Which Is the Better Dog Food? The commercial dog food industry has been in existence for almost one hundred and fifty years. It affords a convenience to pet owners where by they only need to scoop out dry kibble in a bowl or open a can of pet food, without any additional food or supplement, pet owners do not know what ingredients are being used in the food. Many have relied on the dog food industry to use quality products in manufacturing their food. However, to their surprise, in some cases at the demise of pets this has not been the case. In light of all the pet food recalls since 1995 and more recently in March 2007, where Menu Foods recalled more 100 brands including Iams, Eukanuba, Hill’s Science Diet, Purina Mighty Dog and many store brands including Wal-Mart. Owners have began to take a more proactive approach as to learn what ingredients are in the product, by reading and understanding the label on the packaging and making a educated choice between the slew of brands whether it be dry kibble or canned food. Some owners are scrapping commercial dog foods all together and feeding their pet a homemade diet. These owners are convinced that the dogs health fare much better on these types of diets because before the existence of commercial dog foods pets ate what people consumed in the form of leftovers or table scraps or if they were in the wild they hunted their own food that provided the pet with natural protein and nutrients found in raw meat and plants and had no adverse results from the diet. Other reason as to why owners have change to this type of diet is that they can control what goes in the food, they know that the food is fresh, wholesome and that it has no chemical preservatives, dyes or other additives that may be harmful for their pet. It produces fewer stools, reduces arthritis and manages their weight better. According to…...

Home-Grown vs. Store-Bought

...Home-grown vs. Store-bought Position Paper Nealia Francis Professor Jessica Jordan Advance Composition DeVry University November 18, 2012 Home-grown vs. Store-bought Is it more cost effective to grow your own produce or to buy it in the supermarket? This question constantly came to mind after acquiring .92 acres of land two years ago. I usually make 10 or more trips to the supermarket in one month even after I do my big shopping at the beginning of the month. My trips following my first of the month are almost always for my produce. I spend more money on gas going to the store than I do to get to work. It is more cost effective to grow your own produce at home than to buy it in the supermarkets, because they spoil quickly and are not always fresh when you are ready to use them. You also save money on gas making trips to the grocery store twice a week to buy produce because they are not readily available at home when you need them. It is more cost effective to grow your own produce at home than to buy it in the supermarkets, because they spoil quickly and are not always fresh when you are ready to use them. Some would say that it is more convenient to buy produce at the supermarket because gardening requires too much work and time and this is practically impossible if you have a full-time job and a family to deal with. I disagree with this point because I have a full-time job, attend college online full-time and a family to deal with. I also have a new......

Better Than Store Bought

...Erica Scott Instructor Emily Stallings Communication Skills October 5, 2010 Better Than Store-bought I can relate to many things in Barbara Kingsolver’s book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle since I come from a small town where farming and knowing almost everyone around you is the norm. In chapter 13 Barbara talks about canning tomatoes, which I have had some experience with. In fact, I helped my mom just this past August with her canning. Almost every year around August our kitchen has a distinctive tomato scent that hits you as soon as you walk through the door. The scent fills the whole house and there is not one room that doesn’t have the smell of tomatoes reaching your nose. This year my Paw-Paw brought his homegrown tomatoes down to us to can since we quit gardening a few years ago. I completely agree with Barbara Kingsolver’s statement when she says, “Fresh garden tomatoes are so unbelievably tasty, they ruin us utterly and forever on the insipid imports available in the grocery.” (198). From the first time I tasted a homegrown tomato the taste of a store bought one was never the same. Towards the end of chapter 13 Barbara talks about how to can tomatoes. This is a fairly simple process that went along with how my mom taught me to can. First, you wash the tomatoes. Next, you dip 6 to 8 tomatoes into boiling water for about 30 seconds. Upon taking them out they are to be placed in ice cold water, which peels the skin right off. Then, using a knife, you cut the core......

Dog Food

...Dog food is great By T. J. Dunn, Jr., DVM   "What is the best food to feed a dog?" Every day veterinarians are asked that question by dog owners. It's a sincere question because most dog owners want to feed the very best to their furry friends. Good health begins with proper nutrition, regardless of price or convenience of acquisition.   Please understand that the entire discussion on this page relates to healthy dogs with no kidney, thyroid, food allergy or other abnormal conditions. Also, the content of this page is my opinion regarding the "best" dry food and how to determine what you think is "best" to feed dogs.   A big reason why it i is strictly an opinion, there is no single answer to the question "What is the best diet to feed a dog?" Or if there is an answer it is, "It depends".   Over the past 37 years I have been examining dogs and cats in my practices I have made it a point to ask the owner "What diet are you feeding?" I have gotten all sorts of answers but in every case I relate the owner's response to what I am seeing in the patient. And over the years my suggestions regarding what to feed have changed.   Originally I took the pet food manufacturer's declarations as fact -- that an assortment of "Complete and Balanced" pet foods were perfectly nourishing because that wording was not legally permitted on pet food labels unless feeding trials demonstrated its veracity. I eventually discovered I was mistaken in the belief that any "Complete and......
