Abstract
The Abstract is a summary of the paper, not an intro. The reader should be able to read the Abstract and get a good idea of what the paper is about and the conclusion you drew. It is written in block form without the first line indented and should be 150 or less in length. The entire paper should be in Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced with no extra spaces between sections, headers and text, paragraphs, etc. Go to the Home tab of Word and click on Paragraph. Under Paragraph, choose 0 under the Spacing section. Choose Double Space under Line Spacing and First Line under Special. Again, the first line of the Abstract should not be indented, but the rest of the paragraphs in the paper should be.

Full Title of the Paper
For this section you will need to decide on a thesis statement for the paper. This is a general statement about your topic that shows your approach and point of view. It is an introduction and shows how the entire paper fits together. The length will vary, but should be at least a few paragraphs with new ideas in each paragraph
Level 1 Heading
Here is where you start the body of your paper. Tie it in with the previous section to make sure the paper flows well. Break your ideas into paragraphs, one idea per paragraph. Long paragraphs are difficult to follow, especially if they contain multiple ideas. The first sentence of each paragraph should give the general idea and then you can expand throughout the rest of the paragraph. Each paragraph should be at least three sentences.
Cite your sources as you go by placing citations immediately after the info you took from a source or after a direct quote. You cannot just put a citation at the end of a long paragraph if it contains both information from a source and your comments. When…...

Apes and Language: A Review of the Literature Over the past thirty years, researchers have demonstrated that the great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans) resemble humans in language abilities more than had been thought possible. Just how far that resemblance extends, however, has been a matter of some controversy. Researchers agree that the apes have acquired fairly large vocabularies in American Sign Language and in artificial languages, but they have drawn quite different conclusions in addressing the following questions: The writer sets up her organization in the introduction. 1. How spontaneously have apes used language? 2. How creatively have apes used language? 3. Can apes create sentences? 4. What are the implications of the ape language studies? This review of the literature on apes and language focuses on these four questions. Headings, centered, help readers follow the organization. A signal phrase names all four authors and gives date in parentheses. How Spontaneously Have Apes Used Language? In an influential article, Terrace, Petitto, Sanders, and Bever (1979) argued that the apes in......

...development. It is a responsibility of all health care professionals. Unfortunately, many health care professionals, especially those outside of academia are unfamiliar with the publication process. The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the publication process from conception of the idea through actual publication. The topics addressed include finding a publishable idea, finding the right journal for publication, contacting the editor and preparing and submitting a manuscript. The paper will also discuss actual and perceived obstacles to publication. Chapter One Introduction In this world of evidence based practice, it is becoming more and more important for health care professionals to share their clinical successes and their failures. Health care professionals have a responsibility to themselves, their colleagues and their patients to read what others are saying, to evaluate the relevance of what they are reading and to write so that their successes can be implemented by others. The opportunities to be published are growing every year. Albarran and Scholes (2005) state that: In the past two decades there has been a phenomenal rise in the number of peer reviewed publications, either as paper-print or as online journals, and this has been in response to the growing demand for information, research activity and the necessity to apply empirical findings to the delivery of patient care. ...Management and Business and other SEU graduate programs have adopted American Psychological Association (APA) as its format for papers. The School of Management and Business Website has a template that can be used when the APA format is required for a paper. Access it at http://think.stedwards.edu/business/writingresources and download APA TEMPLATE, 6th edition as a template to the computer. Use the APA template for the document instead of the Normal template. Using APA Template When a New Document is opened, using the template the document automatically has 1” margins, is double-spaced, and has page numbers at the top right margin in the header. It has all the styles required by APA in the Style Guide. By clicking on different Styles, the writer can change the formatting of words or sentences. Normal automatically has a 0.5 inch paragraph indent, and Block Quote and Reference List are set up to automatically provide the proper formatting. Examples of properly formatted pages can be found at the end of this chapter. The paragraph mark (¶) must be activated from the Toolbar when a New Document is opened from the APA template. The Styles used for APA are accessed by clicking on the arrow on the Styles ribbon. ‘Style’ can also be added to the Quick Access Toolbar Style so that a window showing the Style in use is visible. Clicking on the arrow brings up a list of all possible APA styles. “Normal” is double-spaced, and uses 12 point serif font, specifically......

...indentation), and the appropriate length can vary, but they are typically between 150 and 200 words. Section 2.04 of the APA manual (American Psychological Association [APA], 2010) has additional information about the Abstract. The use of an Abstract is important because many journal readers first read it to determine if the entire article is worth reading. Safety: An Aviation Manager’s Perspective Before getting started, you will notice some things about this paper. First, everything is double-spaced. Second, margins are 1-inch wide on all sides. Third, paragraphs are indented ½ inch. Fourth, the upper left of each page has a running head in all capital letters, and the upper right has the page number. Try to pay attention to all of these details as you look through this paper. Now that those details are out of the way, you should know that this first part of the paper is called the “Introduction” section, yet it does not have a heading that actually says “Introduction”. Instead, the title of the paper is typed at the top of the first page (be sure to center the title, but do not put it in bold). In this section, you would often start with a topic paragraph that introduces the problem under study. The importance of the topic should be pretty clear from the first paragraph of the Introduction. Section 2.05 of the APA manual (APA, 2010) will help give you some ideas about how to write this. Remember to cite your sources......

...authors in your citation. For instance, I often use Mad Libs to teach basic grammar concepts to my university students. After all, sentences like “Who could really [VERB] that there were two [PLURAL NOUN] in space?” (Price & Stern, 2001) end up being a lot more fun than diagramming sentences. In your papers you may not always want to use direct quotations. When you paraphrase, you still need to use a citation. For instance, if I’m thinking about attitudes towards education, I could tell you that Bunt and Yang (2002) examine the Adult Attitude Toward Continuing Education Scale (AACES) to determine its effectiveness. This one only requires a year citation because I mentioned the authors in text, followed the mention directly with what they said, and they are listed on the References page. However, if I tell you that the attitudes of college students are more easily influenced by peers than faculty norms (Milem, 1998), then this one requires the author’s name in a citation because I didn’t mention it in text. Neither requires a page number because they are not direct (word-for-word) quotations. Finally, remember to choose a topic that you like for your paper. You are less likely to get writer’s block when you are interested in what you are writing. Remember also that your instructor has the last word. If your instructor wants to modify these guidelines for your class, then he or she has the right to do so. The Writing Lab is here to help, but nothing......
