Messing Grand Canyon University: Family Centered Health Promotion 06/02/2013 The VARK learning styles theory was developed in 1987 by a teacher from New Zealand. Neil Fleming took the pervious learning model and divided the visual learning style into two distinct areas, the first being visual and the second reading. This eventually developed into VARK; visual, aural, reading, and kinesthetic learning. There is also a fifth mode, the multimodal preference. Using the VARK questionnaire one can identify which style best suites their learning preferences, and develop strategies to become better learners. The questionnaire helps one to evaluate their own learning preferences and to most effectively manage their own study habits. It asks a series of multiple-choice questions of the student and then generates the learning preference geared towards the way in which the questions were answered. When the student determines there own learning style, after taking the questionnaire, they are also given tools to show them how to most effectively study for his or her communication and learning style. The VARK questionnaire is a great tool to help a student develop life-long strategies for studying and learning. This is an article that explains the many types of learning styles and some techniques that can help improve a students learning. This article also contains difference researches that have been done in learning styles of students. Individual participants finding The participant took the questionnaire designed by researchers called VARK (Fleming 2011). VARK stands for visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic. Upon completing the questionnaire the participant found out that they learn better by reading and writing. It explains that they take information in by writing lists, reading handouts, definitions and textbooks. They improve their learning by writing the words over several times and reading their notes multiple times, and that changing graphs into words help. The participant found that they can succeed by practicing multiple choice questions and writing answers out along with writing paragraphs (Fleming, 2011). Many different learning style models have been created throughout the years but this paper will focus on the VARK, (visual, aural, read-write, kinesthetic) system. This article will review the learning style for student X, summarize their learning style, preferred learning strategies, awareness of individual learning styles, and lastly preferences and strategies that influence teaching and learning. Summary of Learning Styles The VARK website has a 16 item quiz, which produces an analysis of which learning styles may be best suited for that particular person. Upon completion of the VARK learning assessment tool, student X generated the following scores: visual 6, aural 12, read-write 6, and kinesthetic 10. The highest of score of the four being 12 for aural. This means by the VARK definition that hearing information appeals most to the student. The second highest scoring item was kinesthetic at 10 meaning doing or performing skills appealed secondly. Student X scored 6 on both read-write and visual valuing these two elements equally. It was designed to assist learners about their learning preferences and describe how learners can gather, and interpret in order to organize and retain all information for future use (Chick, 2014). Learners are identified by what their preferences upon taking the VARK questionnaire; it includes visual leaning (diagram, picture), auditory learning (discussion, lectures), reading and writing (taking notes, making list, reading instruction), and kinesthetic learning (hands-om, experiment, activities). One subject who took the “VARK Questionnaire, How Do I Learn Best?” learned the results were Aural and Kinesthetic “AK”, a multimodal learning style preference. The subject’s preferred learning strategies were compared and found to be compatible with the VARK learning style strategies. Using VARK as a tool can give an instructor awareness of the individual’s learning style.
