Case Study Nike’s CSR Challenge
Case Questions
1. In referring to the opening profile and the closing case for this chapter, discuss the challenges regarding corporate social responsibility that companies in the apparel industry face in its supply chains around the world?
- There have been cases reported abusive treatments in more than a quarter of its South Asian plants. Another report is that 25%-50% of factories in the region restrict access to toilets and drinking water during the workday. The same percentage that was reported also applied to factories denying workers at least one day off of the seven days they already work.
- Nike’s CSR Challenge highlighted that difficulty of bring wholesale to change to a company that isn’t centralized. Instead the challenge is now to reform the way business is done. Leadership was traditionally seen as guiding your employees towards the goal of the company. What is need is a more open form of leadership that calls for collaboration among mutually dependant parties in order to solve systemic problems.
- The challenges are too reshape the signals being given out by its supply chains group to itself and its competitors. So that the companies can operate in a sustainable and just way, which is also financially viable.
2. Discuss the meaning and implications of the statement by a Nike representative that “consumers are not rewarding us for investments in improved social performance in supply chains.”
- Nike starts to create a positive environment. Change the system for upgrades. Doing this will being more consumers, and brining feedback from consumers will help Nike continue forward.
3. What does it mean to have an industry open-systems approach to social responsibility? What parties are involved? Who are the stakeholders?
- To have an industry open-system approach to social responsibility means to understand that the…...

Hydraulic Fracturing

...Introduction Hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, is a means of natural gas extraction employed in deep natural gas well drilling. The fracturing is done from a wellbore drilled into reservoir rock formations. The rock layers are fractured when chemical-laced water and sand are blasted underground to break apart rock and release natural gas. The chemical based water is known as fracking fluid. The fracking fluid injected into the rock is typically a slurry of water, proppants, and chemical additives. Additionally, gels, foams, and compressed gases, including nitrogen, carbon dioxide and air can be injected. Various types of proppant include silica sand, resin-coated sand, and man-made ceramics. These vary depending on the type of permeability or grain strength needed. Sand containing naturally radioactive minerals is sometimes used so that the fracture trace along the wellbore can be measured. Chemical additives are applied to tailor the injected material to the specific geological situation, protect the well, and improve its operation, though the injected fluid is approximately 98-99.5% percent water. (Modern Shale Gas Development in the United States: A Primer, 2009) For each frack, 1-8 million gallons of water and 80 – 300 tons of chemicals may be used to frack a well. A well may be fracked up to 18 times. (Fox, 2010) Figure 1: Hydraulic Fracturing (Albertan, 2011) History Hydraulic fracking of oil and gas wells was first used in the United States in......

The Sun

...“SUN” The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is almost perfectly spherical and consists of hot plasma interwoven with magnetic fields. The Sun is a G-type main-sequence star comprising about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. The Sun consists of plasma and is not solid. It rotates faster at its equator than at its poles. This behavior is known as differential rotation, and is caused by convection in the Sun and the movement of mass. The Sun is a Population I or heavy element-rich star.  The formation of the Sun may have been triggered by shockwaves from one or more supernovas. The Sun does not have a definite boundary as rocky planets do. Through most of the Sun's life, energy is produced by nuclear fusion through a series of steps called the proton–proton chain. This process converts hydrogen into helium. The Sun is a magnetically active star that supports a strong, changing magnetic field that varies year to year and reverses direction about every eleven years around solar maximum. The Sun's magnetic field leads to many effects that are called solar activity which carries material through the Solar System. Solar activity changes the structure of Earth's outer atmosphere. All matter in the Sun is in the form of gas and plasma because of its high temperatures. This makes it possible for the Sun to rotate faster at its equator than it does at higher latitudes. The Sun was formed about 4.57 billion years ago from the......

