• Disciplines of Abstinence
• The spiritual disciplines of abstinence reveal the nature of the battle between the flesh and the spirit. By abstaining from food, social interaction, or sleep, we are "exercising" our spiritual muscles against the lower nature. It is like lifting weights; silly in itself, but useful to prepare us for real physical tests in the future. The things we abstain from in the spiritual disciplines are not evil; it is for the sake of the exercise that we deny ourselves; to prepare us for real temptation--tomorrow, or the next day.
1 Cor 6:12 (KJV) All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
• The disciplines of abstinence give us much needed experience and insight into the spiritual battle going on within us, and the lessons learned cannot be taught any other way. What is it like to say "No" to the lower nature? What tricks will it play? The way in which desire, habit, distraction, and other factors effect you will not be like anyone else. You must learn by doing how to live in holiness before God in your body. The disciplines of abstinence are an opportunity to train in safety.
1 Pet 2:11 (Phi) I beg you, as those whom I love, to live in this world as strangers, and "temporary residents", to keep clear of the desires of your lower natures, for they are always at war with your souls.
1 Pet 1:13 (NIV) Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled...
Disciplines of Engagement
• Dallas Willard defines the spiritual disciplines of engagement as the routine Christian activities of prayer, study, and meditation that are especially powerful in combination with the disciplines of abstinence. Disciplines of abstinence counteract tendencies to sins of commission, disciplines of engagement counteract tendencies to sins of omission…...

Spiritual Asssessment

...Spiritual Needs Assessment Grand Canyon University Spirituality in Health Care HLT-310V January 11, 2013 Spiritual Needs Assessment Spirituality plays an important role in people’s life and there is a correlation between spirituality and health outcomes. Health is a complete state of harmony of the body, mind and spirit. So taking care of patients’ spiritual need is as important as physical needs. Importance of spiritual care over physical care can also be seen in the bible verse “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come” ( 1 Timothy 4:8, Holy Bible). One of the studies by Dr. Anandarajah & Dr. Hight (2001) has shown that 94 percent of patients believed that their spiritual health is as important as physical health and 77 percent of patients wanted their health care provider to assess their spiritual needs when admitted in the hospital. Joint Commission also requires the hospitals to include spiritual assessment as part of the overall assessment of the patient . Joint Commission does not provide with an assessment tool, but provides with certain guide lines for creating assessment tools depending on the organization and type of patients served. Using these guidelines the author develops an assessment tool and completes spiritual assessment on one of the patient in her hospital, to identify the needs, hopes, resources and possible outcomes regarding spirituality and determine......

Spiritual Gifts

...Spiritual gifts are defined by “www.biblicalstudies.com” as “things characterized or controlled by the spirit”, In my definition, spiritual gifts are gifts given to Christians by God so that they can further administer the gospel (good news) of the coming/resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Examples of Spiritual gifts listed in the New Testament are : 1. Prophecy 2. Serving 3. Teaching 4. Encouragement 5. Wisdom and Knowledge 6. Faith 7. Healing 8. Miracles 9. Speaking/ interpreting tongues 10. Discernment  "False christs and false prophets are going to appear and produce great signs and wonders to mislead, if it were possible, even God's own people. Listen, I am warning you." Mat 24:25  Spiritual Gifts are, in my opinion, given to Christians by God for the purpose of making non-believers of Christ believe, by doing miraculous actions allowed by God, in order to spread the message of his Holy Church. Question 2 “Define each spiritual gift and its operation as recorded by Paul” 1 peter 4-10 states “just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God”. Bible scriptures referring to spiritual gifts are: 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14; Romans chapter 12; Ephesians chapter 4; and 1 Peter chapter 4. Spiritual gifts must be important to the Spirit of God who inspired the writing of the Word of God and thus they should be important to us. 1. Prophecy: The gift of prophecy is...

Spiritual Belifs

...SPIRITUAL LIFE AND BELIEFS I do not really have a defining moment in my life where everything changed and gave up drugs and drinking and turned towards God. However, I do have a moment where I turned to him but it isn’t big and grand. Sometimes I wish this was different, sometimes I wish I had some big grand story but then again. I have been immersed in God’s life for all my entire life and I can’t complain about that. I was born in a very spiritual family with parents who had very clear and strict rules when it came to church. After I was born, as soon as I was able to recognize my surroundings I was in church. I remember a few instances when I received some spanking for trying to lie my way out of going for Sunday school. However later on I became quite an active member of every club in Sunday school, be it drama, music and even became a Boys & Girls Brigade leader. However as I grew older and past the Sunday school age, I started losing my way as I tried to figure out where I fitted best. I started moving from church to church following my friends as I tried to fit in. At this point is where I came to appreciate the importance of family worship. A person who has a meaningful plan for his children has to invite God in to his home in order to lay a firm foundation for his family. It’s at home where children should gain the true education since it’s the very first school all children must begin from. Despite thinking I’m all grown...

