The young man, a high school student speaking in an extemporaneous speech competition, addressed the topic with confidence. He had been given only 10 minutes to prepare a 3-5 minute speech.
“Texting has become a major means of communication. Why is it so popular?”
How ironic. When I agreed to judge at a Business Professionals of America high school speech contest today, I was doing it because I want to support young people’s efforts to become better communicators. I’m concerned that texting and social media seem to be eclipsing face-to-face communications.
What would he say? I leaned forward and started taking notes. At the end of his presentation, I had one major thought; texting has not adversely affected his ability to talk! Then, as the luck of the draw would have it, the next speaker also had the same topic.
I value the ideas that young people have and find that often the first ideas, ideas which haven’t been researched or massaged into the perfect five paragraph essay, are ideas that are near and dear to the heart.
Here is a summary of the points these students made regarding texting vs. phone calls:
1. Private conversations—texting is more private than a phone call because it is silent. As one speaker said, “If I’m sitting on a bus and talking to my friend on the phone about where I hid the pirate treasure, the guy next to me will hear it and might steal the treasure. If I text the information, only my friend will know.”
2. Non-Interruptions. Texting doesn’t have to interrupt an activity.
3. Easier to Multi-task Multi-tasking is easier because you can ignore the text message for a while.
4. Multiple conversations are possible.
5. On-going conversationYou can take your time with responding. The conversation can “linger” and occur with larger time breaks than on the phone.
6. Time differences (Time zones) are less important because you can…...

...English Essay Rewrite Compare and contrast Text A and Text B Text A- Satirical Elegy on the death of a late famous general Text B- An obituary of William Davidson Both texts are similar, in the fact that they both are reminiscence on a person’s life after their death. Many differences, however, can be seen throughout the poem written by Jonathan Swift and the Obituary. The opening of both Texts is contradictory as Text A opens with a series of exclamations, ‘His Grace! Impossible! What, dead!, ’which gives an impression of surprise at the death but not a sense of grief is aroused. On the other hand, Text B embarks with a compliment ‘was in his element at the heart of the action’; both openings give a clear implication of the withdrawal of the rest of the text. The structure of both are also at a contrast, Text A is an elegy so Is a farewell to the dead but the fact that Swift writes a satire elegy therefore removes the traditional aspect of an elegy. Text B is an Obituary, but although also a farewell to the dead, it is read at a remembrance or a funeral so is written with aspiration to honour William Davidson and not undermine him in the way that Text A is. Text A is written with a sarcastic and mocking tone, through the poem it is highlighted that the general has earned the disrespected he has received through the mention also of his failures with use of the parallelism of ‘Nor widows’ sigh, nor orphans’ tears’ which gives the impression that no grief is......

To Text or Not to Text

...To text or not to text Text messaging has become a convenient way to communicate or maybe an obsession. Texting as is it is commonly referred to today, allows individuals to literally to express their thoughts, information, and maintain relationships with the tips of their fingers. The use of the text message has redefined the way in which our society communicates with each other. Would you believe that 11% of people have sent a text message during sex! Wow! This trend seems to have become an addiction. Text messages are usually read within 5 minutes of being received and responded to instantly. Though this function has many benefits, it has created several negative problems as well. The cost to ones safety as well as the general public has made texting a highly debated subject. I prefer to just pick up the phone and make a call. It’s quick, it’s easy and if you don’t get an answer, you just leave a message or call back later. Thought of as a convenient way of communication, texting with technology advances faster than etiquette has contributed to the erosion of our society. The power of text messaging is one that has redefined how the world communicates and those that choose to use it have a responsibility to use it correctly. Text messaging allows for individuals to maintain person relationships for those that do not have the ability to see one another on a regular basis. As a study showed, the average teenager uses the text message for about 54% of their interactions......