Sun Hydraulics Case Analysis

...Individual analysis to “Sun Hydraulics” After reading the story “Sun Hydraulics”, I am wondering whether this is a real story, or just a literary work that the content is not necessarily based on fact. So my below analysis is based on the assumption that this is a real story. The 10 years successful operation of Sun Hydraulics Corporation was quite special, which most of the business leaders cannot agree with this approach, but Bob Koski made it and achieved the business success by this special approach. The success was because: 1) Bob understood the hierarchy organization and its disadvantages. This helped him to design a more effective organization structure to conduct the business. 2) An effective climate that motivates the people to enjoy the work and allows employees to focus on their job interests. 3) Family groups made people worked very closely and effectively. 4) This “horizontal” structure created the culture that everyone is the owner of the business, which made employee more responsible. In another word, employees felt that they were not only working for the company, but also for themselves. Though Bob and his Sun team achieved lots of successes in the first 10 years, however I do see a lot of challenges on the way. Let me audaciously predict what will happen in the future. Sun will continue standing as an industry leader for maybe 10 more years. But after 1995, when most of Sun’s competitors moved their factories to the cheap-labor countries,......

...There are several key components to the composition of hydraulic oil that must be noted. The most prominent property of hydraulic oil is that which pertains to its viscosity, in other words its viscosity and viscosity index, this is because these two aspects contained in this one property affect many systems and include but are not limited to; sealing, lubrication, pump efficiency, and rate of contamination. Another property would be the fluids low compressibility as this aspect of the fluid allows it to perform the fluids main and key function, act as a medium for power transfer and control, though in that regard there is many other properties involved like fast air release and low volatility but overall low compressibility is the most prominent. Last but not least of the most important properties of hydraulic oil is a compilation of its many lubrication functions derived from its anti wear , cleanliness, demulsibility, hydrolytic stability, and corrosive control qualities. Despite the fluids own cleanliness properties many hydraulic systems fall prey to contamination. This is usually due to human error itself usually in the form of placing new hydraulic oil barrels into the system without properly filtering it beforehand as new oil is usually nowhere near clean enough to be placed in the system. Other forms of contamination include Built –in where during the systems assembly or testing some form of contamination was introduced, and Ingressed contamination where air......

Hydraulic Fracturing

...What is Hydraulic Fracturing? Hydraulic Fracturing is the propagation of fractures in a rock layer by a pressurized fluid. It is used to extract valuable resources easier, that are buried deep in earth’s crust. Induced hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracturing, commonly known as fracing, fraccing, or fracking, is a technique used to release petroleum, natural gases including shale gas, tight gas, and coal seam gas, or other substances for extraction. This type of fracturing creates fractures from a wellbore drilled into reservoir rock formations. In US, Hydraulic Fracturing is a common method. It is mainly used in the oil rich regions such as South and North East. However some of the drilling sites are on hold as there’s a research going on in order to understand the effects of Hydraulic Fracturing on drinking water reserves. In Europe, Bulgaria and France are the only countries that have big enough shale gas reserves to be investing on Hydraulic Fracturing and have the method banned. In Ireland there are strong protests going on to ban the method, but in UK and Poland Hydraulic Fracturing method is commonly used. South America, home for less developed countries in general, had it’s first shale gas well in 2011. So far it remains to be the only one. Economic Effects: Hydraulic fracturing is a common method of extracting resources from the ground right now. And in the future, it is expected that almost 70 percent of the natural gas extracting will be done......

Hydraulic Fracturing

...Legal Issues in Hydraulic Fracturing Demand for energy shows every promise of remaining high, and supplies of natural gas and oil worldwide are dwindling. Renewable and alternative energy sources – for example, wind-generated electricity, or nuclear power – are being developed and considered at the national level; however, at the time of writing more than half of the total energy consumed in the United States comes from oil and natural gas sources. Specifically, natural gas was – in 2011 – providing fully a quarter of the total energy consumed in the United States (Obama, 2013). Hydraulic fracturing, also known as “fracking”, provides a means of exploiting the reserves of natural gas within United States territory. These natural gas reserves are positioned in such a way that they cannot typically be exploited by traditional methods, and instead are produced by a process of hydraulic fracturing. This means of oil and gas production is relatively new, and it remains controversial in terms of economics, safety and environmental cost. In addition to ecological, sociological and political considerations, there are many legal issues involved in the production of energy via hydraulic fracturing (Hagstrom and Adams, 2012). Regulation The actual activity of hydraulic fracturing is carried out by private corporations; however, the process is governed by multiple State and Federal regulations and laws. As the field of hydraulic fracturing is developing quickly and recently,......

