The Childhood of Heathcliff
(chapters 4 to 17)

The story begins thirty years before when the Earnshaw family lived at Wuthering Heights consisting of, as well as the mother and father, Hindley, a boy of fourteen, and six-year-old Catherine, the same person that he had dreamt about and the mother of the present mistress. In that year, Mr Earnshaw travels to Liverpool where he finds a homeless, gypsy-like boy of about seven whom he decides to adopt as his son. He names him "Heathcliff". Hindley, who finds himself excluded from his father's affections by this newcomer, quickly learns to hate him but Catherine grows very attached to him. Soon Heathcliff and Catherine are like twins, spending hours on the moors together and hating every moment apart.

Because of this discord, Hindley is eventually sent to college but he returns, three years later, when Mr Earnshaw dies. With a new wife, Frances, he becomes master of Wuthering Heights and forces Heathcliff to become a servant instead of a member of the family.

Heathcliff and Cathy continue to run wild and, in November, a few months after Hindley's return, they make their way to Thrushcross Grange to spy on the inhabitants. As they watch the childish behaviour of Edgar and Isabella Linton, the children of the Grange, they are spotted and try to escape. Catherine, having been caught by a dog, is brought inside and helped while Heathcliff is sent home.

Five weeks later, Catherine returns to Wuthering Heights but she has now changed, looking and acting as a lady. She laughs at Heathcliff's unkempt appearance and, the next day when the Lintons visit, he dresses up to impress her. It fails when Edgar makes fun of him and they argue. Heathcliff is locked in the attic where, in the evening, Catherine climbs over the roof to comfort him. He vows to get his revenge on HIndley.

How Does Emily Bronte Present the Character Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights?

...Through out Wuthering Heights Heathcliff is presented in many different ways to the reader which create a completly different view of his personality and motives. This is no different in the opening four chapters of the novel. During this time we are able to look at Heathcliff’s character through the perspective of three other characters, Lockwood, Nelly and Cathy. Each of these perspectives shine light on certain aspects of Heathcliff’s personality and to understand what a complex character he is. The reader is not provided with enough information on his background to know enough about his former life. We only become aware of whom he really is, later on in the novel when he narrates for himself. Heathcliff enters the Earnshaw home as a poor orphan and is immediately assualted by questions of his parentage. He is characterized as devilish and cruelly referred to as "it" in the Earnshaw household. This impression of a poor, defencless Heathcliff during his childhood creates a binary opposition to the cold, confident Heathcliff we are introduced to through Lockwood’s narration. “ ‘Mr Heathcliff’ I said, A nod was my answer” this shows that Heathcliff holds Lockwood in contempt and doesn’t deem him worthy enough to break his isolation and engage in converse. “He is a dark skinned gypsy in aspect, in dress and manners a gentleman” this description highlights Heathcliffs dark complextion which isolates him from the rest of the Earnshaw family, this is shown to be key......

This had to do with the situation their parents were in, as well as their perspective on childhood in general. ...Charlotte Brontë described Heathcliff as a ‘man’s shape animated by demon life – a ghoul” To what extent do you think this is an accurate assessment of the ways in which Heathcliff is presented in the novel? Heathcliff is presented in this novel in various different ways. He is a character that arguably shifts from having human qualities, to presenting traits of the Byronic hero and finally becoming a typical gothic villain. The doomed central character of Heathcliff in this gothic novel could be paralleled to that of Satan in John Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ where Satan is cast out by God from Heaven into the terrible darkness of Hell. One could argue that Brontë does in fact present Heathcliff as “a ghoul” by making a connection between him and the exotic and describing him from the very start as “dark almost as if [he] came from the devil” showing that his striking physical appearance, just like the Byronic hero, makes him unable to integrate into a higher social class. In an attempt to confine and dehumanize Heathcliff, Hindley forces him into servitude; although Heathcliff endures it, he plots how he can “paint the house-front with Hindley’s blood”. ...Charming innocent and angelic, childhood, it is a period of colourful dreams, carefree life. It is short lived and feeling but its indelible. One always recalls it with adoration and wishes for the revival of the period. As Keats said, "Always let the fancy roam, Pleasure is never at home." For as long as I can remember I lived with different family members, and when I was older I even lived with friends from school. In Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, the theme of love is central; particularly the love between both Catherine and Heathcliff. Bronte’s illustration of the love between the two protagonists transgresses beyond the “normal”, romantic love previous authors, such as Jane Austen, would portray. Emily Bronte’s love uniting both Catherine and Heathcliff contains undeniable gothic conventions alongside the idea of idolised romance; she has created a love story which includes aspects of passion, lust and suffering. About 250 years ago, childhood has been recognised as a distinct era of human life (Rousseau, 1762). In the 18th century, a French philosopher believed that children are in need of stimulation and education (Rousseau, 1762). However, in the past, according to Christian religion children were born evil and prone to sin. ...Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights it is a Gothic novel designed to both horrify and fascinate readers with scenes of passion and cruelty, supernatural elements, and a dark, foreboding atmosphere. The story is narrated by Lockwood, a newcomer to the locale of Wuthering Heights that records in a diary what Nelly, a servant, told to him. All the action of Wuthering Heights takes place in the moors, a place of solitude, far away from any village or city. There are two main households: Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, both are isolated from society, forcing each household to create a society of their own Wuthering Heights centers on the story of Heathcliff -one of the most fascinated personage in literature, merely described by three narrators: Lockwood, Nelly and Catherine. ...Every moment of life is important, however, we can say the childhood is the most important part of a life time since that is the time we may learn every foundations we need to live a life. Also, if we look at our current behaviors, life style and personality, we will find that a lot of those came from our childhood.
