The Big Five Personality Traits
Personality traits reflect people’s characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Motivation is a factor that is highly dependent upon personality and because of this, managers must be able to recognize and respond to the different traits. Personality has been studied extensively throughout the years and researchers have found five distinct personality traits that are most relevant to organization; agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, extraversion and openness. Because of the way personality influences a person’s performance, these are referred to as the “big five” personality traits (Griffin & Moorhead, 2014, p. 66).
Agreeableness
Agreeableness is the ability of a person to get along with those around them. Individuals who possess this trait tend to be forgiving, understanding of others’ needs, forgiving, open and good natured (Griffin & Moorhead, 2014, p. 66). An agreeable person is also more likely to be trusting and helpful (Pappas, 2013, para. 4). One way to motivate someone who is agreeable is to include them in the onboarding process for new staff. This will appeal to their personality because they will be in a position to help new staff members, as well as give them a sense of responsibility.
Conscientiousness
A highly conscientious person is organized, highly self-disciplined, thorough, responsible, and only focuses on a small number of goals at one time (Griffin & Moorhead, 2014, p. 66). Highly conscientious people are also described as being deliberate and sincere in their obligations to others. The term personality was originated from a specific place and is exponentially more complex although there are some assumptions when developing theories on personality alone. Any type of behaviors that are produced by a conscious choice is known as a free will or forces that are deemed as determined by a person’s control. In my opinion, free will expressions are contrary to the power to choose their actions and the extremity of influence in factors of heredity is none other than influenced by environmental factors. ...In psychology, personality traits could be explained from many aspects, and one of them describes personality traits as categorizations of people’s particular characteristics (Burger, 1997) while others hold opposite ideas that personalities are more unique and different for each individual depending on his or her peculiar life experience. The former idea relates itself to nomothetic approach, which is a quantitative approach that studies personalities that people share in common to find out a general law that applies to everyone. The nomothetic approach suggests that people show universal traits and that personality traits are consistent within humans. Gordan Allport first brought up this approach to understand personality in 1930s, and after that, many theories has been conducted from it. There are several types of assessments that are used to determine a multitude of traits that one may have. These assessments include the Big Five Personality Test. These assessments also measure a person’s strengths and weaknesses in a particular category. The reliability and validity of these assessments are measured on an individual basis. Utilizing the Big Five assessment tool located in Chapter 8 of the text, Yasmin discovered a multitude of things about her personality, some in which she both agrees and disagrees. First, the assessment show that Yasmin a seven in the extroversion category which is considered high. This particular category Yasmin agrees with this because she views herself as a dominant, outgoing person who can associate well with other people in any setting. According to the Big Five Assessment LaToya found her experience to be fascinating, she was amazed how accurate the test described her personality. She scored 2% in the open to experience category that states, “You prefer traditional experiences” (John 2000). Latoya found this statement to be false because, she sees herself as a curious individual. She likes to research material her average peers would not consider, for instance, her curiosity about serial killers. Latoya scored 1% in the conscientious category that described her as unorganized. Her percentage in the extraversion category was moderately accurate, she enjoys time alone however, she is social and talkative when comfortable. ...I took the “Big Five Personality Test” on the internet. Overall, I think the results were not too bad. However, some of the categories I scored a lot different than I thought I would. Otherwise, I think this a really interesting personality test to take. In the category of openness to experience, I scored low and it said that I was close-minded and not open to new experiences. I think that I'm pretty open to try anything new and thus this isn’t right. However, it also says that low scorers are down to earth, which I am. The next category was conscientiousness, I scored in the lower numbers again and thus it said that I was disorganized. I am somewhat disorganized but I don’t tend to do things haphazardly like it says. I am usually very reliable and careful like the high scorers in this category. In the category extroversion, I scored in the higher numbers and therefore it said that I am outgoing and social. That statement is very true, I am always going out with friends and talking to people. My score in this category was right on. In the category agreeableness, I scored exactly in the middle and therefore I don’t know exactly what that means. It says that I’m not forgivable or irritable. The term OCEAN is an acronym for Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. It narrows down your personality into five categories and lets you know what your tendencies may be. I received a score of 20 for Openness to Experience/Intellect. My score for this represents a conventional, narrow interests, down to earth, and uncreative person. My results said that I am somewhat conventional. I scored this way because I am really not open to change. I don’t enjoy change at all because it isn’t the normal for me. It’s like when you’re in school and your parents get a new job out of state and you are uprooted to another place, another school and have to state all over.
