APA Manual and Recent Updates

Section 4

This section of the Library Handbook addresses how to cite recourses used in the body and the reference list of your document using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Common examples for parenthetical text citations, citing direct quotes, and reference citations in the reference list are provided, but for a more comprehensive list, see the APA manual (6th ed.).

Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the use of another person’s ideas or words without giving them the proper credit. Plagiarism can occur when you use someone else’s exact words without giving them credit, taking credit for someone else’s ideas, or even presenting your own past work as a new idea. Academic institutions take both intentional and unintentional plagiarism seriously, and it can be grounds for dismissal. According to the APA manual (6th ed.), the best method of avoiding plagiarism is to cite the ideas, theories, and research that directly influenced your work, cite key background information, information that may support or dispute your theory or hypothesis, or offer critical definitions or data (p. 169). Document all facts and figures that are not common knowledge. For journal articles and class assignments, APA recommends using one or two of the most representative sources for each key point, but for the literature review for a dissertation, you should include a more exhaustive list of citations. See APA (6th ed.), pp. 15-16 for more information.

Though, the province is categorized as economically poor, the diocese still have to claw her way to fulfill the demands of a growing Christian population. This act was introduced in order to counter the increasing amount of recusants and seminary priests that were in England yet remained unpunished. Interpretation C provides a different outlook on numbers and strengths of recusants in England. The passage puts forth the thesis that the Jesuit and seminary priests were too few in number and had a disproportional spread about the country, the information provided in this passage can help to explain why Catholic plots such as that mentioned in passage B failed. Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation by Parker J. Palmer,

...but I am still working through the fine-tuning of that calling. In other words, is God calling me to work as a pastor, missionary, youth minister, teacher, or a music worship leader? My seminary experience is helping me figure this out. However, I feel I am called to all of the above in some capacity. Regardless, of the vocational outcome the only thing I can control today is my relationship with God. I appreciate the words Palmer uses to address this and I feel it resonates my own identity. God asks us to only honor our created nature, which means our limits as well as potentials (Palmer 50). My first year of seminary has afforded me to explore what my limits are. It is obvious that I cannot do everything like I Smith 2 used to do when I was younger. Even then, I only thought I could do everything. However, I am in the process of learning what my potentials are. How am I learning this? My nature is finally matched with Gods nature and my vocation is as well. In conclusion, I enjoyed the clear honest approach that Palmer uses and the challenges he brings to the table. I hope to spend more time throughout the summer exploring this book in greater detail and meditating on the truths that are within it. I found it interesting that he dropped out of Union Theological Seminary and went to California Berkley in San Francisco where he earned a Ph.D. in Sociology....

Now I understand that the “Rule of Life” assignment is more than just an assignment but actually a diagram of my plan of action with purpose and meaning behind it. The basic question raised by Black in this study was whether students prioritized discipleship training objectives for youth in the same way as full-time ministers in the field. Using the Spearman rho correlation coefficient, Black found the correlations of rankings generated by students and ministers of the ten items for each of five categories were as follows: Personal Ministry, 0.915; Christian Theology and Baptist Doctrine, 0.867; Christian Ethics, 0.939; Baptist Heritage, 0.939; and Church Polity and Organization, 0.927.
