Information Security Threat Mitigation

...Information Security Threats Mitigation By Francis Nsofwa Mubanga Keller Graduate School of Management Devry University Professor Sandra Kirkland SE572 July 14th, 2011  Table of Contents Introduction 1 Steps 1 Denial-of-Service attacks (DoS) 1 Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks (DDoS) 1 Masquerading and IP Spoofing attacks 2 Smurf attacks 2 Land .c attacks 2 Man-in-the-Middle attacks 3 Conclusion 3 References 4 Introduction Our company faces the largest information security threat and we need to take steps to mitigate the risks associated with each one of them. Steps Denial-of-Service attacks (DoS) We will analyze the attack as best as we can and implement the correct defense. We will ask ourselves if there are any common packet signatures that are easy to filter against. We will ask ourselves if all attackers hitting a single target if they can be sacrificed. We will also need to find out as to which network the attack is coming from, and if we can verify it (remember that spoofed packets can come from anywhere, including our own network). Once we’ve found a reasonable match for the attack, pass the filters to our upstream provider(s) and seek their help getting them propagated outwards. We will need to make sure we filter or redirect traffic with a minimum amount of actual downtime (Kaeo, 2004). Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks (DDoS) CluB: a Cluster-Based architecture is the method we will use to prevent DDoS......

... 09/17/2012 English 1101 A common children’s cartoon, the smurfs. The smurfs was on television on 1981. The smurfs is a popular cartoon because it’s funny in a unique way and it’s one of those cartoons that get children’s attention. One of the episodes called the smurphony, that episode was a terrific one because it had a lesson that kids could learn by watching the episode. The first part was about the 100 smurfs trying to make music but one of the smurfs was forbidden to play the music with them. He wasn’t able to play the correct note and he was mad that he can’t play the note with them. The smurf was walking and talking to himself about how mad he is and an old man who doesn’t like the smurfs heard him, so he took advantage of this. He made him a music instrument and told him if he used this instrument he will be able to play the music with them. After that the smurf went to the smurfs and started to play the note to them to show them that he got better, however the instrument was a magic instrument that makes people sleep or faint when they listen to it. The smurf felt so bad because all of smurfs fainted after he played the note. Then the smurf went back to the old man and tried to make him stop that, and while they were running after each other the old man was about to fall. He asked the smurf to help him out but he didn’t and the smurf went back to try to wake the smurfs up. So he started to play the note with his old instrument and finally they......

...ISP for network access. The ISP most often initiates a “null route” as to protect other customers and the traffic intended for the victim is funneled into the trash. The problem with this is that it also routed legitimate business into the trash as well. . A company has a couple of options for protection, one of which is “SYN Cookies” which tracks TSP connections. Another is reverse proxy, which sort of acts like guard at the door of an apartment building, deciding which visitors are allowed to into the building. By deploying many guards the traffic is sent all different directions thus lessening the possibility of an overload. Conclusion So as we can see there are quite a few DoS attacks to protect yourself from like, a “Smurf Attack”, “SYN Flood”, “Teardrop Attack”, “Low-rate Attack”, and Peer-to-peer attacks. Most defense mechanisms focus on the IPS. A DDS can block connection based DoS attacks, protocol attacks, and rate-based attacks. The fact of the matter here is to make sure your computers, network, and internet are all protected by the most up-to-date virus software and a very secure firewall. Along with these DoS prevention tips your systems can be secure and your information protected....

...unrecoverable revenue associated with site downtime and possible compromise of sensitive confidential data. It is imperative today’s corporate network is configured and prepared to protect itself from external cyber-attacks. Since there is no 100% method to stop external cyber-attacks, attention to detail must be made in regards to proper configuration of the network to include state of the art hardware and software. To include current security patches for both software and hardware respectively. Additionally, hardware and software measures will be limited in their effectiveness without network policies and techniques to protect against external cyber-attacks such as Denial of Service, Distributed Denial of Service, Masquerading and IP Spoofing, Smurf Attacks, Land c Attacks, and Man-in-the-Middle attacks. In close coordination with our IS team engineers and IT network director an approved plan has been incorporated to minimize risk of an effective cyber-attack on our network. Specifically this plan covers a comprehensive review of current network design and interdependencies, Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Operating Procedures, detailed analysis of every program, service, host, router, switch to include interaction between these services and resources. Testing current system and policies by a certified third party security consultant on a not to interfere basis will provide invaluable insight on our network. A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS)......