Spiritual Gifts

...Sherri L Hull CHMN 201-D05 04/07/2014 Spiritual Gifts Paper Part One: What are my top 2 spiritual gift? Do I agree with the results? Why or Why not? The top two spiritual gifts from my assessment were Administration and Teaching, with Pastor/Shepherd receiving the same assessment score. Based on my background in Purchasing and Job Costing, I would have to agree with the Administration score; however, Teaching and Pastor/Shepherd has me somewhat confused. The descriptions of each of these, and how they appear to go hand-in-hand does; however, make sense. According to the assessment descriptions, if a person scores high in Teaching but not in Pastor/Shepherding they probably would not make a good Sunday school teacher; therefore, receiving the same score arouses my curiosity what does God see something in me, that I do not. My position as a job costing supervisor has taught me to account for each material being used in the manufacturing industry. Along with my former purchasing responsibilities, both positions back up the assessment score in Administration. The assessment further defines my score in Teaching/Shepherding, as a person who enjoys research. At times this person can be technical. This would represent the details of any given work or research being done, everything needs an explanation. It also defines the person as one who needs to be accommodating when deadlines near and pressure increases. This skillset may become beneficial to the calling I......

Spiritual Food

...feast for thousands.  He cooks fish on the shore for the disciples when they can’t catch a thing; and he overflows their nets when their human skills let them down.  But if you stop there, you have completely missed the point! God’s deliverance of His people isn’t about manna, and Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are not about bread and fish.  Something better entered into our world.  God’s plan is more profound then we ever could ever have imagined. Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life that has come down from heaven." But we, like the people in the crowd Jesus spoke to, often cannot, or will not, see what Jesus is showing us.  Many of us see just plain bread, not Jesus.  We see our physical wants and needs, not the chance at spiritual fullness. What do we hear when Jesus tells us He is the “Bread of Life?” Do we take Him literally?  Do we wonder if Jesus is Whole Wheat, Multi-grain, or perhaps sliced Wonder Bread?  Why did Jesus use Bread as an example?  To answer that, we need a bit of history about bread, because bread doesn't mean as much to us today as it did to the cultures in Jesus' time.  Bread is the most widely eaten food, and one of the oldest prepared foods, dating back to the Neolithic, or what many of us would call the Stone Age era, about 12,000 years ago.  The first bread produced was a flat bread made by mixing grain meal with water and baking the dough on heated rocks.  This flat bread formed a staple in the diet of many early......

...Janice Hileman CHMN 201-B02 05/19/2014 Spiritual Gifts Paper . PART ONE: What are your top two Spiritual Gifts? Do you agree with the results? Why or why not? My top two Spiritual Gifts are: (1) Evangelism; and (2) Pastor/ Shepherd tied with Showing Mercy. I completely agree with the results . I agree because I am a very compassionate woman. I love people and also willing to help those in need. I am able to sympathize and empathize with people who may have problems that others might feel uncomfortable with. I am also a very good listener. I love to share the Gospel with others and bring the lost to know Jesus Christ. I am truly blessed to have these gifts that God has given me. PART TWO: Specifically, how can you use your gifts at this time? How might you misuse your gifts? Be specific. There are many ways I can use my gifts today. In my Church there are people who often come to me to “unload” what’s going on in their Lives. I am always there to listen and give them the best advice I can. I show mercy by going with a group from the church to visit the ones who are shut-ins and letting them know that we care for them and that they are not alone. Outside the church I volunteer for Domestic and Sexually abused women’s shelter. I do a weekly Bible study and I teach some of them how to cook. I soon will be taking the required training to be a Christian Counselor. I also post Scripture, Devotionals, and......

Spiritual Gifts

...My Spiritual Gifts Part 1 [pic] Eunice T. Payne June 5, 2014 Revised August 13, 2014 INTRODUCTION When I was asked to go online and take a spiritual gift test my first thought was, (“Lord what the world is coming to”?) We really have to rely on the internet for everything these days?” Then I thought hey why not take it what can it hurt, I’ll go on and humor them. As I started to read the questions I felt like the questions needed more substance or needed to be worded differently; not realizing the devil was trying to discourage me from reading what I was about to find out. \ By the time I finished the test it read PASTOR, FAITH, GIVING. Each word had a meaning or explanation for each one. I looked real hard at “Pastor” and laugh then I called my son who is a minister and yes he’s from the old school like his momma. I said son I just took this test and explained to him what is was for. Of course he had the same reaction as I did when I was told about the site. He laughed. Well as we went on in conversation I gave him the end results and said now what I look like being a Pastor. I mean I have been around a lot of spiritual gifted people for most of my life and have been told by several that there’s an anointing on my life or that my light shines bright and have a spirit of victory, but never did I hear anyone say I would be a pastor or fit those shoes. Then a voice said you have been ministering to people young and old for over 20 years and you don’t...

