Interpretation of “You Were You”
In Sandra Beasley’s “You Were You” the audience is shown how a previous relationship can strongly affect the life of an individual. My interpretation of “You Were You” takes the reader though an abstract dream of a woman. This dream takes place at a bar, the woman symbolizing a jukebox. This jukebox the woman is symbolizing witnesses her old lover making friends with another woman, the jukebox becomes jealous. The dream ends when she wakes up to people coming to help. The whole poem is very vague and lacks in details, meaning this poem can be interpreted in many different ways. By examining “You Were You” closely, one could understand that the man and woman were once together; the break up leading to a downhill disaster of a woman who once held meaning, but now resorts to drugs to escape the reality of her old lover moving on.
In this dream the woman imagines herself as a jukebox. This metaphor gives the reader a broader view of the situation at hand. The speaker is immobile and unable to interfere with her previous lover. His new woman forcing her to suffer through watching the man move on. By putting herself in the place of a jukebox, she tries to bring back the past by playing songs that her and her past lover once enjoyed. While she observes the man, she announces that she “played Sam Cooke for [him] but [he] didn’t look over once.” This statement implies that she is doing all that she can to be noticed and remembered by the man. This also proves that the woman knew the man well enough to know his tastes in music because she obviously thought playing this song would get him to look at her, but the man did not look over and this hurt her. The woman notices that he was “wearing [his] best smile and the shirt that makes [his] eyes green”. This is a clue that these…...

For You

...For You - M.T.Vasudevan Nair ‘For you’ speaks about a child’s feelings with regard to the happenings at home, the whole story with a child’s perspective. Vasu remembers his step sister, Leela who gifted him with a toy owl that he beheld with pride among his classmates and felt himself becoming important. The narrator (Vasu himself) tells about his parents who wanted to have a girl child after having three sons. They were disappointed on the birth of another son instead. This disappointment of the parents was vented out on Vasu in the form of negligence and resentment. This affects the child who is filled with fear about the mother and brothers since they always silenced him and beat him. He misses having a sister when his friends express experiences with their sisters fondly- wrapping their books, their beautiful handwriting, the brother-in-law to boast of, the wedding, etc. He always waits to see and longs to be with his father who is away in Ceylon, doing business. Once when he comes home, he brings a little girl with him who happens to be Leela, herself. There is a quarrel about her coming home as Vasu’s mother does not agree to the illicit relationship of her husband bringing forth this girl. Vasu is disturbed by this, as well as by the fact that the girl is closer to his father than himself. But at the same time, Vasu is pleased to have a sister. The toy-owl with Leela attracts him and he gently asks her for it, though he cannot directly communicate it to her as......

“You Can Resign and Go to Sbs, ” the Drivers Were Told

...“You can resign and go to SBS,” the drivers were told by Vincent Wijeysingha on Sunday, 2 December 2012 at 21:52 · The government has acted in our name as is its duty. It purged an industrial action and returned the nation to business as usual. The bus drivers from SMRT recklessly involved themselves in an illegal strike after refusing to bring their grievances to management or their trade union or seek the assistance of the Manpower Ministry. Twenty-nine have been deported, one hundred and fifty more issued a police warning and the five ringleaders will be tried. Industrial harmony has been restored, the tripartite relationship upheld, and public disorder averted.   As fortunate citizens of this prosperous and stable nation, we can heave a sigh of relief. Those refractory foreigners got what they deserved. How dare they come to our land - which our government built from a fishing village - and demand such indulgences as suitable accommodation and an equal wage. Nobody promised them any of that: if they aren’t happy here they can fuck off back home.   There are too many damn foreigners here as it is. The come here to steal our jobs, marry our women, clog the trains, explode housing prices, beat up taxi drivers, and drive Ferraris too fast. They dance outside Wisma Atria and jam the staircases at Lucky Plaza. Oh, and they smell. And talk too loudly. In strange accents.   In short, they are audacious and unpleasant. Oh, and they smell. Did I mention that? They do. And......

While You Were Sleeping

...While You Were Sleeping By Summer While You Were Sleeping, composed by Randy Edelman and directed by Jon Turteltaub, includes good examples of a leitmotif. A leitmotif is a reoccurring piece of music associated with a specific character, event, theme, or mood. The two leitmotifs used in this movie are “Lucy’s Theme”, which is a slow, romantic, or even sad piece of music. The “Family Theme”, has a faster beat that goes back and forth and is quirky. The main characters in While You Were Sleeping are Lucy, Peter, Jack, and the family. Lucy works at the train station, and sees Peter every day. On Christmas day, Lucy is asked to work. While working, Peter puts his token in to take the train and tells Lucy ‘Merry Christmas’. Soon, he is pushed in the train tracks. Lucy jumps on the tracks and saves his life. When Peter is taken to the hospital, Lucy goes to check on him and Peter’s family shows up to the hospital to find him in a coma. A nurse tells the family that Lucy is Peter’s fiancée, and shocks the family. Lucy goes along with it because she is worried about Peter’s grandma, who has a heart condition. After seeing the family at the hospital, they invite Lucy to their Christmas. When Lucy arrives at the house, she realizes that she enjoys being part of the Callaghan family and she loves them. The next morning, Lucy meets Peter’s brother Jack. After spending time with each other, Jack and Lucy fall in love. Soon, Peter wakes up and doesn’t recognize Lucy. The family,......

