Caroline Almuina June 5, 2012 ENC 1101 T/R 3:20PM-5:00PM Scorcher You know, I can’t say that I ever truly listened to Mama when she spoke. It was not that I was ignoring her or that she had nothing useful to say. To be honest, I suppose I just didn’t see the point in listening to her. She always knew just what to say, and I think that itself might have been the problem. It was just… How should I explain this? It was just too played out. Ever since I can remember, she has always had this way of always commenting everything I told her with a quote. The little boy next door with the messy, unmanageable hair can’t keep his dog? “If you love something, set it free,” she told me. That popular girl from school who has a bow for every day of the week does not like the way you talk? “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don't mind.” Mama always made herself sound like a never-ending book of riddles that someone decided to record and play after everything I said. Her words, though always well placed, never really affected me. Growing up, I just thought of her words as piffling quotes. At the age of eleven, I remember marching right up to her and declaring my love for
Nicholas Montessino, the transfer student from California with, as I recall telling her, “the golden blonde curls that was more beautiful than all the freshest and healthiest of sunflowers combined and eyes as blue and luminous as the full moon itself as it holds it’s rightful place in the night sky.” Now that I recall back on that, I can’t blame her for laughing at me as she simply added, “At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet.”
Of course, I rolled my eyes this and pushed her comment aside, rather peeved that she had nothing more to say about my newfound ‘love’ than yet another one of those sayings of hers. “Oh Mama, will you ever be tired of those silly,…...

Essay for English

...unnoticed; he is told he looks ugly with glasses all while his fat cousin Dudley is treated as Petunia and Vernon’s pride and joy. Harry is never treated like one of the family and is even further oppressed by his Aunt Marge who makes him pick food off the floor that she dropped. Each of Matilda and Harry’s authority figures are harsh, unyielding, and oppressive. But through the understanding of how their authority figures are, they themselves learn how not to be towards others because of how they felt under their ruling. Furthermore, to the reader, the narrator tries to come to her defense by describing all the things that could be done to get back at the parents. For example, the narrator says, “If I were a teacher I would cook up some real scorchers for the children of doting parents” (Dahl 2). In this instance, it seems the narrator’s thoughts have permeated Matilda’s because towards the middle of the novel, she actually gets her parents back. Harry Potter takes the same approach of getting even by blowing up his Aunt Marge after her continuous disregard for Harry as a person and a member of the family. In both stories, the child’s inherent authority of what is right and wrong superseded their parental authority. Nevertheless, oppression doesn’t end in the Dursley household for Harry. Upon his return to Hogwarts, he finds everyone in fear from reading newspapers. The threat is said to be a horrific, merciless, convicted killer by the name of Sirius Black. He......

...in the middle of a job. All of these sound like simple things, but they will help us stand out from the local competition. Our marketing strategy in the first year relies largely on face-to-face contact with customers, and word-of-mouth from satisfied clients. In the second year, we will place more ads, and in different papers (such as in the nearby city), as well as trying to generate more word-of-mouth from our customers. In the start-up period we will set up the office, and purchase the necessary lawn care equipment. At the same time, we will spend some time especially on weekends, going around the neighborhood to scout out problem lawns and talk to potential customers. There are at least two weekends coming up that are likely to be scorchers, when potential customers will look outside and think that the last thing they want to do is go out and mow the lawn - these are our best days to canvass the neighborhood, offering a service many do not even realize they want. After that, our challenge will be to effectively communicate experience and skills in lawn care and related work. We will bring a portfolio of some of the nicest lawns we have worked on in the past, and photos of our own lawn, which is more similar to the ones in the neighborhood. We will also be willing to offer a free estimate and cutting for those that are interested in a possible contract. Although some of the free cuttings will not turn out to be long-term customers, our competitive prices and superior......

"What do you need them for?" "Just curiosity. Do you have them?" "Hold on." Robin was organi zed, which counted for a lot at a time like this . " Okay, here we are. I am going to give you the number of races at each temp erature. Let's see, one race at 66 degrees; three races at 67 ; one each at 68 and 69 degrees; two at 70; one each at 72 and 75; two at 76; one each at 79, 80 and 82. That 82 was Tampa. Deconstructing of Two Soap Adverts Waterloo Road and Top Boy

...that they look forward when they have a tough day at work or school this is called diversion. Top Boy Top boy is again another British drama series it was first broadcasted on channel 4 on the 31 October to the 3 November 2011. It is set on a fictional summerhouse housing estate in Hackney the series involves a group of people who live in summerhouse dealing drugs and gang violence. The series also show you peoples live so its not focusing on the main character you get to see how other people live and how the go about their daily lives in summerhouse. I will be deconstructing the Toy boy first series advert which got the TV series off and running. Top boy also includes many celebrities from the like of Bashy, Kano, and Scorcher these celebrities are very well known by teenage due to them being rappers in the UK. Comparing the celebrity endorsement to Waterloo road I would say that Top boy would gain more of an audience because they have more than one celebrity and it’s a higher chance that people will know the celebrities in Top boy then the celebrity in Waterloo road. Top boys target audience will be aim towards again teenagers 16+ and adults 20+. The series shows life in East London and how growing up in a rough areas can be hard and how young teens are fed into drugs and gangs, also teenagers can relate to Top boy because there are a few character in the series that are young and are involved in drugs so teenagers who do this in their daily life can......

