Language and Literacy

As the geographic territory under Roman control grew, the use of Latin as a common language also spread. In areas under Roman control, Latin was the spoken and written language of the courts and commerce, as well as the language of the Christian church. As the Roman Empire expanded, Latin served as a common language that allowed for people of diverse linguistic backgrounds to be able to communicate. Latin, like other languages past and present, had more than one form and changed over time because it was both written and spoken, and the educational level or social status of the writer or speaker often determined the final form of the language. Latin was also influenced by local languages spoken or written within the larger territory under the influence of what later came to be known as the Roman Empire. During the Carolingian Renaissance, throughout the reign of Charlemagne and his successors, the development of Latin literacy was greatly promoted. Although reading and writing were skills that some people had, literacy was not widespread before that time. Literacy in Latin was generally limited to people of the upper classes and members of the clergy. Charlemagne invited Alcuin of York to become his personal tutor and the head of his court school. Charlemagne charged Alcuin with the development of a literacy curriculum for children that would provide for their instruction in reading and writing, as well as for further study in the liberal arts and theology, thereby also furthering the Christian teachings that Charlemagne’s court promoted. The promotion of literacy impacted education and language throughout the region. The demand for material relating to the interests of the ruling military class increased. What Would You Do

...watched video clips from ABC’s show “What would you do?” one of situations in the video was a woman with OCD with a condition of germ phobia. She had dropped her groceries on the floor and could not purchase them for she felt they were “dirty”. The cashier was playing a roll of a not so very understanding person. He kept implying that they were not dirty and that the food was fine, one customer in line tried to explain to that OCD is Obsession Compulsive Disorder and that once something isn’t right they mentally cannot handle it. In the second situation there was a man in a liquor store with his son purchasing alcohol for a party that his son was going to have. You could tell that the son was very uncomfortable with the whole thing and that the father was pressuring him. A bunch of people disagreed with the actions the father was taking. In the final scenario a woman was breast feeding her child that was at the age of four in a coffee shop. One of the actors was playing the role as a disgusted costumer in the coffee shop and was making a big scene asking the woman to do that elsewhere. A lot of customer didn’t seem to have an issue with the woman breast feeding her child in the open public. Critique: All the scenarios had good points to them, if I was the person in line at the grocery store I would have done the same thing that the woman had done while she was in line. JOURNAL CONTENT: Section 1 – Critical Incident The nurse that I was observing had taken her lunch and I decided to take this time to go ahead and log in to the computer and look into some of the records of the patients. I hear someone saying help, help. I look around and see no one except TCU students that are sitting at computers picking out their patients for the next day. So I quickly get up and head in to the room. This is not one of my patients, but it is a patient that I had helped with earlier. I head in and introduce myself again while asking the women what I can do to help her. She appears to be about 70 years of age and she is crying. I don’t see anything that appears to be physically hurting her so I ask her what is wrong and she says she is in pain, saying the worst pain she has ever been in. I am pursuing a degree at ITT Technical Institute in hopes of falling in the category of “actually good”. I feel that what I need to be successful is hands on learning. At ITT I plan to achieve a career, not just to float through life one “job” after another. The IT department has the job of monitoring and blocking excess from internet sites without security clearance or certificates out of date. Unknown to the IT department is that the staff can be trying to access these sites which are not allowed. This would put the healthcare organization at risk of scripts slipping in (M, 2010). these scripts are security breaches which are used to steal patient’s personal information. Anti-virus software programs are not looking for these scripts they are looking for files. These scripts can come from social media networks which staff may be accessing.
