After hearing about an expert system that analyzed an application and said to write it at substandard when the company's best underwriter had decided it was standard, Chief information officer, Dennis Devereaux, and vice president of information systems planning, Max Vargo, are about to request $1 million to develop an expert system for Linda Peterson's property and casualty (P & C) underwriting department.

They've discussed the expert system with President Bill Hayes, CFO Hal Atkins, and other members of the capital expense committee and for the most part felt it would be approved, however some members of the CEC, including Bill Hayes, are leaning against the expert system project.

After much discussion, it boiled down to putting together some fancy slides of the data to show how expert systems make fewer mistakes than human experts and how much time it takes to process an application with and without the system.

The expert systems proposal is intended to make a fundamental change in the way the company does business, but it is being presented and judged as an information technology project. Only the line organizations can justify investing in the expert systems proposal by projecting improvements in their operating performance, and they do not appear to be partners in the proposal.

The mere thought of Integrating the various expert system into existing databases and other systems will be problematic, and agents will face chaos rather than a single interface when they are trying to give customers quotes.

...Case of DaimlerChrysler merger Introduction The case is about merger and demerger of the two automotive companies which have dedicated and skilled workforces and successful products, but in different markets and in different regions of the world, i.e. Daimler Benz of Germany and other company is Chrysler Corporation of US which take place merger in 1998 and demerged in year of 2007. This study analyses the potential sources of value creation and destruction, and evidence on how this process has affected the valuation of the Daimler Chrysler merger. We also discuss some of the important issues that must be taken into account in cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Differences in corporate culture, compensation policies, ownership structure, and the legal environment may pose significant challenges to international business combinations. This is the historic merger that will change the face of the automotive industry. Context In a Modigliani-Miller framework, if mergers do create value, they do so by changing tax liabilities, changing contracting costs, or changing investment incentives. If the size, timing, and riskiness of the combined future cash flows of the merged firms exceed the cash flows of the separate firms (“synergy”), the merger will be a positive net present-value project. They include:- Tax motivation Mispricing inspiration Market power high price hypothesis motivation Earning diversification stimulation In the case of Daimler Chrysler......

Software Quality Rbs Case Study

...Introduction The use of software solutions to support business-critical processes has a decisive influence on the commercial success of the banks. At present, they are faced with the challenge of selecting optimal solutions to fit their particular needs, and implementing them. Information technology is indisputably crucial to the activities of financial service providers. A considerable proportion of funds should be spent on core banking systems, which provide indispensable support for bank-specific business processes. For some years now, banking software has been the source of lively debate. The advanced age of many business-critical systems, as well as their rigidity and complexity, have proven to be a burden to banks. Concern exists that they might no longer be able to meet the demands of today’s market. The triggers of this concern have been software systems that have been in use for a number of years and have been further developed over the course of time; in many instances they have been linked up – as effectively as possible – to bolt-on applications. Many core banking systems have grown up over the years that are lacking in the necessary flexibility, which has been compensated by workarounds. The technical problems that affected RBS Group has caused the banks to rethink their IT strategy. The transformation of the software environment is not merely giving banks the flexibility and agility they need. The use of appropriate applications also constitutes an......

The Case for Software Internal Quality

...THE CASE FOR INTERNAL SOFTWARE QUALITY While this might look like stating the obvious, I still find that there are organisations especially in this part of the world (Nigeria) that have not really imbibed software quality assurance practices. From experience, I find that its because management has not really taken a serious look into the merits and demerits of internal software quality. What is internal software quality and what how does it differ from Just plain Software Quality? When it comes to software quality assurance, it is most commonly viewed in two aspects (There could be more). • External software quality. • Internal software quality. This is derived from Steve McConnell's division of software characteristics in external and nternal characeteristics. External software quality refers to the parts of software that face a user. These refer to: • Functionality • Usability • Reactivity • Security • Availability • Reliability All these aspects of software quality can verified by testing the software as a whole – end-to-end tests. Most often this is the aspect of the software that users and non technical management focus on. Is it doing what the user wants it to do? While this is both ok and required, it is not enough to ascertain the quality of an application. Internal Software Quality refers to the quality of the source code itself. These refer to: • Application Architecture Practices • Coding Practices • Application Complexity • Documentation • Portability • Technical......

Proposal Recommendation for Heritage Case

...Proposal Recommendations Based on my financial analysis of the two proposals, I suggest we recommend “Match My Doll Cloth Line” project over “Design Your Own Doll” project. The “Match My Doll Cloth Line” expansion will be a safer and more profitable investment for New Heritage. A forecast of cash flow for the next 10 years was developed for both projects. It is found that NPV for the two projects are very close, with Matching My Doll Cloth Line’s at $7,648 and Design Your Own Doll’s at $7,996. However, the Matching My Doll Cloth Line expansion has a higher IRR (20%) compared to Design Your Own Doll (15%). It requires significant less capital expenditure initially ($1,470K vs. 4,610K) and over the next ten years. It also has a less payback period (~6 years vs. ~9 years). The cash flow forecast model for the Matching My Doll Cloth Line project assumed 8.4% discount rate. This project is less risky than the Design Your Own Doll project (9% discount rate assumed) because it is less capital intensive and will pay back faster. There are other factors that are difficult to be evaluated on a numerical basis but nonetheless very important to consider. For example, which project is more consistent with our core value/company brand image? New Heritage Dolls has been focusing on offering “intergenerational experience” for grandmothers, mothers and daughters. The Matching My Doll Cloth Line will enhance our existing customers’ experience by bringing new elements to their......

