There are multiple editions; Windows Server 2008 Web which is designed specifically for computers functioning as Internet or intranet Web servers, including all of the Internet Information Services 7 capabilities, but cannot function as an Active Directory domain controller, Windows Server 2008 Standard (Standard edition is also limited to computers with up to 4 GB of RAM (in the x86 version) and up to four processors, Windows Server 2008 Enterprise(The Enterprise edition includes the full set of Windows Server 2008 features, and supports computers with up to eight processors and up to 64 GB of RAM (in the x86 edition). Enterprise also supports up to four virtual images with Hyper-V (in the 64-bit version) and an unlimited number of network connections), Windows Server 2008 Datacenter (Designed for large and powerful servers with up to 64 processors and fault tolerance features such as hot add processor support. This edition is available only from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), bundled with a server), and Server Core which is a completely stripped version of windows server, only having a command prompt and limited abilities. There are major advantages and disadvantages of both Windows Server and Linux based systems depending upon the needs of your system. The majority of Linux variants are available for free or at a much lower price than Microsoft Windows. The majority of Linux variants and versions are notoriously reliable and can often run for months and years without needing to be rebooted. Although the majority Linux variants have improved dramatically in ease of use, Windows is still much easier to use for new computer users. Microsoft has made several advancements and changes that have made it a much easier to use Operating…...

Overview of Windows Server 2008 Features

...Unit 1 Research Project – Overview of Windows Server 2008 Features CIS 245 – Windows Client and Server Unit 1 Research Project Abstract – The objective of the Unit 1 research project was to provide an overview on two of the five topics that were listed in the assignment page. The overview is designed to give a general understanding of the topic, the function it provides, when it would be used, what benefit it provides, and any other pertinent information. For this assignment I chose Network Access Protection (NAP) and Client Access Licenses (CALs). Network Access Protection - Network Access Protection, or NAP, is a tool that allows network administrators to manage the access to network resources, as well as monitor real-time events on the network (Palmer, 2011). It has features that ensure all clients have the proper security protocols in order to remain connected to the network. If something is missing, it will automatically update the computer so that it matches the requirements for network access. It also performs continuous monitoring even after access has been granted to make sure they remain in compliance. As a security protocol, if a computer is found to lack the proper settings, NAP will quarantine it to limit what parts of the network it can use, or if it is found that it does not meet any of the requirements, it will quarantine it completely until it becomes compliant. Nap is also used when clients are connected to the network for the first time. It......

Important Features of Windows Server 2008

...Important Features of Windows Server 2008 Before making any analysis of Windows Server 2008, it should be noted that this operating system was created to remedy most of the shortcomings of Windows Vista, above all as concerns security. But it was built on the same base code as Vista. Some of the most notable differences or improvements of Windows Server 2008 come from the fact that it “includes a variation of installation called Server Core. Server Core is a significantly scaled-back installation where no Windows Explorer shell is installed. All configuration and maintenance is done entirely through command line interface windows, or by connecting to the machine remotely using Microsoft Management Console.” The main reason Server Core was used was to address security concerns Windows Vista and other previous operating systems were plagued by. To achieve this, the server was skimmed of some of the unnecessary features such as “.NET Framework, Internet Explorer, Windows PowerShell or many other features not related to core server features. A Server Core machine can be configured for several basic roles.” Another noteworthy feature of Windows Server 2008 is Failover Clustering that provides that “most server features and roles can be kept running with little to no downtime. In Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, the way clusters are qualified changed significantly with the introduction of the cluster validation wizard… The cluster validation wizard is a feature...

Microsoft Windows Server 2008

...so we might need to consider running Windows Microsoft Server 2008 Datacenter Edition on XMP x64, which has the fastest processors. We will need to determine the amount of RAM that may be needed. The hardware requirements for Windows Microsoft 2008 Datacenter might exceed the capabilities of our current servers, so we will need to check to see if it is compatible with the servers we already have in use. We may need to upgrade Windows 2003 Basic input/output systems. (BIOS) We will have to check the computers manufacturing website to determine if BIOS will be need to be upgraded, so we will be able to upgrade to the 2008. Since we are upgrading Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, unless you decide to do a clean install we will need to check the available disk space and the partitioning before we begin. We will also need check to ensure that any File Allocation Table (FAT) volumes are converted to NTFS (New Technology File System). We will need to determine if you are upgrading to compatible editions, there are Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter Editions that have specific upgrade paths. We will need to plan on how many workstations will be accessing the server on the server edition. For the Standard and ......

Server Roles in Windows Server 2008 R2

...A server role in Windows Server 2008 R2 is defined as a service, feature, or program which allows a specific job function within a computer network. Many of these services are optional and do not come installed with Windows Server 2008 by default. Once roles are properly installed and configured they can become automated at a System Administrator’s disposal. The server roles available in Windows Server 2008 R2 are listed as follows: Active Directory Certificate Services This service is used for assigning and managing digital certificates used in software such as Adobe PDF’s. The AD-CS service is an excellent way to offer an extra layer of security among documents and files. Security layers consist of file encryption, digital signatures, and key authentication. AD-CS can also aid with Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Service (HTTPS) and authentication for employees using VPN services. Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Domain Services allows computer, user, and device information to be stored. This allows for an easier, visual based management in a tree structured format; the domain is the host controller. AD-DS makes IT administration easier by allocating resources in one central, secure location. Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) ADFS is a service which authenticates users in-between two parties over an extranet. Windows Server 2008 Zone Research

...Microsoft Research Assignment 2 Monday, Feb 2nd, 2015 1. The purpose of the Global Names Zone in Windows server 2008 is used to hold single label names. The Global Names zone is intended to provide single-label name resolution for a limited set of host names, typically corporate servers and web sites that are centrally managed. The Global Names zone is most commonly used to hold CNAME resource records to map a single-label name to a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). Global Names Zone functionality is not intended to fully replace Wins. GNZ provides single-label name resolution whereas WINS provides NetBIOS resolution. 2. Because the DNS server that runs on an RODC cannot directly register client updates, it has to refer the client to a DNS server that hosts a primary or Active Directory-integrated copy of the zone file. This server is sometimes referred to as a "writable DNS server." When a client presents a Find Authoritative Query, which is the precursor to an update request, the DNS server on the RODC uses the domain controller Locator to find domain controllers in the closest site.  The RODC then compares the list of domain controllers that is returned with the list of name server (NS) resource records that it has. The RODC returns to the client the NS resource record of a writable DNS server that the client can use to perform the update. The client can then perform its update.  If no domain controller in the closest site matches an entry in the......
