One of the first comparable television shows is the Dr. Oz Show. Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiac surgeon, hosts the show and discusses health and wellness concerns from his viewers. The show airs on FOX at 11:00am and has been airing since 2009, has released almost 600 episodes and airs in over 118 countries (PR Newswire). This show averages around 3.4 million viewers for every episode, which is just behind the third most watched Dr. Phil, which averages around 3.8 million viewers. In 2011, the beginning of season 3, the show had its best ratings, with 3.8 percent of all households tuning in to watch (VanDerWerff). And come season 5’s premiere in 2013, there was a 14% increase over its fourth season premiere and a 45% jump over its demo lead in (PR Newswire).
The second comparable television show is the NBC show The Doctors. The show is on at 3:00pm and broadcasts in six other countries. The Doctors has been on the air since 2008 and has recently been renewed through 2016. Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Travis Stork hosts the show, along with four other medical doctors. The team of doctors discuss countless health related matters, take questions from the audience and viewers, and occasionally bring on celebrity guests. During the first season, in the month of November 2008, the show grew 18% and has only continued to grow since, averaging around 2.5 million viewers (Albiniak).
The third comparable is the show The Chew which airs on ABC at 1:00pm. This show has been airing since 2011 and has released over 500 episodes and counting. The shows’ hosts contain two Iron Chef stars, Michael Symon and Mario Batali, Top Chef Carla Hall, as well as television personality Clinton Kelly and health and wellness enthusiast Daphne Oz.