Yo Is Nice for Smurfs

...Philippe Kechichian Food and Beverage What is beer? “Beer is produced by the saccharification of starch and fermentation of the resulting sugar. The starch and saccharification enzymes are often derived from malted cereal grains; most commonly malted barley and malted wheat. Un-malted maize and rice are widely used adjuncts to lighten the flavour because of their lower cost. The preparation of beer is called brewing. Most beer is flavoured with hops, which add bitterness and act as a natural preservative, though other flavourings such as herbs or fruit may occasionally be included.” Beer definition Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world and the third-most drink overall after water and tea. The strength of beer is usually around 4% to 6% alcohol by volume although it may vary between 0.5% (dealcoholized) and 20%. Beer forms part of the culture of beer-drinking nations and is associated with social traditions such as beer festivals, as well as a rich pub culture, involving activities like pub crawling and pub games such as billiards. History The history of beer is linked with the one of its components and with the technological advances. The first cultures of cereals, especially the barley and wheat, were discovered in Mesopotamia and dated at around 8000 years before J.-C. Historians think beer was discovered 6000 years before J.-C. The first real proofs of its existence were discovered in the province of Sumer and are back to the 4th......

...accomplished by providing fabricated information about a person’s or host’s identity to obtain unauthorized access to a system. By enabling packet filters at the entry and exit points of your networks you can best guard against spoofing. The external entry point filters should explicitly deny any inbound packets that perceive to derive from a host that is in the internal network. The internal exit point filters should permit only outbound packets that originate from a host within the internal network. (El-Moussa, 2007) An effective instrument that can alert you during a Smurf attacks is to configure filters that would permit ICMP echo requests/replies aiming at Smurf attacks. By making logs and observing this traffic, it will be possible to detect when this type of attack is in progress. Equally, distributing firewall functionality and intrusion detection allows for the detection and defence of an attack. To detect a Smurf attack active routers count how many broadcast ICMP Ping packets have been received from either the same client or from the same router. . (El-Moussa, 2007) The land.c attack is used to launch DoS attacks against various TCP implementations. IDS implementations can usually detect land.c attacks by watching for IP packets that have a source IP address identical to the destination address. This is known as an impossible IP packet. Though a network-based IDS can sense this kind of packet and cause an alarm, but it will not stop the packet from getting to its......

By Ankit Fadia Ankit@bol.net.in __________________________________________________________________________ Date Released: 25th June 2001 DOS Attacks or Denial Of Services Attack have become very common amongst Hackers who use them as a path to fame and respect in the underground groups of the Internet. Denial of Service Attacks basically means denying valid Internet and Network users from using the services of the target network or server. It basically means, launching an attack, which will temporarily make the services, offered by the Network unusable by legitimate users. In others words one can describe a DOS attack, saying that a DOS attack is one in which you clog up so much memory on the target system that it cannot serve legitimate users. Or you send the target system data packets, which cannot be handled by it and thus causes it to either crash, reboot or more commonly deny services to legitimate users. DOS Attacks are of the following different types-: 1. Those that exploit vulnerabilities in the TCP/IP protocols suite. 2. Those that exploit vulnerabilities in the Ipv4 implementation. 3 There are also some brute force attacks, which try to use up all resources of the target system and the services unusable. make Before I go on...

Should You Listen to the Customer?

...businesses where you should not listen to the customer? What about his Smurf comment? Henry don’t want to take in consideration client feedback because of: - His business activate in a domain where the quality of the shows generate new clients. Henry believe in his staff and their quality. Dance members are talent people which can generate best shows and also assure a profitability. - In Henry opinion , listen to the customers is not related to the direct activity (dance shows ). Delacroix company wants to go on a new road of business: film and media. So, he wants new channels of distribution. It is possible after they will enter on this channels to be oriented to direct client feedback. - He is very confident in his business and the way of do it. In my opinion I don’t think in business which don’t need customer feedback, regardless of the aria (sector) of their activity (public or private). A business is always oriented to clients, because clients will generate revenues and objectives for development. But we can have some type of business where client feedback is not directly oriented to products which the company offer and is oriented to services who offer this product. (by example: in a hospital you need an x ray. The x ray is the product, but depends how the hospital offer. You can wait on a pacient list or you can call and they tell you when to came to “offer the service”), Related to Smurfs affirmation, Henry wanted to be determined (trenchant) , trying to......

How to Get Out of a Bad Date

...see each other in real life because not everything seems like his profile picture or his bio. But we are very stubborn woman and we always learn the hard way. Well that was what happened to me and it starts with when we both agreed to finally meet. The day when I met him in person I seriously needed to reevaluate everything and say, “On second thought, I’m not really into online dating anymore”. Before my eyes was a man about four feet seven, and I am a five feet eight female, the irony is real. I surely couldn’t tell him in the face that he was a lying, ugly, and old man when it clearly said in his bio he was 24, and I am 21 YEAR OLD! In his profile picture he had a resemblance of Channing Tatum, but here in front of me he resembles papa smurf. I’m no model but I have to admit, I am easy on the eyes, with my blonde silky hair, and charming personality, but enough about me and my gracious good looks. He then motions for me to go inside the restaurant we are meeting at, which is McDonalds by the way, and of course he picked it. And the creepiest part, he couldn’t stop staring at me, and he had some sort of allergies which had him sneezing every five minutes, and I couldn’t eat my cheeseburger in peace. He kept saying jokes that were old as his soul and I kept awkwardly chuckling. That was it, I needed to figure out my game plan, my list of excuses, and a well thought out exit on how to get out of this bad date....

