Today is the day! It is just a little past eight AM. The sun shining bright through my bedroom window wakes me. My family is coming to visit me for the first time since I moved to Jacksonville. This is my first time actually being away and I have missed them more than they know! My mother, younger brother, and sister are on the road to me. We will be making a surprise visit to The Jacksonville Zoo. Now, my younger brother, 10 years old, is one of the biggest animal lovers I know! He is going to have a blast! I cannot wait. So as my family arrives to my apartment, butterflies floating around in my stomach. I cannot stop smiling. They are very excited to see me. I hug them dearly, and welcome them into what I now call “my world,” (my home). Everyone explaining to me the sights they seen on the road, I can tell they were a little surprised, being that we all come from a small city down south where there are not very many attractions! What a beautiful day it is outside. The air is so fresh and the sun is shining bright, with not a cloud in sight. I knew this day was going to be great! As we approach the Jacksonville Zoo signs I look over at my younger brother and I can see his eyes begin to widen. At this point, he is beyond excited, taking his seat belt off, anxious to get out of the car. The sight of The Zoo is extravagating. The shading of the trees creating such a beautiful scenery, the smell of the different types of animals filling the air. With this being my first visit to a Zoo this big, I must admit, at this point I am pretty excited myself. I felt like a kid again. The excitement of Giraffes, Monkeys, Sea Turtles, Elephants, and Snakes took over my mind. My younger brother cannot get enough of wanting to feed the animals. We approach the long neck Giraffes. We are waiting in line to feed them and as you look out there is about five of them in a spacious…...

Daycare Today

...Paper 3 11/6/12 Childcare Today In this day and age childcare has become a key component to allow both parents to continue to provide and remain in the work force but this luxury comes at a high cost. According to USA Today, nearly 80% of children by the age of four will spend time in a daycare center (Szabo). Quality childcare offers many benefits for children of all ages in the present and in their future like social and cognitive development skills, early learning and a structured schedule. There are also concerns when it comes to childcare like safety and cost. Childcare centers offer many beneficial perks for the child and also for the parent. According to Babycenter.com quality centers employ staff members who have been trained in early childhood education, so they are prepared with the right skills to know what to expect from your child developmentally. They also mention that good daycare centers will offer a variety of activities for the children to engage in such as singing, dancing and storytelling. A child interacting with other children provides a great way for them to develop social skills (Daycare Center). According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development’s Study of Early Child Care found that children at the age of four spending more than 30 hours a week in a daycare center became demanding and aggressive. Throughout this study as they tracked the children they found that by the time these same children reached third......

Today Is a Good Day

...Three ways out of this difficulty might possibly be suggested by any humble imitator of Mr. Gladstone. First, the early English pirates may have learnt the word _castrum_ (they always used it as a singular) years before they ever came to Britain as settlers at all. For during the long decay of the empire, the corsairs of the flat banks and islets of Sleswick and Friesland made many a light-hearted plundering expedition upon the unlucky coasts of the maritime Roman provinces; and it was to repel their dreaded attacks that the Count of the Saxon Shore was appointed to the charge of the long exposed tract from the fenland of the Wash to the estuary of the Rother in Sussex. On one occasion they even sacked London itself, already the chief trading town of the whole island. During some such excursions, the pirates would be certain to pick up a few Latin words, especially such as related to new objects, unseen in the rude society of their own native heather-clad wastes; and amongst these we may be sure that the great Roman fortresses would rank first and highest in their barbaric eyes. Indeed, modern comparative philologists have shown beyond doubt that a few southern forms of speech had already penetrated to the primitive English marshland by the shores of the Baltic and the mouth of the Elbe before the great exodus of the fifth century; and we know that Roman or Byzantine coins, and other objects belonging to the Mediterranean civilisation, are found abundantly in barrows of the......

