Servant Leadership: A Review and Synthesis

Servant leadership is positioned as a new field of research for leadership scholars. This review deals with the historical background of servant leadership, its key characteristics, the available measurement tools, and the results of relevant studies that have been conducted so far. An overall conceptual model of servant leadership is presented. It is argued that leaders who combine their motivation to lead with a need to serve display servant leadership. Personal characteristics and culture are positioned alongside the motivational dimension. ...Servant Leadership (Mark 10:45) is modeled after the attributes of Jesus Christ and energized to action by the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ, God's Son, was the ultimate example of a leader who took on the form of a servant and humbled himself even to death on the cross in order to fulfill His Father's redemptive plan for humanity. His example far surpasses the attempts Christian leaders make today unless they apply Philippians 2:5 to their lives: "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." There are many seminars and conferences offered consistently throughout the country that address the qualities leaders need to be successful in business or in life in general. Leadership skills such as organization, planning, visionary techniques, relationship management strategies and assertiveness training are all emphasized as being crucial. Even though there are important skills to be learned in order to succeed in life, an interesting paradox is drawn between the qualities of a Christian leader and the worldly leader. Leaders often get a bad reputation for their means of achieving success. ...Servant Leadership Servant Leadership is not a leadership style but a state of being. The decision to embark on the mission of Servant Leadership cannot be relegated only to the office. If fully committed to being successful, a servant-leader will embrace all the components needed to be a servant and a leader in every aspect of their life. In this paper, I will explore the origins of Servant Leadership, how it can be implemented to build a successful “leader”, and how Servant Leadership effects employee satisfaction. I also found that Servant Leadership is often synonymous with some sort of religious foundation. Many of the articles I read likened Servant Leadership to religious models. I personally found it difficult to connect with this interpretation, even though I see the relationships, so I chose instead to make a broader “spiritual” connection that would appeal to the “non-believer”. By applying the principals of Servant Leadership to all aspects of one’s life, I believe, true satisfaction and success is possible. What is Servant Leadership? Before even taking this class, I have been interested in the thoughts and theories of Robert Greenleaf who started the beginnings of Servant Leadership. Servant Leadership is the theory of leadership that I want to model my leadership style around. This short quotation, a fragment of a sentence from an essay written in 1970, captures the essence of servant-leadership theory. A simple, yet profound and powerful concept, it has spawned countless journal articles, books and multimedia productions in the 35 years since its introduction. So what is servant leadership? The very notion of a servant as leader, or “servant-leadership” as it has come to be known, is purposefully oxymoronic and arresting in nature. The theory’s originator, Robert K. When proper leadership is in place it is a benefit to both the organization and the individual leader. Summary There are several steps that management can take to create a positive working environment, however, there needs to be steady and firm leadership in place in order to make management a success. There are four "management levers" that help shape the way a group works, and there are four "leadership levers" that are important for a leader to have in order to provide leadership to a group.