Hydraulic Fracturing

...Hydraulic Fracturing Hydraulic fracturing is a process of drilling and injecting fluids at a high pressure into the ground to break rocks and release methane gas and toxic chemicals and contaminate groundwater. “Hydraulic fracturing is used after the drilled hole is completed. Put simply, hydraulic fracturing is the use of fluid and material to create or restore small fractures in a formation in order to stimulate production from new and existing oil and gas wells. This creates paths that increase the rate at which fluids can be produced from the reservoir formations, in some cases by many hundreds of percent.” (Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, 2010) This process allows production in older oil and natural gas fields. Hydraulic fracturing has been used in the United States since the 1940’s. “The U.S. has vast reserves of natural gas that are commercially viable as a result of advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies enabling greater access to gas in shale formations. Responsible development of America's shale gas resources offers important economic, energy security, and environmental benefits.” (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2013) Fractures in Onshore shale and Tight Rock formations are oil fracking. It can be natural or man-made through rock. The fluid includes water, sand, ceramic and often chemicals. “High-pressure Fracking is done from a wellbore drilled into reservoir rock formations to......

Hydraulic Fracturing

...| Hydraulic Fracturing Hydraulic fracturing is a completion process that has been proven. It allows producers to recover natural gas and oil safely. This process reduces our national carbon dioxide, reduces our reliance on foreign fuel imports, and accelerates our transition to a carbon light environment. The development of natural gas and oil is critical to America’s energy needs and economic renewal. The process of hydraulic fracturing is using water pressure under tight controls to create fractures in rock that allow oil and natural gas to escape and flow up out of the ground. While in this process “fracturing fluids” are mixed in using high pressure. This creates fissures that allow resources to move freely from rock pores where they are trapped. (Chesapeake Energy) First, the way hydraulic fracturing works is a production drill is drilled through the rock layers to intersect the coal seem that contains coal bed methane, CBN. Second, fractures are created or existing fractures are enlarged in the coal seem so that the CBM can be drawn from the well and pumped to the surface. These fractures are created or enlarged by using a thick water-based fluid which is gradually increased by rate and pressure. Third, over time the coal seam is unable to keep up with the fracturing fluid which results in high pressure causing the coal to fracture along the weaknesses within. Sand is pumped into these fractures to keep them ‘propped’ open after the pressures are released. After a...

Hydraulic Fracturing

...Name Tutor Course Date Title: Hydraulic Fracturing POPULATION/PROBLEM/PROCESS Hydraulic fracturing or fracking, as it is commonly referred to, is a method of oil and gas extraction that has been in use for well over 60 years. This is a method that is centered on injecting a mixture of a proppant such as sand, chemicals and water into an oil or gas well. The injection of this fluid is responsible for creating fractures in the pre-drilled well, thereby allowing greater permeability of the stone. The small cracks in the stone are filled by the proppant, in this case sand, to keep them open even after the water flows back out. Among the chemicals used are gelling agents. The purpose of these gelling agents is to ensure that the proppant remains suspended in the mixture, and does not sink. Other chemicals in the mixture increase the fracturing ability of the solution. Once this has been achieved, the small pores and air spaces between the rocks are filled with the proppant and cause the natural gas trapped within the natural spaces to escape. This gas is then collected. The use of horizontal hydraulic fracturing has also been instrumental in the extraction of oil. The use of horizontal hydraulic fracturing has increased profitability and efficiency in the extraction of oil, when compared to the predominantly used vertical drilling methods. By increasing the extraction of natural gas from sources that were originally considered unproductive, this process has resulted in more...