Day to Day Effects

...Extra Credit 1 Every day, every minute, in fact every second, we are interacting and building connections with everything we see and do. For this assignment, I want to focus on my encounter with Starbucks staff. I probably am one of the biggest Starbucks fanatic anyone will every encounter. I love the thrill of going to Starbucks, and anticipating and thinking about what my new Starbucks concoction will be. Reflecting upon my Starbucks experiences, I have come to a conclusion of whether we know it or not, our unintended communications turn into a relationships that we fail to see. To test my thinking and prove it valid, I went to the Starbucks that I have been going to for years now. Here goes my thoughts, “What do I order? What am I feeling today? What is the new drink that came out?”. As I walked in, I examined the same feeling of thrill and excitement that rushes upon me. As I wait in the long, almost endless lines at Starbucks, I especially examine other people’s orders and get inspired for my order. As the line lessens, I am finally able to reach upon my decision of my order. Instantly, the woman taking my order my order found me quit familiar and said, “hello, how’s your day today? Would you like chai latte or caramel macchiato?” and I found it surprising on how she knew exactly what I want. Reflecting upon the situation, I realize how going to Starbucks often, I run into the same people, the same staff and essentially built a relationship that we don’t realize.......

Ethics Today

...Ethics Today Ethics plays an important role not only in people’s life but also in the workplace. What is the definition of ethics? “The rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group.” Over the last few decades, the study of ethics has changed in different ways. We now face many ethical dilemmas as society evolves and technology plays a big role in the way we do business. The ethics field of study has changed over the last 30 years. Companies have to deal with organizations monitoring the behavior that is executed while doing business. These organizations create rules and regulations that set the standards for companies to follow. Even though there were many ethical dilemmas in the past that made headlines, the ones we deal with today have a greater broadcast because of the technological advances available today. People blog and text all day long about their experiences with companies, and the negative bias gets read even if it didn’t make the presses. The biggest challenges to business ethics in the 21st century in my opinion can be explained in the following statements. Companies have to be concerned with ethical decisions that hurt the environment. They must ensure they are morally responsible and have set values by which employees should abide. Another main challenge is ensuring employees - as well as customers - are treated fairly and equally when providing products and services. Because we are so......

A Day of Nothing and a Day of Activity

...A Day of Nothing and a Day of Activity From what I can recall, I did nothing of particular interest on February 8, so I shall elect to skip talking about it. To make up for the lack, I shall write an excruciatingly long entry for today. As is typical of an exchange student at Kansai Gaidai, I awoke only to begin my journey over to my Japanese class. In class, we played 'Who's Pen Is This?' in order to practice our previously learned grammar lesson. Next, we planned a pretend trip in order to practice another grammar lesson. Finally, we learned a new grammar point before departing. My next activity was to wait 40 minutes so that I could meat Saki and Chiaki again for lunch. This time, I brought my laptop along so that I could share photographs from back home. While waiting, I was joined by Wayne, a Chinese student who I had previously met, and Keisuke. At first, Keisuke swore that Wayne was a Japanese person, but after some effort to convince him otherwise, he believed that he was not. Come 11:30, I took my leave from the boys to join the girls in the cafeteria. Since it was rainy and drab awful outside today, Saki and Chiaki were waiting inside the cafeteria instead of the outside area where they usually wait. After getting food, we ate and talked some. Once finishing, we made our way to the CIE lounge so I could plug in my laptop and begin the show. A wise move plugging it in, I might add, as the presentation lasted about four hours. I began by showing pictures of my......

Humanities Today

...how we truly evolved into the existence of today. The lessons that we learn throughout our lives are taught so that we can learn about the creation of humanity. Cultures throughout the world have been molded by historical events. Art offers our culture with a unique image that is custom-made towards our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and freedom of expression. Modern museums were the first place for revealing such works of art, but now there is a constant effort to try to compete with the vast production of computers and the internet. Without human inquiry and expression, there would not be what is known as a society today or a sense of humanity in the world. A society evolves over time. Someone had to start somewhere. Someone millions of years ago questioned how to improve life and create a society. Human expression is a way to show one person’s emotions. Throughout time and history, we have seen a variety of ways human beings can express how they are feeling or what they know. Even to this day we see human expression all around us. We see it through art; listen to it through music, different types of architecture, philosophy, and literature. Art has evolved over time. When it first started, there wasn’t really a technology; it was just hand painted or hand sculpted by an artist. Today, art can be produced with a press of a button. For example, one could make a collage of photographs within minutes, to whereas it would take someone days or months even years to finish a......