...he collapse of one of the world’s most striking and original game studios in late 1998 came as a shock to the industry. The precise circumstances of its collapse remain a mystery, but one fact remains. In an enigmatic 1992 press conference, Simon Bertucci used the phrase as he hinted at the development of a gaming technology well beyond the current state of the art. Following his death later that year, no notes or working prototype were found. Its lasting legacy includes four major game franchises: Realms of Gold, Clandestine, Solar Empires, and the Realms Beyond. REALMS OF GOLD SERIES FOLLOW the adventures of FOUR ETERNAL HEROES through INFINITE WORLDS, in the greatest INTERACTIVE experience ever forged. Realms of Gold I: Tomb of Destiny (1983) Realms of Gold II: War in the Realms (1984) Realms of Gold III: Restoration (1987) Realms of Gold IV: Foundation’s Edge (1990) Realms of Gold V: Aquator’s Realm (1993) Realms of Gold Worlds of Intrigue: High Society (1993) Realms of Gold VI: Far Latitudes (1994) Realms of Gold VII: Winter’s Crown (1998) Realms of Gold RPG, 1st Edition Rules (1999) Realms of Gold remains Black Art's seminal contribution to the medium. Begun in 1983 as a high school class project, the series extended from the earliest, crudest text adventures to state-of-the-art 3D and sprawled across multiple genres and at least four revolutions in graphics technology. It starred four heroes—a warrior, a wizard, a princess, and a half-elven......

Are You in ?

...CMST 301 Final Paper Are you in? Military recruiting is challenging not only because of the scale of the recruiting mission, but also because of the current environment in which recruiting takes place. Alternatives to military service are more attractive to young people. To meet its human capital needs, the Department of Defense must convince about 200,000 people each year – the majority of them recent high school graduations – to join the military (United States General Accounting Office). To assist in this recruiting effort, the military services advertise on television, on radio, in print, and on the Internet; sponsor sports teams; and participate in other promotional activities. During World War II, the primary means of advertisement were posters, magazine and newspaper articles, and television and radio spots. Propaganda in the 40’s were predominantly the main source of advertising that the American’s used to increase support for the war and commitment to Allied victory. Their message was unambiguous; Consumers must economize on goods and services, recycle waste and scrap, plant Victory Gardens and can the vegetables, comply with the price controls and rationing laws, and put discretionary income into war bonds. Television, radio and movie theatres were the main sources utilized to get the message out to people in a rapid manner. However, television wasn’t widely available in the 1940’s because it was still a relatively new invention. Those that had money......

Info on What Were You Dreaming

...
What Were You Dreaming? shows many more examples of cultural suppression. For example, the white woman is constantly explaining the nature of the law and the people in South Africa. She describes the laws as justifying “people as movable goods,” (Gordimer 1413). She continues, saying “we’re talking about loading up trucks and carting black people out of sight of whites,” (Gordimer 1414). This phenomenon, she says, is “an everyday affair,” and has clearly ingrained into the minds of those “moveable goods” their apparent inferiority to whites (Gordimer 1413-1414). The story begins in the first person point of view. The narrator is hitchhiking. He thinks about how bandits have made it difficult for hitchhikers to get rides. Motorists are afraid to pick up strangers. A car with two white people, a driver and a passenger, stop to pick up the narrator. The driver is male and seems to be English. The female passenger seems to be a local. The whites ask the narrator where he is from. He answers that he is from Cape Town, and the female passenger knows this means he was forced away from the area by the South African government. The whites, particularly the driver, are inquisitive. The narrator patiently answers all questions in hope that his friendliness will get him a ride to his final destination instead of just the next town. The narrator also... Success in Life Depends on Where You Were Born

...‘Success In life depends on where you are born’ It can be seen by many that where you are born and the numbers in your postcode can dictate your successes in life. For example being born in a wealth part of England, an MEDC, such as Kensington with parents high up the economic chain will have a better life prospects and more opportunity’s to life a life with high welfare then those born in the poorest areas of Nepal. Technology and education within parts of the worlds are huge factors in your success in life as many people in poor areas still fail to complete school up to secondary school level and without recourses that make learning and education easier such as textbooks, white boards, computers and teachers with the correct qualifications it makes getting children’s education in LEDC’s up to the standard of schooling in countries such as Germany and Switzerland, therefore they cannot compete for successes with children who have been in school with qualified teachers for 13 or more years. Other factors such as the care provided by the Government can also been seen to affect people’s successes in their lifetime. As for example in Great Britain a National Health Service is provided for all citizens who pay taxes and so when illness strikes there are no fees. This allows even the poorest people to get the healthcare provisions they need to carry on surviving and working towards what they see as success. However in developing countries without healthcare provided those......

Would You Be Happier If You Were Richer

...my lecture is about to would you be happier if you were richer. Most people believe that they would be happier if they were richer, but survey evidence on subjective well-being is largely inconsistent with that belief. Subjective well-being is most commonly measured by asking people, All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days? or Taken all together, would you say that you are very happy, pretty happy, or not too happy? An alternative method asks people to report their feelings in real time, which yields a measure of experienced affect or happiness.Increases in income have been found to have mainly a transitory effect on individuals_ reported life satisfaction. Moreover, the correlation between income and subjective wellbeing is weaker when a measure of experienced happiness is used instead of a global measure. More importantly, the focusing illusion may be a source of error in significant decisions that people make. Evidence for the focusing illusion comes from diverse lines of research. For example, Strack and colleagues reported an experiment in which students were asked:How happy are you with your life in general? And How many dates did you have last month? The correlation between the answers to these questions was. When they were asked in the preceding order, but the correlation rose to 0.66(zero point sixty six) when the order was reversed with another sample of students. Similar focusing effects were observed when attention was......