...remuneration and opportunities for growth. Conversely, organizations that emphasize long-term orientation, thrift, communality harmony and respect for tradition will result in workers receiving promotion and rewards on the basis of seniority, and rewarding high-performance teams rather than individual’s works well as a motivational tool. Human resource practitioners in Eastern and Western countries adopt different modes of communication because of the various meanings attached to verbal and nonverbal interaction. In Eastern countries, communication is mostly contextual and indirect because of the need to save face, while in Western countries; verbally direct communication is the ideal practice. Effective human resource management also calls for observance of nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, punctuality and bowing etiquette. For example, in Japan, bowing is a sign of respect, and the depth of a bow communicates the esteem attached to the recipient. The use of email, networking forums and other management forums are also more highly valued in Western than Eastern countries where personal relationships are of the highest importance....

The Text

...The text under stylistic analysis is written by Joyce Carry. It deals with the author’s emotions and feelings towards Clare, Tutin’s wife, who lost her husband. This text is about one businessman Tutin who tell in love with his secretary and wanted a divorce. After having a conversation with his husband, Clare was resigned after all. She thought it would be stupid to try to hold him against his will and he’d only hate her. Then we meet an Old Mrs. Beer who was the widow of a canon. This comparison the author used to show us that the old lady became a widow long ago and probably used to live alone. Then the author describes her appearance and her character . She was a short, stout woman with a red face and a heavy jaw — a pugnacious and indomitable face. And having known this description we can say it was a bossy person who liked to give orders to other people. The author compare her face with the faces in boxing booths, who have been in the ring all their lives and lost all their fight but still follow the game, in order to show that she already «lost her fight», but anyway like giving arbitrary commands . And when she got to know about this arrangement she came without any warning and broke into Tutin’s office, with an umbrella in hand as if about to beat him. This comparison author used to underline she had very serious intentions as to his son-in-low. «This was in the presence of the secretary who was taking a dictation — not Phyllis was no longer a secretary». And...

...heart a dilettante, and thinking over a pleasure to come often gave him a subtler satisfaction than its realisation. This was especially the case when the pleasure was a delicate one, as his pleasures mostly were; and on this occasion the moment he looked forward to was so rare and exquisite in quality that--well, if he had timed his arrival in accord with the prima donna's stage-manager he could not have entered the Academy at a more significant moment than just as she was singing: "He loves me--he loves me not--HE LOVES ME!--" and sprinkling the falling daisy petals with notes as clear as dew. She sang, of course, "M'ama!" and not "he loves me," since an unalterable and unquestioned law of the musical world required that the German text of French operas sung by Swedish artists should be translated into Italian for the clearer understanding of English- speaking audiences. This seemed as natural to Newland Archer as all the other conventions on which his life was moulded: such as the duty of using two silver- backed brushes with his monogram in blue enamel to part his hair, and of never appearing in society without a flower (preferably a gardenia) in his buttonhole. "M'ama . . . non m'ama . . . " the prima donna sang, and "M'ama!", with a final burst of love triumphant, as she pressed the dishevelled daisy to her lips and lifted her large eyes to the sophisticated countenance of the little brown Faust-Capoul, who was vainly trying, in a tight purple velvet......

Fiction vs. Informational Texts Which Will Kindergartners Choose?

...Journal – YC: Young Children; Nov 2011, Vol 66 Issue 6. P100 Title – Fiction vs. Informational Texts Which Will Kindergartners Choose? Author – Marlene Ponte Correia This article discusses what informational text is and how it supports children’s overall literacy development. Informational text or non-fiction includes but is not limited to textbooks, magazines, directions, etc. Informational text is written and read to answer questions and to learn something new. Informational text can be intimidating to adults let alone small children so it is understandable that some teachers may be intimidated introducing non-fiction to their early learners. There is an assumption that children will understand and make sense of a story that is fiction before they will be able to comprehend text that is a nont-fiction text (Bortnem). Some teachers may feel the text is too complicated, the vocabulary is too topic specific, there is not enough age appropriate material and many may such as storybooks, fairytales, etc. The author like many teachers was convinced that kindergartners preferred fiction, even though much of the research cited children's preferences for the content of informational books over narrative text. The author decides to investigate the children's book preferences through a study to determine if her perception that they preferred fiction was accurate. The core of the article centers on her study that was done among a class of kindergarteners.  The study was done......
