Sequel Installment

Although Pixar Animation Studios have resisted the temptation in making instalments among their films, producers have failed to live up to their stand. Toy Story, the ground breaking, blockbuster animated film launched in 1995, took nearly four years to finally have its sequel, the Toy Story 2 in 1999. Eleven years after the second instalment, Toy Story launched its third film in the series, the Toy Story 3 in 2010. All three sequels have made it to the lime light as one of the top grossing films in the history of animated films. Aside from the Toy Story movies, Disney-Pixar have also produced a number of successful installment movies like Cars, Monsters Inc., and the upcoming sequel of Finding Nemo (Finding Dory).

In the course of time, film instalments have been an indication of opportunity to the animation company. More installments, means another profit generating loop for Pixar and an opportunity of growth to the company’s brand awareness to the general audience.

Genre Variations & Character Diversity

Pixar have been the Holy Grail of computer generated imagery films, and since its commencement in 1975, it has been known to produce quality child and family oriented pictures. Movies like Wall E, Toy Story, Cars, Ratatouille, and other films have been positioned to distinct male characters. In the film industry, variations in genres and diversity in character creation are crucial to maintain interest among audiences.

In the last seventeen years of Pixar, films have revolved on alpha-male characters until the launch of “Brave”, a film about a Scottish princess named Merida who defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire to not be betrothed. In fact, this organization is the pioneer in the computer-animated technology with its release of Toy Story in 1995, and has established itself as a creative company (Ed Catmull, 2008). Bill Capodagli and Lynn Jackson have decided to write the book, Innovate the Pixar way, which provides “business lessons from the world’s most creative corporate playground”, being Pixar. When asking Ed Catmull, cofounder of Pixar and the president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, in a Harvard Business Review paper about how to foster creativity in his organization, three main points are raised; Culture, leadership and collaboration. In the book under our analysis, the same points are raised. However, the authors believe that the key factor of Pixar’s great creativity is the fact that everyone thinks like a child and acts like a child within the organization. Although he was not a good artist, Catmull used his physics and computer science skills to start creating 3-D computer animations, unintentionally starting his career as an animator. Catmull got the opportunity to use his animation skills under George Lucas, reinventing the technology for creating movies. In 2006, Walt Disney acquired Pixar, but before we get to all of that, let us start at the beginning. Before Pixar, there was Lucas Films. Societal Expectations

...Societal expectations for acceptance. The way individuals choose to carry themselves in everyday life is affected by societal expectations. These societal expectations are sort of an unofficial guideline by which individuals live their lives. Whether it’s gender roles or just wanting to be accepted by others, people feel the need to “live” according to these guidelines. As time progresses so do the “guidelines” and if the individuals cannot keep up with these norms, they can be left behind or deemed as an outcast. Gender roles seem to be the most common. From the day a child is born societal norms are placed on them. For example a young boy’s room will be probably be blue and filled with sports items, while a young girls room will be pink and be filled with dolls and a play kitchen set. These small details, along with expectations, begin to shape their role in society. “Barbie Q” by Sandra Cisneros is a perfect example of societal expectations. In this short story Cisneros introduces two young girls who are playing with their Barbie dolls. The girls go into great detail when describing their dolls and the outfits the dolls are wearing. One can conclude that the girls are poor when the main character tells the reader that they only have one outfit for their dolls. They even had to make a dress from a sock because they could not afford other outfits. This is further illustrated when the girls begin describing how they will play with the dolls.......
