Afternoon, today’s topic will be engaging on the relationship between social stratification or socio-economic status and schooling.

Let’s begin by taking a look at SES (socio-economic status) and what it means the total measure of an individual's or family’s economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. Examples of High SES include doctors, lawyers and engineers. Examples of low SES include cleaners, caretakers and waiters. You get the idea.

Now the main issue with social stratification in Australia is that it is often overlooked. We live in a “meritocratic” society where the idea of social advancement is determined by ability, talent and hard work rather than a right of birth. However ‘Statistically speaking the best advice we can give a poor child to get ahead through education is to choose richer parents’ (Connell 1993p 22). Australians intrinsically consider their home as the land of the ‘fair go’ however it is this discourse that reject and hide the underlying class structures and fail to realise that social privilege is often maintained and it is not an even playing field.

For the purpose of this presentation we take the Weber ideology that Social Stratification is not entirely determined by wealth, as class levels are formed through the interaction of status (honour prestige and religion) and political power (affiliations and networks) as well. Weber elaborated on this to develop the concept of “life chances” – Simply the opportunities an individual is given for achieving economic prosperity. This becomes significant to education in that his ideas force us to think about how an individual’s life chances influence their educational experience and levels of educational success. Although that is not to say that class is completely determining, even though it plays a significant role in the lives of…...

Exporting Wine to Se Asia

...Exporting Oregon Wines to SE Asia With the increasing popularity of Oregon wines, especially its Pinot Noir, state wineries are looking abroad to new markets to expand their reach and increase sales. One of those new emerging markets is Southeast Asia, which consists of Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. For the purpose of this paper I have left out Laos, Burma, and Cambodia because of import restrictions and poor demand for imported wines. In 2010, Oregon saw an increase in the number of wine cases exported to 59,537 from 35,664 in 2009. As the fourth largest wine producing state, Oregon is still far behind California, the largest US exporter of wines at 90%. Still the emergence of New World wines, like those in Oregon, continues to increase around the world, and SE Asia is a new and expanding market that has taken a liking to these wines, especially among the affluent. Based on research, this paper will break down by country the perceptions, sociocultural acceptance, competition, taxation and restrictions, distribution channels, and marketing strategies that could be used to introduce Oregon wines. Vietnam In Vietnam, wine is beginning to make inroads with the local peoples in a country where beer and spirits have been the mainstay since the Vietnam War. It saw an increase in US wine imports of 234% between 2010 and 2011 accounting for over $18 million in sales. Most of the wine consumed in the country is by foreigners...

Se Habla Espanol

...Se Habla Espanol. Student: Gonzalo Gomez. Professor: Dorothy, Valentine. Course Title: English Composition April 17, 2013 “ Se Habla Espanol” is one of the best essays I have read in my life time because I can relate a lot to it. This essay was written by Tanya Maria Barrientos. This essay will help you see the struggles she had to over come while growing up in The United States and not speaking Spanish her native Language. Mrs Barrientos was born in Guatemala and was raised in El Paso TX. When she was 3 years old her family brought her to The United States. Her parents decided that they were only going to speak English in her household. Her parents had decided that the only way her and her brother could fit-in in the Anglo society was by only speaking English regardless of their Hispanic appearance. She wrote about a time when her parents took her one week late to school because they were on vacation. “At the school's office the registrar frowned when they arrived.” She told them “ you people. Your children are always behind, and you have the nerve to bring them late?” I personally been through that similar situation during my school years while growing up. I love her mothers response when she says “ My children will be at the top of their classes in two weeks.” I bet that took the registrar off track. Since she was young she thought that speaking Spanish meant various things. One of the things was that Spanish meant being poor. Another thing was that it......

Ses Indicators

...SES Indicators There are 126 racial and ethnic categories in the US (Winker, 2004). It is a well-recognized fact that many racial and ethnic minorities face unique health challenges and suffer from poorer health outcomes (Dorsey, 2011). The importance of adequately reporting and collecting relevant SES parameters, including race and ethnicity is evident. However, the question of how to properly categorize, measure, and report some of these parameters has been in the center of discussion for some time. In accordance with the Affordable Care Act, The department of Health and Human Services (HHS) came up with the new data standards for the collection of race, ethnicity, sex, primary language, and disability status. It is required by law that these standards be used in all the national population health surveys (Dorsey, 2011). The new standards have been in use since November 2011, and their stated purpose is to “understand the causes of health disparities, design effective responses, and evaluate progress in decreasing health disparities” (Dorsey, 2011). With the deepening social disparities and the effect they have on the nation’s health, it is essential to have a well-established system of documentation. It is also important for the researchers to select and appropriately measure all the indicators relevant for their study. HHS’s new data standards include fourteen racial and five ethnic categories, with the option to include more than one category within each group. ......