Phurnace Software Case Stud

...Phurnace Software, LLC: According to the business plan set forth in the case, assuming the purported software capabilities were real, I would invest in Phurnace Software due to four primary reasons, including solid market validation, niche market, favorable business model and huge potential market and conservative projection. Solid Market Validation: the market validation included both primary research and secondary data collection. The team conducted several face-to-face interviews with the actual J2EE application users and posted a request to fill out the online survey on more than a dozen Java application related news groups. After the number one pain point and market interest level were determined, the team supported the statements by using numbers, scales, and percentages. In addition, the same market pain conclusion was drawn through a secondary market validation method, an independent study. Strong market validation from a variety of sources presented convincing pain points and interests. Niche Market/Industry: The software, J2Install, enables fast and reliable server deployment while eliminating configuration errors and accelerating the enterprise application development life-cycle. The dominant vendors of J2EE application servers were IBM, BEA Systems and JBoss. J2Install fell in a niche between 2 existing industries, the J2EE management software industry and the installation software industry, which simple deployment and maintenance were not their core...

Kfc Case Study. Business Proposal

...recognizable brands. Despite of the KFC’s past success in the U.S market, much of the KFC’s growth was driven by its international operations, which accounted for 94 percent of all KFC restaurants built in 1994 and for 100 percent of the increase in 1995. Domestically the restaurant count dropped by seven restaurants because of unit closures, intense competition among the largest fast food competitors resulted in a number of obstacles to further expansion in the U.S market. Expansion of free standing restaurants was particularly difficult. Fewer sites were available for new construction and those sites, because of their increase cost, were driving profit margins down. However the most critical or major issue of this case in the future will be their ability to handle changes. Their system is older, in terms of facilities and product form, and their attitudes still don’t reflect the realities of their changing business environment. One on the great challenges at KFC is that there is a lot that needs fixing and the toughest challenge is that they have to stay focused. They also have a significant service problem in a service driven industry. And they have to figure out a way to meet their customer service expectations which they don’t meet today. In 1996, the major problem was how to transition the old KFC into a new KFC the appealed to consumer demands for more healthy food items ate lower price, greater variety in food......

Butler Lumber Company Case Proposal

...Butler Lumber Company Financial Proposal Analysis & Conclusions Based on the analysis on Butler Lumber’s financial statements (Exhibit 1), we conclude that, for sole trader companies like this, it has been growing fast for the past years, as shown in an increase of Sales from 19% in 1989 to 34% in 1990. There is also a slow and steady growth in net income. Butler Lumber uses most of its cash in inventory, occupying 179,000 out of 475,000. Also, stocks’ SAF is positive for 1988-1990 and 1990-1991, indicating that the company has too much inventory. Accounts receivable’s SAF of 1988-1990 and 1990-1991 show a considerable increase, therefore we conclude that the company is giving out a significant amount of credit to its customers. We consider BLC a healthy company with increasing current assets, but due to the fact that it is giving out too much credit to customers, plus too much inventory, Butler Lumber has bad liquidity and turnover. Cash’s SAF shows a negative number brought by decrease in liquidity that avoids its use against contingencies and debt repayment. BLC desires to keep a good relationship with its suppliers. However, right now they have given the company a considerable credit for delayed payment. In order to maintain a solid relationship with its partners, BLC is in great urgency to find other financing sources to pay the credit. This is one of the reasons for Mr. Butler’s desire to borrow money, both to expand his business and to pay the liabilities that...

Case Analyses- Request for Proposal

...Case Analyses- Request for Proposal The Request for proposals (RFPs) is used in negotiated acquisitions for the procurement of supplies and services (research and development (R&D), construction and commercial items), by the contracting officer issuing a solicitation to communicate the government needs to prospective contractors. The policies and procedures that govern RFPs vary between the procurement of commercial items and construction. The purpose of this paper is to compare the two RFPs and identify the differences. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) requires commercial items acquisitions exceeding $5.5 million to be solicited using the RFPs contract method and solicitations is prepared using the standard form (SF) 1449. The commercial items RFP used in this comparison was issued by the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA). The requirement is to provide inscription for blank marble niche covers for Arlington National Cemetery. The acquisition is being set-aside for service-disabled veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB). The period of performance is for a base period and four option years. The option clause to extend the term of the contract is included. The option clause does not obligate the government to exercise the option years. The government may exercise an option by providing the contractor with a written notice within the time specified in the contract. The solicitation states that prospective contractors must provide an all-inclusive unit price. The...

Boeing Software Procurement Case Study

...Boeing Software Procurement Case Study Questions: Why would a large and complex company like Boeing employ off-the-shelf application-specific software for accounting, human resources, supply chain management and other core business processes? And why do they choose to own, host and operate all of their own software rather than to for example outsource payroll to ADP Corporation or sales force management to Salesforce.com? On the other hand, why would Boeing develop in-house some of the software applications used in conjunction with its products?