Indian's Fight to Control Mehamphetamine

...medicines containing pseudoephedrine. In addition, the system also limits and tracks the amounts purchased. This law would only prevent previous offenders from purchasing pseudoephedrine. It would not stop the groups of individuals called smurfs that are doing the purchasing for methamphetamine offenders. Another approach to the issue is to make over-the-counter medicines containing pseudoephedrine a prescription-only drug for all of Indiana. This approach would help to control the purchasing of pseudoephedrine by methamphetamine offenders and the groups called smurfs who are contributing to an already enormous amount of problems. Now, there are smurfs contributing to the problem that need consideration when making changes to the laws for methamphetamine. MiddelKamp, B. (2015, February 19). “State Senator Randy Head said cooks hire multiple people to go into stores to buy the legal limits that way, the system can’t restrict purchases if they’re made by different people”. These groups are not assisting in the making of methamphetamine, but they are just as responsible. As a result, they need held accountable for their hand in the horrors of Indiana’s methamphetamine problems. By only restricting previous offenders these groups, calling themselves smurfs will continue to do the buying of pseudoephedrine for methamphetamine cooks. In other words, helping continue the problems of methamphetamine in Indiana’s Wabash Valley. No child should be born into this world screaming......

...farming on the shores of Stewart Island and an extensive forest farm on the North Island’s east coast. BP New Zealand took a 60% interest in Europa in 1972. The combined group became New Zealand’s largest marketer of petroleum products. The two companies continued to operate independently with two separate brands until 1989. On the world stage oil prices were extremely volatile, sky rocketing from US$2.90 in early 1973 to US$35 by 1979. At this point New Zealand introduced car less days, restricted service station hours and an 80kph speed limited. There were more changes in store for BP and the industry in the 1980s, with unleaded petrol, CNG and LPG becoming available to New Zealand drivers. 1981 saw the introduction of ‘Service with a Smurf’, as people throughout New Zealand got caught up in ‘Smurfmania’ collecting the little blue figures from BP stations. The New Zealand oil industry was deregulated in 1988. The following year the Europa brand was replaced with the BP shield. BP imagery changed again in recent years with the introduction of the BP Helios, which we see today from 2001. In 1999, BP became the first oil company in New Zealand to introduce service stations with solar powered canopies above the forecourt, there are 17 such service stations operating around the country today. Today, BP New Zealand has around 300 service stations throughout New Zealand and employs over 1700 people. ...

Communicating and Collaborating Effectively

...I think I will have many obstacles to overcome when it comes to being successful during this course.  As a working professional I think everyone can relate to the demanding schedules of a 9-5 job and career that certainly extends beyond the boundaries of just the office.  More often than not I find myself working from home after my son is asleep or catching up on work during the weekends in order to make deadlines in time.  In addition to the demands of a full time career, I also have my family that is the most important focus in my entire life.  Family time takes place after work, on the weekends going out to dinner or taking our son to see a Smurf movie but also still finding time to connect with my wife and spend time with her as well.  Juggling these things would be hard enough on its own but to make things even heavier I also have further obligations like volunteering coaching high school baseball and playing baseball on Sundays in a men's recreational team.  I try squeeze things like working out during my lunch time at the office so that helps but needless to say all together my life is pretty hectic.  With this being said I think my biggest obstacle will be finding a way to make school my priority while not taking the quality of time I spend on the other areas in my life.  I have given a lot of thought as to how I may be able to accomplish this and I really believe that as long as I stay focused, structured, and driven at all my task then I should be able to continue......

Denial of Service Attacks in Network Security

...part of normal TCP three-way handshake to exhaust the victim’s resources. When client ask for service ,it sends TCP SYN message to the server and server replies by sending SYN-ACK message and waits for client to send ACK message. At this state, server allocates the certain memory to store the information from the client. And it will not be released unless server gets ACK message from the client. Now the malicious client will not send ACK message and this process will occur in every single port and since it will repond to all the requests ,the server will run out of memory which was assigned for half-open connection. ICMP smurf flooding: ICMP packets are used to test if the computer is responding in a network. The computer to be tested is pinged by sending ICMP packets by another computer and the computer will reply by sending ICMP echo reply packets. In ICMP smurf flooding attack the victim is flooded with tons of spoofed ICMP packets which can exhaust the computer by using up all the resources and the victim will no longer be able to provide its service. An attacker sends an ICMP packets with the victim’s IP address as a source address and remote network’s IP address as a destination address. The computers on the remote network will reply with the ICMP echo reply packets to the victim and if there is no good security system like firewall to block the forged packets then the victim’s resources may get exhausted and denial of service will occur. UDP Flooding: An......
