Scout in Missouri history. With his father always travelling, his mother, Nan Walton, took on most of the work of raising, disciplining, and motivating Sam Walton. She had high ambitions for him. She read a lot and loved education, and insisted that he would go to college and make something of himself. In 1933, at the start of Sam’s sophomore year in high school, the family moved to Columbia, Missouri which was home to several colleges. This was largely due to Nan Walton’s urging as she felt that the change would improve his chances of going to college. He......