Hydraulic Fracturing

...What is Hydraulic Fracturing? Hydraulic fracturing is the process of drilling for natural gas and oil underneath the ground. Hydraulic fracturing is a procedure that can increase the flow of oil or gas from a well (what is Fracking, 2013). Hydraulic Fracturing Process  It is done by pumping liquids down a well into subsurface rock units under pressures that are high enough to fracture the rock and release the gas. The goal is to create a network of interconnected fractures that will serve as pore spaces for the movement of oil and natural gas to the well bore (King, 2013).  Hydraulic Fracturing in the United States, Europe and South America The first use of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate oil and natural gas wells in the United States was in the 1940s (King, 2013). This process used in nine out of 10 natural gas wells in the United States. In December 2012 the British government gave the approval for exploratory hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas from shale-rock deposits (Reed, 2012). In 2011, a horizontal well with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing was completed in the Neuquén Basin of Argentina. It was the first horizontal gas shale well and the deepest shale gas well in South America (Halliburton, 2013). Economic Impact/Concern of Hydraulic Fracturing According to the Global Fund Exchange, there are a number of environmental concerns related to hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing......

Hydraulic Fracking

...Hydraulic Fracturing; Fracking 2 Abstract What are the environmental concerns surrounding hydraulic fracture drilling (fracking) for gas? With the fast expansion of shale gas drilling operations and reduced federal regulations has placed our environment in harm’s way. If the environment is in trouble so are the health of humans and animals. Without proven scientific studies, the gas drilling boom sweeping the U.S. and the world will remain an uncontrolled health experiment of enormous scale. There is much controversy surrounding the impact of this type of drilling on air and water quality, placing gas and oil companies against individuals and groups concerned with environmental and health protection. It is time for federal regulation and tougher oversight control of this out of control drilling. Hydraulic Fracturing; Fracking 3 What Is Fracking Hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking better known as fracking is a method of mining for natural gas which greatly increases the efficiency of extracting shale gas from deep underground. This method has been used since the 1940’s and perfected by Floyd Farris of the Standard Oil and Gas Corporation. In the beginning the process was simple in its technique of introducing......

Sun Hydraulics

...Sun Hydraulics: Leading in Tough Times Case Study Executive Summary Sun Hydraulics, an industry leader of hydraulic valves and manifolds, has seen steady growth over the past eight years. It has been a profitable company throughout the years with varying return on sales. Presently Sun is constrained by declining sales and high labor costs heading into the present recession. The horizontal corporate structure has proven ineffective in ridding itself of low performing employees that are weighing down the company and thus decreasing profitability. It is time for Allen Carlson, president and CEO of Sun Hydraulics Corporation, to address the employees and shareholders of his decision on how Sun plans to deal with labor and profits during these tough times. I recommend that Sun Hydraulics should proceed with layoffs and early retirement plans to effectively and immediately reduce labor costs during the present recession. This approach seen by some as a short-term solution, allows Sun to rid itself of low performers that the present corporate structure has failed to do. Not only will it increase overall moral over time, but also these layoffs will allow current employees to contribute more time towards future growth and less time coaching or babysitting present employees that may be unhappy or underperforming. Organizational Profile/Overview Bob Koski along with another engineer established Sun Hydraulics, describe as the BMW in the Hydraulics Industry, in......

Sun Hydraulics

...HRMG 6200 Bob Koski’s business plan for Sun Hydraulics was successful because Bob created an environment that fostered creativity, an essential characteristic for this type of manufacturing business. Although I’ve never experienced working in a horizontal management organization due to the nature of my field, I can appreciate how Bob’s horizontal organization and working in teams created job satisfaction that increased employee self-motivation that ultimately increased productivity which resulted in the success of Sun Hydraulics in a competitive manufacturing market. However, I believe that horizontal management for Sun Hydraulics could inhibit Sun Hydraulics’ national and international expansion. A decentralized structure, working in teams and communicating the organization’s goals can attract really talented creative employees who like to work in an environment that is not restricting. Employees in these organizations can make companies successful once the employees perceive that their skills and talents are well compensated and their job is designed with all or one of the five enrichment motivators. Horizontal organizations that are successful and grow can become chaos since there is a decentralized structure. The total amount of employees, their various personalities and values can make communication very difficult. Hence the reason for Bob Koski limiting the total amount of employees in each location to be less than 250 which can inhibit the growth of the......