Science or Spiritual??

...Science or Spiritual? How did we become to be? What is our purpose here? Many humans may ask these questions at some point in their lives. The answers to these questions can be very controversial. This is where creationism and evolution comes into par. Some people may say that a higher and greater power created the universe and the people in it. Others may give reasons that are scientific for our existence. An example would be the Big Bang; the only purpose for living is being able to survive. Both evolution and creationism may not be true, that is why this topic is very controversial. Evolution is the theory that all loving organisms can be traced back to a common ancestor, which came into being from non living elements, by natural laws. Darwin contributed to this theory by the mechanism by which species would evolve; in this case it would be natural selection. This method says that in certain factors an organism’s environment can create a change from one generation to another. There are reasons why plants, animals, and everything else is the way it is. For example humans, we evolved from primates so that we could survive. This was a slow process, which made little changes at a time. The big bang is the theory that a massive explosion created all matter in the universe. Certain species died because they were not as powerful and could not change. While there were others who could change, in which they adapted to the environment to survive best. To......

Spiritual Disaster

...this type of crisis individual, group, and community suffer loss of property, love ones, cultural unity and spiritual belief in isolation. Although they are given material supports and even moral supports, it cannot be compared with the spirituality effectiveness that survivors gone through. This is a major issue which needs to be addressed apart from medical treatment, spiritual restoration should be put in place to help resolve the immediate crisis and help restore the victim to a sense of normalcy or level of functioning equal to or higher than prior to the crisis. Most disaster survivors tend to look for higher power as a source for strength and hope during these difficult times. Therefore spiritual care providers should be made available to assist them to regain their trust in God and healing of minds. Many people will experience spiritual stress reactions during or after a disaster. During disasters, a diverse cross-section of people seek spiritual care. Religious leaders will be challenged to support and offer an open environment with respect to religious diversity, social diversity, and unfamiliar cultural and mass care settings. These tips can guide you as you help your congregants and the broader community during relief efforts and as they recover from the impact of a disaster. Pay attention to self-care as you care for others. To be effective, spiritual care providers should become educated in various aspects of disaster response. Community nurses are among......

Spiritual Warfare

...Spiritual Warfare Strongholds & Strategies Bob Burns “Everything is permissible for me-but I will not be mastered by anything” 1 Corinthians 6:12 1 The Bible tells us that we struggle not against flesh and blood, but against demonic forces. Ephesians 6:12, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Often the enemy uses life controlling problems as a means of attack. “Life-controlling problems are anything that master our lives and block our spiritual growth.” Other description include: life-controlling struggles, addictions, dependency, stronghold, besetting sin, slavery, and compulsive behavior. 1 Almost everyone has something blocking his or her spiritual growth in Christ. Some strongholds may be something that people consider positive such as sports or ministry. Others that are considered negative include drugs, gambling, sexual addiction and more. Perhaps a person is consumed by another persons problem, trapped by grief, depression, anger, envy, lust and etc. 2 In this paper we will discover the three tools Satan uses to keep people trapped which are delusion, secrecy, and isolation. Secondly we will learn about three resources God provides to confront the enemies attack. These include the Word of God, the Spirit of God, and the People of God. Delusion or deception means to make another person......

Spiritual Gifts

...2014 Daren L. Williams THEO 104 Aaron Gaston Foundational to the Christian faith is the belief that mankind is created in the image of God. Since Christian faith is the belief, man is created in the image of God, as a counselor, I should be committed to God and allow Him to impute into me, with His counseling of the Word and of His Holy Spirit. This will give me the Spiritual wisdom and knowledge to counsel people as God has counselled me. I believe only when people feel listened to, their questions heard and their ideas respected, will they think they have a voice. When this happens, it can only mean positive attitude all the way around. Proverbs 11:14 "For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisors" (NIV 2001). Example # 1: Social Work, since man was created in the image of God, as a counselor I should be able to help people to understand that sin has changes their minds to mirror the nature of this world and allow the worldviews to effectively control their daily lives and steal the spiritual inheritance that Christ died for. As a Christian Counselor in a worldly environment, we must be ever mindful that it will take a renewing of the mind, which will allow the worldly views to change to Christian views. Throughout the bible God has continued to show man that God's ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher that our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8; NIV......