...Sagar Parsana Professor Warren Kelly ENC 1102 College Writing 2 3 August 2015 Paper 5 Final Draft Exploitation of Animals: Rats and human ethics In the field of science and technology, the last decade has proven to be the most successful time period. Advancements in the field of science, such as Genetic engineering, has made human life easier. But, the critics in this field has raised many questions regarding ethical, environmental, economical, and social dilemmas. Recently, there has been a sharp increase in the number of animals used for technological research, and many animal extremists around the world are blaming scientists for breaking ethical codes. Rats and mice are being used for formulating new cancer drugs by scientists only for the benefit of human beings. Rats, along with mice and rodents, make up more than ninety percent of the animals used in research. There are number of questions raised by animal extremists, such as for what purpose these animals are being exploited? Should we consider the question of ethics and morality while these animals are mistreated for Humans selfish purpose? How should the attitude and practice toward the animal change? An online journal, The Conversation included in its article “Animals in Research: Rats,” such animals were used because humans and rats both are mammal, they have similar structure and functions regarding their body. That is one of the specific reason for why rats are used in medicinal research. Even though this......

That Day

...Life Changing Experiences By: Olivia Son Growing up in the country you could always find me outside playing with my friends or relatives. We would literally go outside the moment we woke up and would not come back inside until bedtime. Between riding four-wheelers, jumping on trampolines, and having mud fights you never knew what we might me getting into that day. I had my share of bumps and bruises along the way but I would not have changed a single minute of it. We all grow up thinking that we are invincible until something happens in your life that changes all that. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. It was a hot summer day just like any other and I was your typical fourteen-year-old girl who wanted to spend all her free time hanging out with her boyfriend. This day was no different. I woke up that morning and of course could not wait to spend time with him. Therefore, I rushed through breakfast and did everything that my mom had asked me to do before he was allowed to come over. Finally, he was at my house and we were deciding what we might get into. It was so hot outside so we decided that we would go swimming and ride my four-wheeler. We figured we would going four-wheeler riding first that way if we got dirty we could just jump into the pool when we got back and wash off. So we changed into our swim suits and headed out. Looking back wearing only a swim suit and flip flops to go riding might not of been the best idea but it was something......

Hospitals Today

...Hospitals Today vs. Hospitals 100 years ago Christy A. Hacker Beckfield College Have you ever broken a bone? Given birth to a child? Been rushed to a hospital in the back of an ambulance? Gotten a call in the middle of the night that a loved one has been hurt? Chances are in your lifetime at some point you will come in contact with a hospital. As you sit waiting and watching have you ever wondered just how hospitals came to be and how modern technology has evolved into that exact moment? Are the procedures the exact same as 100 years ago? Has technology really changed the way things are done…. and has it changed for the better or worse? Hospitals in the United States of America emerged from almshouses that provided care and custody for the ailing poor. Rooted in this tradition of charity, one of the 1st noted hospital opened in 1736. Bellevue Hospital in New York City was home to a 6 bed ward. The hospital as we know it today started to emerge about 60 years ago, beginning around the time of the civil war. The war itself kicked off the need for professional nursing, specialized departments and services. Doctors were in high demand. But was technology keeping up with the growing need for medical attention? Let’s look at how a setting a broken bone has changed over the years. The early writings of Hippocrates suggest that wooden splints were used to immobilize the bone. The ancient Greeks were known to use waxes and paste to create stiff bandages. Humanities Today

...| Humanities Today | | | | 6/25/2012 | HUM102 | | Humanities could be described as the blend of history, culture, mythology, literature and art in some cases. It establishes the past, the present, and the future, life, and destiny of society. With humanities, we are able to discover how life and all humanity became of existence and evolve over time. Humanities can assist people in different cultures and ethnic backgrounds to recognize, understand, and establish the meaningful modifications of American history. It seems as if society has become entirely dependent on visible consumption and leisure and is being denied of how we truly evolved into the existence of today. The lessons that we learn throughout our lives are taught so that we can learn about the creation of humanity. The cultures throughout the world have been molded by historical events. Items such as technology set distinct areas that could be integrated to additional assessment of our history. Art offers our culture with a distinctive image that is custom-made towards our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and freedom of expression. The internet can show all the features of this. Modern museums were the first place for revealing such works of art, but now there is a constant effort to try to compete with the vast production of computers and the internet.