...[ 39 ] Journal of European Industrial Training 21/2 [1997] 39–50 © MCB University Press [ISSN 0309-0590] Training, development, education and learning: different or the same? Thomas N. Garavan Lecturer, Department of Personnel and Employment Relations, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland Attempts to discuss the concepts of training, development, education and learning with regard to employees in terms of their substantive differences. Discusses how these concepts have evolved historically within human resource management and development (HRM/D) literature. Provides an analysis of how alternative models of HRM/D may influence the meaning given to these concepts in an organizational context. Concludes that it is perhaps more appropriate to view training, development and education as an integrated whole with the concept of learning as the glue which holds them together. Introduction The training, development and education of employees at all levels within organizations is now considered a vital component in maintaining competitiveness in the international arena. It is also of some significance within the human resource management (HRM) and development (HRD) literature. If one accepts a competitive market perspective on HRM/D then a central notion is the view that training, development and education strategies are key means by which the inefficiencies of the employment relationship can be reduced and a closer approximation to......

Ses Reponse

...Perspectives of Deviance Paper McKayla L. Murphy Ohio Christian University 10/19/2014 SES Response Socioeconomic status (SES) is a word used to describe a person’s social location based on all three dimensions of the stratification system. Those three dimensions are wealth, prestige, and power. Wealth is people’s economic assets and here in the U.S. our income plays apart in what class we are ranked in. Prestige is the social esteem or honor that is accorded to particular people by others, and here in the U.S. our occupation plays a part in it. Power is a social relationship in which people are able to realize their will, even against the resistance of others, and in the U.S. it can come from wealth, status, or other sources. All three apply to me and my lifestyle. I rank in the class system. This system is where the boundaries between classes are more permeable, a person’s socioeconomic position depends more on achievement, and there are fairly frequent opportunities to change social position. This affects my lifestyle, by me getting a higher education and getting far in life. My family was always the lower class until my mother and father both graduated college. I never want my children to feel the way my parents did as children. I want to give them the life my parents gave me and be brought up in the Lord. References Sullivan, T. J. (2001). Affirmative Action with Regards to Marriage

... Affirmative action with regards to marriage. Name: Institution: Date: A lot of people today have used affirmative action as a way of obtaining special privileges by calling them “rights” – particularly, “equal rights”. Affirmative quotas have notably been seen in local political campaigns through demands that the scope of marriage should be adjusted to suit different conditions in marriage including same sex marriage, interracial marriages and single parenting. When goals in affirmative action are not met, the burden of showing evidence that there was no discrimination against women and minorities lies with the employers in a job recruiting exercise for example. The people who advocate for these “rights” don’t have the burden of proof to elaborately show there was no discrimination in the exercise whatsoever. In many countries, minorities have always outperformed the majority even when there was no way of discriminating against them. Marriage has ever been recognized as the binding of a man and woman since. A vast range of laws have, however, come up in regard to marriage. All arising from disparities resultant from the union of man and woman. These disparities, however, arise naturally and affirmative policies should be developed for people who engage in behaviors that occur naturally and are inevitable. Research reveals that it is normal for differences between people of the same sex to occur, thus, everyone need laws that protect them whatsoever the case. Families......

Education

...(M.phil Education (2014-16)) INTRODUCTION Before discussing the concept of cost of education, it is necessary to distinguish between the terms, ‘expenditure’ on education and ‘costs’ of education which are often synonymously used. That part of expenditure which has some relationship with the production process and the output only can be referred to as costs. A major part of costs are a part of expenditure but not vice versa. While costs can include imputed items like opportunity costs, generally expenditure does not include such things. Further expenditure can be expressed only in monetary terms, while costs can be expressed in monetary as well as in real or physical terms. Statistics on costs of education are of utmost importance for educational planning. Estimates of costs are essential for estimating resources required for educational sector and for various sub – sectors of education. They also help us in understanding whether resources allocated to education reflect optimal level or not and within education whether resources are optimally allocated between different layers of education. The statistics on costs of education also are themselves indicative of efficiency of educational system, besides facilitating one to find out the cost effectiveness or cost- benefit ratio of the educational system as a whole and of the different levels of the system. For modern welfare governments whose one of the main objectives is equity, analysis of costs of education do help......

...English Composition “Se Habla Espanol” Summary and Personal Response In the essay "Se Habla Espanol" by Tanya Maria Barrientos, she identifies her struggles of being a Latina native who does not speak the language. From Guatemala, Tanya came to the United States at three years old, in 1963, with her family and gave up communicating in Spanish quickly. Her parents determined that their children would only speak, read, and write English to fit into what they called the “Anglo Society” (Barrientos, 2011). In her younger years, Tanya herself believed that if she fit in with this society, she could escape the Spanish stereotypes. At sixteen, Tanya’s father decided to send her to Mexico to help her see that being called Mexican was not an insult but more of an honor. Tanya was reluctant to go, but when she did, she found out that she loved the environment and culture. Sending her to Mexico gave her a new sense of pride that she didn't exactly know how to sustain. The author opens the essay registering for a Spanish class for the sixth time. According to Tanya in the wake of expressing her last name, she naturally heard that snippet of delay from the other man on the telephone. She reveals how she feels when people see her or hear her last name, they automatically expect her to speak Spanish. Tanya and her family came to the United States in 1963. Immediately at the age of three both of her parents decided that their children would defy the odds of their Guatemalan culture and...