Perception of Screamo Music to the Spiriual Side of Youth

...songs they created continue to influence the growth of rock. Socially conscious music was not to typify the decade, however the seventies was to become what writer Tom Wolfe as they quoted called “The Me Decade” a period not of throbbing social consciousness but rather of obsession with self, with success, with acquisitions. Moreover, The list of rock’s progenies continue into the mid eighties to early nineties: New wave, essentially a cleaned – up, middle class, Americanization of punk and emo; typified by blonde; reggae; black urban music attempted to replace street fighting with dancing; world beat, truly international music, sort of Afro – Latino – Caribbean – influenced – pop – rock as popularizes by the Stray Cats Jason, and the scorchers, and the blasters that preserves country music down-home town while capturing the new energy of hard rock. In the 1990’s another subgenre of rock had surface in the world of music. Leeds (2005) says you can call it “punk” or “metalcore,” “emo-hardcore” or plain old “hardcore.” You can also call it “screamo,” Screamo is a genre of music which evolved from hardcore punk and emo in the early 1990s. The term "screamo" was initially applied to a more aggressive offshoot of emo. He added that by 2002, the genre name drifted into the music press, especially in the journalism of Jim DeRogatis and Andy Greenwald. "Screamo" began to describe a different, much slower and less dissonant style that borrowed from punk rock. These new bands......

San Diego Wild Animal Park

...will visit the park. During the winter, the ratio is down as normally 2,000 people will visit. Although it's much colder in the winter, the park is less frequent with people looking to see the animals the park offers. You can find the animal park 32 miles north of Escondido in San Diego. The park is in a peaceful area, which makes things a lot better for the animals that live there. When visiting in the summer, it's a great idea to walk a while, then take the railway. After you have took the railway a bit, you can walk some more. It's also good to take plenty of sunscreen with you as well, as summer at the park can get very hot. Water is great as well, simply because the summer in California can be a bit of a scorcher. The San Diego Wild Animal Park is ran by the San Diego Zoological Society. The society also runs the San Diego Zoo, which is one of the most popular animal parks in the entire world. With the park and the zoo, the society does more than its part to bring the best of seeing the animals to you. The next time you are in San Diego or if you are visiting for the first time, the Wild Animal Park is a great place to visit. You can check out some truly endangered species and learn more about the types of animals that you'll see in this once in a lifetime opportunity....

Global Warming

...in inner cities, have lower-than-average incomes, and are sick or elderly. Because heat waves seem less threatening than more-dramatic weather phenomena, such as tornadoes or thunderstorms, people don't feel an immediate need to run for cover and therefore adopt a "wait-it-out" mentality, he notes. Heat waves strike broad regions, rather than the limited swaths directly influenced by thunderstorms or tornadoes. Yet because heat waves are more easily predicted and often build slowly many deaths that result from them are preventable, says Karen E. Smoley-Tomic of the University of Alberta in Edmonton. The disparate results of two recent heat waves that struck Chicago seem to bolster that contention. Heat-related deaths during the first scorcher in July 1995 claimed 739 Chicago residents--more than double the number that died in the great Chicago Fire of 1871. Most victims were elderly and poor, lived in the heart of the city, and either had no air conditioning or couldn't afford to turn it on. In some areas of the city, fear of crime deterred some people from opening their windows. Statistical analyses later showed that the residents at greatest risk for dying lived alone and were socially isolated. After 1995, Chicago instituted a citywide plan to check on elderly residents and provide access to air-conditioned areas in schools. Those plans appear to have paid off in 1999, when a midsummer heat wave claimed only about 110 Chicagoans. The peak heat and humidity during that......

The Halo Effect Book Reivew

...evaluate a piece of work written by a subject based on their attractiveness. Meaning, would a person grade the same piece of work differently based solely on the looks of the writer? These studies, and others, have gone on to prove over and over the existence of the halo effect and its profound effect on the subconscious mind. In the business world, marketing departments worldwide toil day and night to try and capture the halo effect. Whether in the launch of a new product, or in crisis management of a bad one, the halo effect can be used successfully in business when used properly. Several noteworthy articles in the business world have continued to demonstrate the halo effect. One is an the article in the Harvard Business Review by Melvin Scorcher and James Brant, which describes how top-level employees at companies often mistakenly use the halo effect in their hiring decisions. There are also many books and papers written about the subject, which will be covered in more detail in this paper, as well as the business approach to the Halo Effect. Objectives Now that the history and definition of the halo effect have been defined, it is time to turn to the objectives of this literature review. It is important that studies and works on both sides of the halo effect are reviewed. This will be the only way to determine if the research question is even valid and if so, can it be answered properly. This paper will attempt to review works from both sides in order to remain impartial......

Matilda

...Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful. Some parents go further. They become so blinded by adoration they manage to convince themselves their child has qualities of genius. Well, there is nothing very wrong with all this. It's the way of the world. It is only when the parents begin telling us about the brilliance of their own revolting offspring, that we start shouting, "Bring us a basin! We're going to be sick!" School teachers suffer a good deal from having to listen to this sort of twaddle from proud parents, but they usually get their own back when the time comes to write the end-of-term reports. If I were a teacher I would cook up some real scorchers for the children of doting parents. "Your son Maximilian", I would write, "is a total wash-out. I hope you have a family business you can push him into when he leaves school because he sure as heck won't get a job anywhere else." Or if I were feeling lyrical that day, I might write, "It is a curious truth that grasshoppers have their hearing-organs in the sides of the abdomen. Your daughter Vanessa, judging by what she's learnt this term, has no hearing-organs at all." I might even delve deeper into natural history and say, "The periodical cicada spends six years as a grub underground, and no more than six days as a free creature of sunlight and air. Your son Wilfred has spent six years as a grub in this school and we are still......
