The Story of Edgar Sawtelle: Connections Analysis The main character in David Wroblewski’s novel, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, is marked for greatness in a way that many would not realize. Often, physical marks or imperfections are an author’s way of letting their readers know that a character is important. For Edgar Sawtelle, this imperfection is the fact that he is unable to speak. Although on the outside there doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with Edgar, the readers understand that there is something distinctly different about him. Due to his “disability”, Edgar sees more, understands more, and perceives more than almost all of the other characters. Claude himself describes Edgar’s watchful gaze when Edgar discovers the relationship between Claude and his mother. Claude describes Edgar as “a boy that spends his days watching”, (Wroblewski 249) and this watching is exactly what allows Edgar to see things that others can’t. He knows that Claude is hiding something after Gar’s death, even though Trudy doesn’t realize it. Edgar knows early on that something is wrong with the way Claude acts. Unfortunately, this inability to speak was also the reason for many conflicts, like when Edgar was unable to speak into the phone while Gar was dying on the floor of the barn. This lack of spoken communication also gives Edgar control over who can understand what he is “saying”. Such as when Glen Papineau was interrogating him about his father’s death. Edgar was able to keep his communications from being understood by an interpreter because he and his mother had their own special form of sign language. This fact provides Trudy an excuse to stay with Edgar during the interrogation, describing to Glen how “A conventional signer wouldn’t make much sense of it.” (130). Bernard Shaw. The story represents fiction and is written in a righteous tone with the elements of comic tone. The text relates the misadventures of an alcoholic investigator while he probes the mystery of a graveyard—full of saintly corpses—that migrates across a stream to escape association with the body of a newly buried sinner. The author’s attention is focused on the problem of disparity between people belonging to various classes. “The Miraculous Revenge” was written in 1885. Through his writings G. Bernard Shaw addresses prevailing social problems, but he also has a vein of comedy in his works which makes their stark themes more palatable. Issues which engaged Shaw's attention included education, marriage, religion, government, health care, and class privilege. He was most angered by what he perceived as the exploitation of the working class. ...Tony’s story Literary analysis of the short story “Tony’s story” by Leslie Silko. Tony’s story is about two indian boys. One of them, named Leon, has just arrived back to the pueblo from the army. The other one is called Tony. The story takes place in the middle of the summer. On San Lorenzo’s day, a holiday, Leon suddenly gets hit by a cop, without any reason. Afterwards, Leon is of course upset about the incident -“I’ll kill the big basterd if he comes around here again”, Leon kept saying.” (p. 2, l. 12). The short story expresses what happened to Louise Mallard after hearing of her husband Brently’s death in a railroad disaster. Since Mrs. Mallard suffers has heart problems, her sister Josephine told her the horrific news in a gentle way. After crying for a while, she went to her room alone and locked herself there.