Spiritual Formation

...Spiritual Formation Ministry Plan God expects individuals that call themselves “Christian” to grow spiritually. The Word of God encourages personal examination as a part of the growth process, as found in Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.” Becoming more Christ-like focuses on how He works in us and not on our work for Him. The Cycle of Works demonstrates that regardless of work we complete, the acceptance of others, the sustainability of our works and the significance it brings, we cannot compete with God’s Cycle of Grace that show us that we are significant in His sight and that brings us sustenance and acceptance as His child and that it is only by His work of dying on the cross that we can be forgiven. There are obstacles to developing any kind of plan for the church. People complain of not having enough time to study because of work, family, and other obligations. It is a matter of establishing personal priorities and because they see no tangible earthly benefits to spiritual practices, no effort is made in developing a personal plan for spiritual growth. According to Simon Chan in Spiritual Theology, we are a society of partially committed Christians (p. 105), demonstrated by his model of the world, the visible church, and the remnant. Chan contends that those in the remnant are disciplined and committed to corporate rule and prayer. Using......

Spiritual Gifts

...naturally, we call it a gift. But God also gave us another special gift. These gifts were assigned to us so we can help spread the gospel and further fulfill our duty within the church. They are called spiritual gifts. "The term charisma ("spiritual gift")... signifies redemption or salvation as the gift of God's grace (Rom. 5:15; 6:23) and a gift enabling the Christian to perform his service in the church (1 Cor. 7:7), as well as defining a special gift enabling a Christian to perform a particular ministry in the church." (Elwell, 2001) The spiritual gifts include: Woking of Miracles, Gifts of Healing, The Gift of Helpers, The Gift of Governments or Administration, The Gift of Faith, Apostleship, Prophets, The Gift of Discernming of Spirits, The Gift of Teaching, The Gift of Exhortation, The Gift of Wisdom, The Gift of Knowledge, The Gift of Tongues, The Gif of Interperetation of Tongues, The Evangalist, Service, Contribution, Acts of Mercy, and Giving. According to Galatians 5:22-23, "...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." Personally, I believe spiritual gifts are no good without the fruit of the Spirit. Because one can have the fruit of the Spirit without spiritual gifts, but the gifts are useless if one does not do it out of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindess, goodness...ect....

Spiritual Jounrey

...My spiritual journey is probably much like yours, with the main goal of trying to discover myself. What I like, and what I don’t like. What I believe, and what I don’t believe. Who I want to be, and who I don’t want to be. Although I’ve only had 21 years to work on this, I’ve come quite a long way from where I started. My grandfather was a minister, so ever since I can remember I have been attending church. It wasn’t until I was 12 however that I really found a connection to what some would call The Mystery, a Higher Power, or as I refer to it, God. There is a place in Jaffrey, NH called Monadnock Bible Conference. They run Christian based week long retreats year round for young adults, and it is here that I consider the beginning of my journey. These retreats were full of fun and games along with two worship services each day. These worship sessions were much like sermons, but catered to youth to keep us engaged. We listened to youth pastors and young adult speakers from all over the country who challenged and guided us in our faith. Along with these speakers were incredible Christian rock bands who played songs that moved us to get up and dance, and even knee down and pray. I remember attending one of the retreats right after starting 7th grade. I was overwhelmed by my new school, the peer pressure of new friends, and other typical 13 year old problems. I was listening to one of the speakers talk about how amazing God is, that when you have a relationship with him you......

...Spirituals Swing Low, Sweet Chariot If you view the song as carrying a religious message, explain what the chariot represents. What is meant by the word "home"? What is the overall subject of the song? The chariot represents death. The poet asks it to come carry him/her home. Home means heaven. The subject of the song is being tired and wanting to die peacefully. This is an old slavery song and is sung in many churches. If you interpret this song as a protest song, depicting a slaves desire for freedom, explain what the chariot represents. What is meant by the word "home"? What does Jordan, the river that formed the boundary to the Promised Land in ancient times, represent in this case? What does the "band of angels" represent? I do not view this song as a protest song, but if it were, the chariot would mean rescue and home would still mean heaven or a place of freedom. Jordan would represent the gate to heaven and the band of angels would represent a rescue party. For what types of situations would people write protest songs today? People might write protest songs about events like the attack on Paris or about certain political figures. Give an example of a modern-day protest song (name and artist who performs it) and briefly summarize what message it contains. (You do not need to provide the lyrics.) An example of a modern-day protest song is “Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day. The song is protesting the Bush Organization and 9/11. Go Down,......
