Cell Phones- Use a combination of Voice and Data network to communicate with the service provider. Depending on your service provider you will be using CDMA or GSM Technology which operates on the 850Mhz and 1900Mhz. CDMA is used by Sprint, Verizon Cellular, and U.S. Cellular. GSM is used by AT&T, T-Mobile, and operates with a SIM card in conjuncture with the phone’s IMEI.

Landline phones- A Landline phones uses voice networks. Transmits signals converted from audio data through physical media. It does this via copper wire or fiber optic cables. There are 2 basic types of landlines, a corded landline and cordless landline. Also todays landlines can transfer data through Modems to connect to the Internet.

SMS / Text Messaging- Works on a voice network. SMS is a very small data transmission that does not use a lot of bandwidth. Also this works on the big three GSM, CDMA and TDMA network technologies to make it a universal service. SMS allows for text messages of 160 characters. In other languages the size is limited to 70 characters such as Chinese or Arabic.

Fax Machines- Fax machines uses a voice and data network that is transmitted through bits of voice tone data. Fax machines make a distinctive sound when transmitting information. With a photo sensor, a fax machine looks for white areas sending one tone. If it there were black areas it would send a different tone.

Pagers- Are used on a voice network. Pagers use audio tone or vibrate to let the user know if they have a message. There are many types of pagers: two tone pagers, five-six tone, POCSAG and FLEX.

VOIP (voice over IP) phones- VOIP is used via voice to data network. VOIP transports calls over IP network. A method for taking analog audio signals to digital data transported over the Internet. ATA (analog telephone adapter) is the simplest and most common way to talk.

Both have the same basic concept – to transmit information from point A to point B but both have their strengths and weaknesses and therefore, a person installing cabling may be reluctant to choose one over the other. Copper cabling is the less expensive of the two to install.
